The fact that dude basically said "If we would look only on the rich white people our statistics would be better" really blew my mind.

    Re the Norway example....
Firstly, Norway got incredibly wealthy from North Sea Oil.
But rather than enable a few (upper class, elite) people get inordinately rich while the rest couldn't get enough to eat, the Norwegian Government imposed enormous taxes on Oil and Gas exploitation. Then it invested that money in a hugely expanded infrastructure and established a Sovereign Wealth Fund that is the largest in the World.
Of course Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk and Donald Trump would describe that as "Socialist", but that's because they prefer "Free Markets" where they are Free and Everyone else is for them to buy and sell....

  • @Onnarashi

I live in Norway and I'm not sure how he knows people watch more US news than their own. Sure, we get both US news channels (like CNN) on our TV's and we also go online and can read US news sources, but I think for the most part the average Norwegian is more likely to watch Norwegian news, including Norwegian news about the world. I'm sure this holds true in other countries too.
As for geography, I think there are people here in Norway or other countries who don't know where every country in Africa or South America is, for example, but I find that a lot of Americans don't even know very simple and basic things like where the Eiffel Tower is located (one American thought it was in London, UK). So, he's right that people elsewhere lack geographical knowledge, but it seems to me like too many Americans even lack the most basic knowledge.
I think people from outside the USA see Americans as less sincere, because they'll act very friendly from the get-go and ask personal questions, invite you over to their place etc. but then you don't hear from them again, whereas people from "colder" cultures won't smile at you right away and ask personal questions, because they're showing their genuine reaction to you and don't want to create the idea that you're best friends if you aren't.
As for danger, yes there are dangerous places outside of the USA, but let's be real, the US has statistically more shootings and violent crime than most countries in Europe (Ukraine being an obvious exception due to war).
Speaking of health and being overweight, people are overweight outside of the USA, but for example most European countries have far less overweight people, as well as better and cheaper healthcare. Most countries in the world have less overweight people per capita. It's not just about income inequality, but also greedy corporations (pharmacies etc.) and the lack of government regulation and care.
The USA is indeed neo-imperialist. Over 700 military bases around the world, making the US dollar the world currency, starting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Russia is indeed imperialist (in the old sense), as we see from Ukraine, but we can criticise the USA too.

As a European, I don't really know a country in Europe where most people don't speak a second language. And it's very common to have someone speak three languages

    • @michaelodonnell824
      @michaelodonnell824 26 днів тому +3

Regarding the "second language" - In the US, almost 20% of the population identifies as Latinx. Many of those people live in communities and families where Spanish or Portuguese are the same commonly spoken. Additionally, the US contains large communities of first generation immigrants from Korea, Vietnam, Laos and the Philippines and many other countries where English is not the First language. Additionally both Jewish Americans and Muslim Americans, in addition to many Orthodox Christians often carry out religious services in languages other than English.
So the claim that "25% of Americans speak a second language" should be met with the response, "Is that all"?

I'm surprised by how bad the original video is. As with all stereotypes, the stereotypes of the US are just that. However, that doesn't imply that there's no truth in it. Very little of the script had any weight in debunking the stereotypes at all. Creating such a bad video only confirms the stereotypes. The first time I heard gunshots was when I served a year in the military. During the first two month we had recruit training with quite a bit of target shooting, but after that I had an office job in a command center inside a mountain for the next 10 months, so didn't hear any shots after the recruit training. I was 1,5 years in the USA (Pittsburgh, PA) getting my master degree, and I don't think I heard any gun shots then either. I have an aunt who was active in target shooting, and one time I and my brother went to the shooting range with her and got to try her two guns. The only time I have heard gunshots outside a shooting range was in Bogota, Colombia where a guy was running in the street outside the hotel shooting at somebody following him. So that is my total experience with shooting or hearing gunshots during 54 years: target shooting in the recruit training, target shooting once after that, and one incident outside the hotel in Colombia. And I live in Norway, one of the countries with the highest density of private guns in Europe.
As for loans in Europe, it is quite common to have loans and sometimes large loans, but that is mostly because people loan money to purchase an apartment or a house. It might also be student loans to get an education (or finance living while getting an education when the education is free). Of course there are variations among countries, but getting into debt because you fall ill or have an accident is not common in Europe. And of course, our government (in Norway) isn't in net debt.
BTW, I quite liked Pittsburgh and the people I met there, but I would never want to live there instead of Norway. I would probably get a higher salary and keep more of the money I earned, but I do think the way we do it here with free (as in paid by taxes) education, free healthcare and economic support for people who need it make the society safer and better. With the upcoming election, living in USA seems even less attractive. (I wish you get to keep the current president, even though he is way to old, because the alternative seems much worse.)

