My time and I was lucky enough back in 1968 to meet dear 'Bazza' at Snetterton Race circuit . He was just starting out and working with his dad he was riding his 'Bultaco' Racer. I went to school at Eccles Hall Boarding school nearby which was the HQ and part of the original American Airbase in WW 2. ( That's how Snetterton came to be ) .I was 15 and that experience gave me the interest and love of motorcycling which has stayed with me all my life . I'm now 70 and have owned 90 odd bikes many being 2 strokes..Thanks Barry for everything . Still an icon .
As a young kid, we used to camp at Oulton Park, and his chief mechanic used to let us warm Barrys bikes up in the paddock. Barry was always friendly, and always had time for us once the days' activities were over.
I think Barry Sheene was a British Gentleman racer who did many things for motor cycle racing and motor cycles in general, I remember him doing the broadcasts here in Australia, I think he is the reason GP racing got so much acceptance in the domestic home television, again the Gentleman that he was helped that along,, RIP mate, cheers
Your admiration for Barry really shines through. You were happy as a pig in 💩on that bike and why not. Way back in 1993 Barry was at a powerbike meeting at Brands Hatch, he was in the club house signing autographs, the que to get to him was a mile long, and I was No 2 in the que. I got to shake his hand, and I remember saying to him, " I've waited 18 bloody years for this, pleased to meet you" I took 5 of Barry's books with me, and he signed every one. For me there will never be another Barry Sheene, he really was a one off. My friend just kept taking photos of me with Barry, and Barry even took the time to smile at the camera, as I was shaking his hand. I still have that photo today, hanging up in my garage, along with other pictures of Barry. What a guy he was. Barry had so much guts. Those bikes, the tyres were lethal but he was a winner dedpite having so much metal in him. He was truely a legend and still is and was from putney and Fulham like me. He was so much like George Best.
The bike is stunning as was its rider, be such and honour just to sit on it and say I sat on barry sheene's bike. Rip legend..i dont think theres a petrolhead who wouldnt want to just sit on it.
I remember Barry Sheen winning his races in the 1970s l was riding Suzuki motorcycles and to read about Suzuki winning races was great l never saw him race becsuse l live in Australia it was great you showed his 1976 championship winning Suzuki RG 500
I've never met Danny but know his Dad who pointed me in the direction of this video. Glad he did. Danny did a great job talking about Barry and the bike. Great video all round

Disappointed in today's top level MotoGP era. The paddock is full of snobs who think it's all about prestige and money. I've really enjoyed knocking some people down a few notches. I hope the days of guys like Barry Sheene and Gary Nixon are not over.

RG is my favorite motorcycle icon, the first motorcycle I bought myself was RG125, then I bought RG250 and RG400, unfortunately in my country it is very hard to get RG500, in fact, RG250 and RG400 are not legal for road use. I live in Taiwan and it is almost fascist when it comes to transportation, the government and bureaucrats and people in general hate motorcycles and motorcycle riders. I mean, real motorcycles and motorcycle riders, not those scooter commuters.
The most absurd thing is that our government scraps the nuclear power plant that never opened (including my tax dollars, of course) and then keeps using the Fossil fuel power station, but then claims to the public that 2 stroke motorcycles are the culprit of air pollution and encourages the public to scrap 2 stroke motorcycles in exchange for a pittance in electric motorcycle subsidies.

Many thanks for that. I was a massive fan back then of Barry. Here in Dublin his 79 RG was at a bike show in the Mansion House, if any other Irish are reading this. I sat on it several times! Pretty sure it was the real thing as had scruitenerting stickers from Argentina I think, well a south American round. When he was with yamaha he appeared at an event run by the Irish importer, Danfey. I asked him two questions lol

Yep, we all felt the same when both were in workshop
*I had a 1989 RG500 'C' Series one of the last made, and rode it hard including Track Days at Oulton, Cadwell and Mallory Park but was classed as up to 1000cc Class, managed to keep up on corners, but Honda Blackbirds beat me on acceleration - however finished 3rd so considered a win at Cadwell Park !*
Fantastic video! My old man used to tell me about going to see them battling it out on them, must have been an incredible spectacle to see those two strokes ripping round!
At work in the late 1970 we had connections with the late John G Williams, Suzuki GB team being Sheene Williams and John Newbold, we heard of "ungentlemanly conduct " towards Williams , after Williams came along Pat Hennen into Suzuki GB, Hennen and his manager turned the table on Sheene, who was lost for a remedy against the skills of Hennen and Kenny Roberts.

I thnk that bike you rode at the TT was a Mk 9 which is an 83/84 bike I think.
Try to line up some interviews with two- stroke greats like Kenny, Randy, Baldwin, Wayne, Eddy, Jenny Jr., Edwards ....

There are some great Facebook groups for RG’s with experienced owners / restorers who can give pointers on building. Whilst I’ve built around 5 RG’s from a bare frame, it’d be no good me doing a ‘how to’ vid, too much tea drinking and chatting going on in between spannering. But feel free to ask any questions, happy to help!
