    I had a small rock tumbler as a kid and drove my parents crazy for a solid month straight when I did a batch!! My sister and her family are moving to a new house soon and I think I will get my nephew a rock tumbler as a housewarming gift...because I'm that kind of brother! 🤣
    Thanks for reminding me how fun polishing rocks is. I look forward to sharing the experience with my nephew. I think he's just about the right age to be interested. A whole month seems like a lifetime at his age. It will also teach him patience and bookkeeping for a long project.

    Joe I must say, these rocks ROCK!! I have a very, very small rock collection and never even heard of rock tumbling until I started following your channel. I have always loved the natural beauty of rocks, stones, pebbles etc. and to see the results after you tumbled yours with the first set you did was truly breath taking and this batch, no doubt, is even more stunning. Maybe some of the more semi precious pieces like the tiger's eye and agates can be made into some form of jewelry? I'm not sure if you're into that but that one piece of agate you showed that was just a stunner would make a beautiful pendant ( for Melissa if she likes those things). Thanks for taking us along with this batch and I look forward to the next batch :-).

    A couple pointers for you, emeralds are softer than agates and should not be jumbled together. They also are very fragile and crack Easley. Also use a plastic colander for rinsing your rocks.the aluminum one that you used can leave marks on the rocks that do not come out with polishing. You did have some very pretty lake Superior agates in your batch

    Hi Joe,
    Your rocks turned out very nice!
    Although I haven't tumbled rocks in about 3-4 years I have tumbled well over a ton of polished rocks but in rotary and vibe units.
    I did all of my roughing (up to 2-1/2 months) for a single batch in the roughing stage.Then I ran the 2nd,3,rd,4th,5th and 6th loads in the vibe units.
    A vibe can do in 12-24 hrs what a rotary takes to do in 7-10 days.
    A suggestion for a much better polished rocks is to only do the same type of rock in any given batch,,,,tiger eye with only tiger eye,,,rose quarts with only rose quarts,,,Montana agate with only Montana agate,etc,etc,etc.
    Why???Because every type of rock differs in hardness,,,maybe slightly,,,maybe a lot.
    When you mix different hardness rocks together,the softer ones will never polish because the harder ones are "scratching" them!
    Your process is very through but if you do a "burnishing" step (after polishing step) with Dreft laundry powder and plastic pellets,you will get a much better shine on the rocks.
    Thanks for a great video series and good luck with future polished rocks!!!
    after looking through your channel I am going to subscribe as you have some very interesting videos!
    Tom

    I don't know if you still have the Brazilian emerald, but you could throw those in with the final stages of your next batch, no? They have a higher mohs' hardness rating and might take a long time to shine but might eventually? I suppose they might scratch the other rocks but they don't seem to have ruined this batch.

      I am in construction and throughout the summer months if I am working on someones house and it has the landscaping rocks around the house I always look and see if I find any agates or cool rocks. I collect them all year and then I see how many I have at the end of the season. I usually do not have enough to quite fill the 6 pound tumbler so I then go online and find some cool polishing rocks from other countries that amazon is selling and I order some. I like getting rocks from around the world and seeing how they polish along with the ones I find.

    I have a question for you. While browsing youtube for DIY rock tumblers, I stumbled upon a channel of another tumbler. When he tumbles rocks he does a fifth step for "burnishing." In this step he combines baking soda, sugar, and ivory soap shavings with distilled water and lets the rocks tumble overnight. I did not notice a difference in the rocks after the last step. Do you think this fifth step helps or makes a difference in the outcome?

  • @magdrama
    @magdrama 5 років тому

    I would appreciate some help, please. One year ago I bought a National Geographic Professional Rock Tumbler Kit and try as I might, I simply can’t get my stones to shine. I have tried time and time again and followed all the steps religiously but nothing. I have often repeated the pre-polish and polish stages and the burnishing, still no joy. I make sure the stones ae similar in hardness and the barrel is totally clean. I live in a hard water area, so I used only bottled water, but it made no difference. Then I tried distilled water, but again, no joy. Can you suggest what else I could do?

    • @NorthernSeclusion
      @NorthernSeclusion  5 років тому

      Email me a picture of the rocks you are trying to polish. Hard or soft water makes no difference, the water here is so hard you can easily taste it when you drink it. homeandcabinconstruction@gmail.com If it is easier to text the actual pictures vs emailing them then email me and I will give you my phone number.

  • @michelesilva9491
    @michelesilva9491 5 років тому

    I just started tumbling. I did my first batch and they turned out dull, no shine at all. I’m disappointed. There are a few things I learned from you that I didn’t do. I did not take a tooth brush to each stone in between sessions. Once the stones got smaller and weren’t taking up 3/4 of the tumbler I did not add anything and lastly I was told to put the water 1 inch above the stones. Do you think these things are why mine came out so dull?? Are there other reason you know of that can cause them to come out dull??

    • @NorthernSeclusion
      @NorthernSeclusion  5 років тому

      The main reason you will get a whole batch that is dull (if you used the correct grit for all 4 steps and left the rocks in each step for a week) is a type of rock in your batch that is not a polishing rock, one that is coarse and is scratching the others. That being said though, by the 4th step usually those softer rocks have all but disappeared because they grind away. But if that happens it then puts little rocks that are scratching. Washing between steps is also a possibility on why. Did you put the correct amount of grit in for each batch? (stupid question but we are just doing a process of elimination) You said you do not have any filler in your batch, is there only big rocks? you need a variety of different sized rocks including small ones especially if you have no filler. The ceramic filler brushes against the rocks and helps to polish. If your rocks have ground down to a smooth size, I would go back and do step 3 and 4 over again. Get some ceramic filler if you can. When you do these two steps over do the water the way I do, with it just coming up. There is a chance that you had too much water in the tumbler which diluted the grit. Just so you know, I have had a few batches that turned out like yours when I was starting out, it is very frustrating because you waited for so long for the end results. Get them back in the tumbler as soon as you can so these next two weeks can get started. lol. Good luck.

    • @michelesilva9491
      @michelesilva9491 5 років тому

      NorthernSeclusion thank you so much for the detailed response. I know the grit was measured right cause it came pre packaged in a starter kit. And I did each step for 8 days with the exception of step 1 which I did for 5. The rocks came with the kit, but I did throw in an old malachite I had. I bought it already tumbled years ago, but I ruined the finish by cleansing it in sea salt not knowing that would dull the finish of that particular stone. By the time the bath was done the malachite completely dissolved. It was either that or the water or the fact that by step 3 the tumbler was only have full, worried it wouldn’t tumble I put water about an inch above rocks. By step 4 the rocks filled it way less then half full so again I put a lot of water. I didn’t know anything about fillers. After watching your video I ordered some but I think it said they were plastic not ceramic, I hope that will be ok. Anyway thanks for the help I will keep at it.

    • @NorthernSeclusion
      @NorthernSeclusion  5 років тому

      Quartz always turns out well, I guess I would for sure go the 7 days on the first two steps, you can sometimes cheat step 3 down to 5 days but I always do step 4 for 7 also. If I am not too impatient I would run them all the 7 days. Sometimes on step one when I am busy or not feeling like switching I will run that up to 10 days. Good luck, that is exciting. I will be starting a batch in about a week.