The point about debt is a bit of an interesting comparision - Especially with the Scandinavian countries.
It is true that in the Scandinavian countries we do tend to have a lot of debt, and even more so than an American, compared to their annual income. The main difference is the type of debt.
The majority of debt in Scandinavia isn't strictly necessary debt, as people do not tend to get loans just to get food on the table (Except students - More on that later).
Consumer debt isn't nearly as prevalent in Scandinavia, as most people rely on debit cards rather than credit cards, so we don't rack up a monthly debt that we then have to cover at the end of the month (If possible). Sure it is possible to get a credit in the banks, but that is usually tied in with a debit card so you can go into minus if you need to, but if you don't it's just a buffer.
Some banks have actually started shutting down those credit agreements if they aren't being utilized, as apparently the mere option of having the option of borrowing money from the bank at a moments notice without filling out any kind of paperwork (Digital or otherwise) in the moment is more expensive for the banks than having their IT systems keep track of it...
Most debt in Scandinavia is for home ownership, so for appreciating assets, rather than to cover mere cost of living or unforeseen serious events.
Most (At least partially unforeseen) events that trigger or increases debt, is something breaking in your home or on your car.
But taking a loan to repair your home often actually ends up a net benefit, because you at the same time improve upon said home and get a benefit in terms of property value.
Cars are in fact one the most common depreciating debt source in Scandinavia, with consumer electronics such as phones being very high on the list.
Ofcourse you also have an optional student loan as a kind of debt that you don't really have anything to show for after the money is spent... Other than having been able to get your education without having to work a full time job, while attending classes full time and having to have time to still do homework etc. and now you're able to earn more than you would if you had joined the unskilled labor market. That debt however is not to a bank or a for-profit entity, so the interest rate is low and you're not expected to pay it back at a rate beyond your means.
So debt in say Scandinavia and in the US is really a rather different beast.

I feel he was being deliberately deceptive in that comment about more Swiss having heard gunfire than US citizens. It is probably true, but that would be because all Swiss males have to do compulsory military service which would include ongoing annual shooting practice . Additionally the outdoor shooting ranges will tend to be in the flat lands ( 80% of Switzerland is classed as mountainous ) which is where the bulk of the population lives.

If 15% of the US population are Hispanics and you assume they are highly bilingual there are only 10% left for knowing a second language. Churchill allegedly said: "I only trust statistics I forged myself".
It's a difference when all German students learn a second language for at least 9 years (often already starting in Kindergarten/preschool) and are able to communicate in this second language and American high school students have a mandatory 2 years in a second language at a point in time when learning language already has become difficult for the individuum.
The presentation of statistics about child mortality and literacy. They may be comparable for "rich, white kids" but that speaks disaster for social equality and access to social, health, and other services for non-rich, non-white citizens or other marginalized groups. European countries tend to be more homogeneous than the US which can contribute to better social cohesion and more equality. But more equality can also be reached by better social programs and official efforts to integrate society as a whole.
I'm very disappointed by the video you reacted to as it seems to be made to console Americans or better said to not shatter the American self-perception of being the best in the whole wide world in everything by presenting devastating facts stating the opposite.
There is no shame in being proud of your country (patriotism) but the American version is often intertwined with the notion of being better than the rest (nationalism) and that's not true and a not just a little disgusting.
We have two sayings that imho fit the American mindset like a glove (it's all a generalization and NOT a comment about certain, single persons - and certainly not a comment about you as you curiously look over the fence to learn and understand). 1. Americans are "riding a high horse", looking down on other peoples and feeling superior. 2. "Pride comes before the fall (from the horse in this case". Announcing your (perceived) superiority doesn't make friends but can lead to complete failure.

