  • Aviation UA-camr Dan Gryder was mentioned in the NTSB report on the fatal accident of a Cessna 208B in Heyburn, ID. Gryder trespassed on the site of the plant where the pilot had hit a tower, and took the light that was on top of the tower. He recorded himself doing both the criminal trespassing and the theft, telling his audience in his video that he brought the light back with him to Atlanta. In addition, Gryder has had a Protective Order placed against him in the case of a woman who complained of stalking in Louisiana. Gryder appealed all the way to the state supreme court, but his appeals have been denied.

    Interfering with an ongoing FAA/NTSB investigation like this is inexcusable. The light and its condition was vital to the investigation and will also be a major part of ongoing litigation.

    I'm not sure if Dan removed that light...but regardless, his visit to the crash scene was after the FAA and NTSB concluded their onsite investigation and after the tower/steam stack had been dismantled. If there's anyone to blame for the light not being scrutinized as part of this investigation...it's the NTSB.

    After reading the NTSB report, there is more here that is not being discussed… The stacks in question are directly in line of the runway approach, improperly marked, and interfere with the standard three (3) degree glide slope. They appeared on the scene six (6) years before the crash but long after the airport was constructed. To make matters worse, they were extended further (higher) because they also violated EPA requirements.
    There is no discussion in the NTSB report of how the stacks came to be or why the FAA didn’t do more to get them installed properly. But there is some additional stench here… This is a municipal airport that I suspect is more than a little bit reluctant to tell the significant tax payer potato plant to cease and desist and do something appropriate with their exhaust stacks. On top of that, this is the only runway that has a published RNAV approach and it has significant obstructions in the way. What is the FAA thinking? The bottom line is that this appears to be an accident that was waiting to happen.

      @tgmct What is the point of your post? This UA-cam video has nothing to do with the accident. It has everything to do with the lack of credibility of a UA-camr who presents himself as having some kind of credible opinion on that subject. There is no reason to believe his videos. He has proven it himself. He may say some true things; but, having proved himself lacking credibility, there is no reason to believe what he posts.

      @medea27 4 місяці тому +8

      So channels covering the legal issues of Trevor Jacobs or Trent Palmer are looking at "interesting aviation news" but channels covering Dan Gryder are having a "pissing match"? Aside from not using that term in the right context, you seem to conveniently ignore that Gryder was specifically mentioned in the NTSB report for actions that he'd filmed himself doing & posted on UA-cam. I suppose you think going through Jacob's NTSB reports and discussing his sentencing was a "pissing match" too? An aviation UA-camr took it upon himself to interfere with an _in-progress_ fatal crash investigation for content.... sounds an awful lot like "interesting aviation news" to me, regardless of who that UA-camr is.

    Unsubbed from Gryder a long time ago - When he started out he actually had pilot safety videos that made sense. Narcissists do not go to the doctor and get a diagnosis. They deceive people around them so that they can get away with their aggressive (and often illegal) activities. Gryder meets the criteria for narcissistic personality disorder. Collection of such evidence has to be done without the cooperation of the individual because they are secretive and habitually lie. Some things to think about:
    1. Would anyone be talking about the light if Dan hadn't taken/pretended to take it?
    2. If it was actually crucial to the investigation, doesn't it seem like law enforcement and the NTSB didn't try very hard to get to the bottom of it or to retrieve the evidence?
    3. Dan shits on the NTSB every chance he gets. Is it possible they are exaggerating the impact of his stunt by mentioning it in their final report? Seems like a weird way to put it, especially with such little effort on their part to legally address it if in fact they had cause. While I think the bit about malignant narcissism was a little heavy-handed, I can appreciate that this Dan has far more knowledge about Dan Gryder than we do & is trying to communicate his concerns without creating drama. Documenting legal cases isn't "trash talking" - those are all public record. AQP can be a list of needed maneuvers. Or a list of unneeded. Depends on who made the AQP. The AQP Dan Gryder promotes dont include EFATO maneuvering, accelerated stalls, Windy GRM or low go arounds. Those maneuvers cause most accidents when done wrong. CFI's that cannot teach them make an AQP without them. A Mild Maneuvering AQP only. A BS AQP.

    Taking that light was a major bonehead move! Forget the tresspass... If he had filmed the wires not connected in situ. he would have made a much better point. Now, everything to do with the light will be dismissed even if he is correct. He did make some very good points about the approach itself, and how the FAA allowed it. IMO the approach to that runway should have been suspended when they put up the stacks. I hope that argument doesn't get lost because of Gryder's lack of self control.

    There's tendency in the comments to write this off as simply a pissing match between two comparable aviation UA-camrs. In truth, the similarity between Dan Millican and Dan Gryder ends at their first name. Only Gryder has used his channel as a platform for wildly sloppy accident analyses built upon knee-jerk speculation and vindictive personal attacks against the deceased and anyone who dares call him out. His behavior spanning years includes many instances of blackmail and defamation against his detractors and has led to multiple restraining orders stemming from harassment of people in aviation (not to mention a recent 1.1 million defamation civil judgement against him). By contrast, one would be hard pressed to find anything similar in Millican's UA-cam presence - the discussions on his channel take safety seriously while focusing on making the aviation community a more welcoming and nurturing space. Sadly, Gryder's style inevitably attracts a number of folks, so the rest of us ignoring him can't mitigate the harm he causes. I'm glad Millican has the courage to stand up to him.

    What's with the child like behavior between you and qryder, this is sad. To see 2 grown men act like this, ps scene was done with from the investigation and returned to the plant to clean up, the planet gave many "private investigators" access to the debris left behind that was getting cleaned up so if he did take it it was wrong but the debris was outside of any enclosed fence for pick up by the scrapers paid to remove it within a few days after he and a few others were on-site including local kids playing. If he did take it from the debris it was 100% wrong it was at that time property of the company doing the cleanup & disposal of the debris.

    Could it be that at some level, Gryder knew he had psychological issues that would have prevented him from obtaining a medical certificate (evidenced by the fact he accused someone else of it, and narcissists tend to project)?
    And if so, if the FAA wasn't so backwards with the way it issued (or denied) medical clearances, maybe Gryder would have seeked the help he apparently needed much sooner?

    • @semidhimmi3184
      @semidhimmi3184 4 місяці тому +4

      The way the FAA does medical certificates, he would only lose his medical certificate if he got help for his pathology.
      A person could be a bipolar paranoid schizophrenic and if they never went to therapy or took medicine for it, they would get their medical certificate without any difficulty.
      Meanwhile, if a pilot is having marital issues due to his schedule and wants to seek psychological help in dealing with it, that person could lose their medical certificate for six months to three years the next time they went in to renew their medical certificate (for airline pilots, this is every six months).
      The FAA medical system is broken and has been since the current rules went into effect in the mid-1980's.