Regarding the gun related difference between the USA and Switzerland (No EU country as it goes also for the UK).
Unfortunately in 2024, the United States faced a grim milestone: 247 mass shootings by mid-May, part of a broader landscape where over 7,000 people had lost their lives to gun violence. This unsettling pattern starkly contrasted with Switzerland’s experience, a country known for its high rate of gun ownership-28 guns per 100 inhabitants. Despite this, Switzerland saw only 11 gun homicides and nine attempted gun homicides in 2022.
The discrepancy between these two nations lies not only in their laws but also in their cultural attitudes towards firearms. Swiss regulations are rigorous, demanding extensive background checks and mandatory training for all gun owners. Guns in Switzerland are often linked to national defense and sporting traditions, rather than personal protection.
A notable incident in Switzerland occurred in December 2023, where a rare mass shooting resulted in two deaths. This is a far cry from the frequent and devastating mass shootings in the United States. The Swiss approach to gun ownership, steeped in responsibility and regulation, starkly contrasts with the pervasive and often tragic misuse of firearms in the U.S., highlighting a significant cultural and legislative divide. I have to mention this result regarding that.
The other "misconceptions" are partly true whereas others are totally bullshit. It definitely does not goes for the WHOLE of the USA. Everywhere people live there are a lot of crazy stuff going on. It's like, the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

Here in switzerland the military service is an obligation for every healthy man. They learn to shoot in the military school and when they've finish (9 month if you stay simple soldier) you are in disponibility in case of war. You are retired of the army at around 40yo if that’s not your work (instructors, high ranks etc). During the disponibility years you are regularely convocated for sessions to maintain your military knowledge and some are simply going in a shooting range to train. The shooting ranges are everywhere in the country and most of the time they aren’t covered and soundproof areas so it’s rare for someone in switzerland to never have heard a shooting session. During your military time you keep your militarygun at home BUT the breech need to be separated from it and you can’t have bullets out of the shooting range. Having a permit to have a gun as a civilian is a big investement in time (hours of training and administration papers) and money, plus the strict verification of your totally blank criminal record. On top of all of that there is a LOT of rules about how you can carry your gun but i don't know everything because I don’t know any gun carrier.

To some extend we have a similar issue in France, which tends to make the society a bit more tense than it should unfortunately. The two-party system tends to increasingly polarize opinions into thinking the other camp is evil and a threat to society and to inhibit the ability to communicate normally with the other camp (that works for both left and right).Unfortunately for us, the Internet only amplifies this phenomenon with algorithmic filter bubbles that basically helps people's natural tendency to interact only with people like them.

On the topic of US imperialism, one thing is rarely mentioned. Around the time of the Cold War, the USA propped up several dictatorships in different parts of the world. Pinochet in Chile and Suharto in Indonesia, for example. Sometimes even intentionally removing democratically-elected leaders along the way and subsequently morphing into a "dirty war" that included extrajudicial arrests and even killings. Many in the west can talk about Russia's involvement in Europe after WW2 as not being so great for democracy, but one could even go so far a to say that the USA had its own Iron Curtain in Latin America. Also, have a look at the Middle East, Syria for example, where Russia and America support opposing sides thus perpetuating the conflict. The USA and Russia are both responsible for maintaining conflict. Both sides are kind of bad.

As a kid growing up in New Zealand, we learned a pretty fair mishmash of history and geography. Our largest sector of the population is descended from Europeans (mostly from the UK.) We also learned about the American Civil War in high school - as well as the Irish Civil War. I don't think there was much content from Mainland Europe. We were fortunate that we did not become a country (as recognised by others) until 1840, by which time the British Empire was much more reasonable than it had been. NZ was the first country in the world to grant every adult the vote (including women and Maori). Patriotism is great, but not to the point of failing to recognise areas you can improve. EVERY country can do some things better.

"Some colleges offer scholarships for eligible Native American students regardless of financial need. The University of Rochester School of Nursing, the University of Olivet, New York University Grossman School of Medicine, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine offer free tuition for all students."
WRONG!! MOST Europeans speak 2, 3, or 4 languages. Maybe they don't speak English but they speak other European languages. I know that Germans, overall on average, speak about 75%-85% English, if not more. French speak English but prefer that English people attempt speaking French first. "Over 20% of the U.S. is bilingual"... I bet that he is not!! I'm not liking his misconceptions. I doubt that he's even been outside the U.S. Also, the U.S. does NOT have an "official language".

I feel safer in Munich and Berlin than I do in Dallas. I have heard gunfire in different parts of Dallas.

I don't think he truly understands how languages work in Europe. While some countries may not have the proper mindset to learn those other languages, the incentive is still there. Because Almost every country has their own language (yes, some neighboring languages can be/are very similar) most of us have to learn at least English to be able to communicate with the rest of the world. In addition, you need to know more than your own language if you want to do business with others. I dare say vast majority of Europe is at least bilingual. Some by nature, some because they need to be.
On the other hand, he might have forgotten that about 20% of the US population is hispanic and they are in most cases bilingual to begin with.
He's acknowledging some points but he's also providing some biased takes that don't quite hold water.

    - i do agree with the car thing; i do live in a mid-sized city now, but outside the downtown core (which is basically a few blocks), you can't really do anything without a car
    - i used to previously live in North-Central NJ suburbia, and i felt pretty safe there; did not hear or see any gun violence (or even civilians carrying guns) in the 6+ years i was there.... i live in The South now, and even though there's a firearms shop at the intersection near my place and a gun aisle at Walmart which makes me nervous every time i pass by, i personally have not been in the vicinity of anyone brandishing a gun, so 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂

Hmm no, the U.S. clearly forced Europeans to adopt U.S. media and culture and sometimes military gear, with the Marshall plan, and when selling arms with clauses that forbid the countries to modify the gear in any way or use those weapons for whatever they want (which I can understand to a degree and other countries impose that), the U.S. meddling a lot in South America also was a big issue. I’m sorry but there is a lot of bias in this video. Way too much to be actually objective. I agreed at the beginning but towards the end it’s not really that fair anymore. Using 2 random Europeans living there is not an excuse to do and say whatever you want, much less releasing a video without doing actual research and presenting both sides of the argument (and sources)

In Switzerland they have military service so they obviously have a heard some guns shot, just not in their daily life. They have guns but at home. I went to Switzerland dozens of time and never see a gun (except at the French border by the police).
Regarding patriotic he's definetily wrong. Here in France or in other country in Europe we're are not that patriotic, i mean except when it comes to football (i mean soccer
    😆).
No we won't smile at every single person in the street, our zygomatic muscles are not trained for that 😅. Joking apart, it depends where you are. In small cities or villages in France, people tends to smile more easily.
The problem is not that you call football soccer, the problem is that you call football a game where you use your foot almost 2% of the time.
Regarding AC, I definitely disagree. Leaving in the south of France, old houses were designed to keep the heat in winter and freshness during the summer. In France we have big heat wave during 2 or 3 month maximum. For the moment, AC is kind of luxury feature. We open windows at night (with mosquito screen) and close the outside shutters preventing the sun to heat the house in the afternoon. By the way, the climate (even in South Europe) is more tempered in Europe than in the US (especially southern and western states).
Regarding the suburbs in the US, the probleme is not that people lived there. The problem is the poor design of your suburbs (but you made a react of it so you know about it)
Not being the worst, doesn't mean US doesn't have imperialistic behavior 😉
Regarding the far-right crazy christian, we definitely have the same here in Europe.

I love even in the first part about geografi you instantly go... Jees is this how its gonna go.
First off where are the two europeans from? You cant just say 2 people from 1 or 2 countries are judges and examples of all the 50 european nations. Unlike america even EU is not one nation.
America doesnt know geografi but thats because they dont watch foreign things. Well duh thats kinda part of the point. America doesnt care about foreign things. We watch american things because we DO care about foreign things. Its not like its forced on us. We just naturally have foreign media accepted easily. In america if its not american then it will barely see the light of day. This is social and cultural isolationism in a sense and it is a huge part of why americans dont know much about anything outside.
If you chose to live in a bubble then dont be surprised you wont know stuff.
You cant say "we simply dont educate ourselves so it wouldnt be fair to compare us to others who do".
Also then goes on to compare itself with one of the most socially isolationist european populations... Ah yes im sure the nation known for culturally ignoring everyone and splitting from collaboration and EU and much much more, are a great example of the general population of european nations who ARE interested in outside information.
People outside watching US made movies and media surely isnt the reason we know what the continents are and what are the capitals of countries and so on.
Just admit that americans dont really care about foreign media and information in general and move on.
Sure the british are well known for not giving a shit about whats outside britain but that doesnt excuse that americans are unable to name even their closest allies capitals.
I suck at geografi compared to people in my country and i can still name 90% of european countries and their capitals off the top of my head. I can name most US states and i can name most asian countries capitals as well.
Again i am talking about what you can name just off the top of your head not if you actually sat down and spent real time on it.
Ive often been ridiculed by my family, colleagues and friends (in a friendly manner obviously) for being bad at geografi.
The average american score way lower than most geografi surveys than almost every other western country.
Im not saying this is some horrible thing, but it is ridiculous that something shown in survey after survey and study after study is defended by "well people from this random european country also isnt good at it"
Its simply a fact that american education focuses less on teaching international stuff and that the average american doesnt go out of their way to experience foreign culture or media unless its canadian, mexican or british pretty much.
The idea of trying to explain away the weaknesses of a population rather than embracing and bettering themselves is partially why people get upset with many americans. The unwillingness to admit flaws... its like china and russia.
Lets me extend an olive branch here! My country is horrible at refuge management! The crisis has let my country to grow very anti asylum seeker. I can freely admit that flaw why cant americans admit theirs?
Again its not all americans but it is EXTREMELY common to see and hear the excuses made and the whataboutism. "but what about britain they also suck". "But what about russia". and so on.

He's example of the debt, is non sense. Comparing it to household income is irrelevant. You can easily have a very high debt, but banks tend to want security for it. Let's say your house is worth 2,4 mill DDK and household income is 600K, it is 400 % in he's way of comparison. Building/buying a house here in DK, is very much an investment, if you build a house in your early twenties, you might end up being wealthy when you are +50. Houses are well build and stands for 100 years or more. In the town I live, there are houses that are 400 years old.
He's video was primarily subjective things, like all USAnians are hill billies. How do we European define a Hill billy? Way too few objective and factual things.
    Try again Mister.

Well, that guy (in the video) might know stuff about The US, but when he compares The US to Europe, his knowledge are pure hearsay or rather, I fear, him knowingly lying ! 🙄

It's fine to not be good at geography, but if you don't know where China or Russia are on a world map, that's a serious problem. Those problems exist in Europe too, but it is far less common...

I mean, of course it's your own body and all, but as long as you're pregnant you shouldn't expose yourself to any stress, that means no videos that could stress you out. I just wanted to say in case you didn't know, nothing more
