One of the best videos I have seen. I feel like once you get a basic understanding of poker you realize how good this video is. It is just about the easiest way to take a jump to the next level but taking the time to watch this video.
I also think this should only be used once you have an understanding of when you probably should fold. I think if I tried to play this agressive when I first started, I would not know when to step aside because the aggression/bluff wasn't working because I was crushed.

I recently started playing poker. I can never thank you enough for making me realize that all those losses that i thought were bad beats are actually not. They are just some suck outs. This gives me hope and the desire to continue. This is by far the best lesson i have ever seen.

three of a kind, when it is a set, can improve my either pairing the board, or making four of a kind.
On the flop there are only 2 cards you can pair on the turn. On the turn there are now 3 cards you can pair on the river, which is what accounts for those additional 3 outs.

Dear Gripsed or other people watching this video in 2016,
Aren't the odds in the table at 34:00 a bit too low?
When having 9 outs, the chance of hitting an out is 9/(52-5)+9/(52-6), which is 38,7%,
while on this table it says the chance provides you a chance of only 35,0%
The same thing applies to the other equities.
Please tell me if I'm wrong or made a mistake in my calculation.

Sir I have been playing poker casually for a couple years. Realised like a year ago unless you're playing with buddies theres always someone who wants your money so it isnt something to go at casually! For me anyways with not tons of money!! I am also no great at math, go figure, but I love poker. I like to think I have a decent 'stock' game so to speak. Dont do much stupid stuff. But this video puts all the little breakdowns I (and ton of others I am sure), am having troubles trying to put a finger on to do with the ACTUAL theory side of things!! Made super simple as well. Explained a couple things I was having trouble with really well. Thank you.

Yes, TT-QQ are blockers to AK making a flush, but their increased equity vs AK (as compared to 22's equity) is actually mostly due to the lowered risk of being counterfeited (e.g. on a double-paired board).
What a great video. Never knew about Pot Odds and betting before this. Then again, I am a recreational player. Be good to have a quick chart linking Pot Odds with Call or Fold decisions post flop with the caveat about Implied Odds.

take the odds of both required cards and multiply them. so for the flush you had 10 outs to hit the turn (21.3%) x 9 outs to hit the river (19.6%) = 4.17%
your odds of making a runner runner flush are about 24:1
I am trying to bust out of my Elephant animal type and turn Lion or Tiger. I, for maybe the 1st time ever floated air and made my backdoor flush not once, but twice. I would have not known that was 24-1 odds. I am glad for this reality check. Sometimes online poker is unreal...

Excellent video. I’m a little unclear on how to find what good hands to play. If I only play strong hands, then my opponents won’t be betting much against me, but if I play a wider range of hands, then I’d be losing more money. If you could help me understand, I’d appreciate it.

IMO when playing the lowest stakes the most important part of your game is value betting. Also the stations at micros are willing to call anything with any piece so if you think you are ahead v a station just bet near the pot on each street and get the most from them. Playing multiple tables will increase your win rate as you play less hands and thus the top end of your range. Bluffing is only really good v the grinders who only want to play the fish and wont bother fighting back that often

I'm wondering if you should always be aggressive...other videos you have said to play differently than other players...so if everyone is playing aggressive...do you play passive and wait for good cards or just keep your same game?
Aggression is usually the way to go, but it's all situational. When you have the best hand and they have little to no equity it's ok to play possum and do the ole 'rope a dope' technique :)

it might be easier to learn if you standardized the stats so they can easily be compared for better analysis. For example: pot odds 3:1, odds to improve hand 4:1, odds of winning 9:1. it is confusing to hear 75 percent, then hear three out of four then see 75/25.
Hey gripsed I just want to start by thanking you for the leaps and bounds of information you've passed down, im still wrapping my head around some of the math and was just curious as to why you have better odds to flop a flush draw (with suited hole cards) then a straight draw (with connecting hole cards), but yet still better odds to flop a straight then a flush given the same hole card situations?
that math goes a bit beyond me, any math geniuses out there wanna field this one??

Thanks for putting out the content what do you think about the youtube video's showing fulltilt and poker stars being rigged, is it jaded players or is it a concern? I'm seeing so many flush and straight beats I'm starting to wonder....
that would go against their foundational business model, which is to make money via rake.
therefore sites have full incentive to make the games as fair (card randomness) as possible.
*people tend to remember the rare outcomes (bad beats) and forget the normal outcomes (where the odds play out)
Kolo Kai real cards never fall like they do online. Wether they are rigged or their algorithms are wack, either way it’s not real and if you play using math, you will loose most of the time.

on the Math Pot odds devide your call into the pot drawing odds look up the rule of 4 and 2 which is Outs times 4 plus 1 0r 2 and 2 times outs times 1 or 2 9 outs X 2 =18+1 is 19% 4 outs X2=8 +1 9% they need to equil each other or be cheaper on the call

How do you use pot odds for calling on the flop when you are going to face more betting on the turn and different pot odds there?
(Is pot odds on the flop meaningless?)
Pot odds is what you use when planning for the next street. If you expect to face 2 bets then you would calculate your odds on each street.
Knowing the odds with 1 card to come and 2 cards to come is very helpful as it will help you find the +EV situations!

30:45 - I think that Straight Draw doesn't necessarily has to have 8 outs, it's pretty common sense that you can have a straight draw with a 1 card gap OR when your straight is lowest or highest. For example you have A3, the board is 24J, you have 4 outs and that are 5 of each suit. There are only 8 outs of you have an open straight draw such as 89TJ, where the outs are Q of each suit and 7 of each suit, 2 cards times 4 suits = 8 outs. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks
+Hugh Jainus A straight draw implies open ended (or double belly buster/gut shot- such as TJ on a 78KA board). The gut shot/belly buster is usually referred to if you have the 4 out straight draw.

Would you adapt the math for MTTs ? Especially in turbos, I think bluffing comes at a higher price since there is usually less room for bluffing without directly risking a 25-50% of your stack. So, how does the math change taking the importance of stack protection into account? Or at least, getting comfortable with being aggressive and losing many MTTs in cases of failed bluffs. Especially in the later states of the tournament, the progress you made becomes more valuable.

Hi Evan. Thanks for all your videos, think they are great. Just a quick question. Early on in the video you said that a player will miss the flop 50% of the time yet when you do the odds of flopping something (around 31 mins) you say there is a 33% chance of flopping a pair? Is the other 17% a person flopping draws?

when you have KQ hearts and the flop came JT hearts or JT9 you dont flop a pair...but you missed the flop!?

do you take in to consideration the rake when calculating pot odds?
Obviously in a home game with no rake If I'm getting the right odds to call it's a no brainer, but if the rake at the casino or online site bring me below the odds to required should I then fold? In other words when there is a rake should I be looking for slightly better odds than I would when there is no rake?
I don't, but if you're playing full time and considering every dollar then yes paying attention to rake is worth doing.

you mentioned that Pairs and High Cards ie A10 might make better hands one on one, but if 4 or 5 people are seeing the flops, you have better equity if you are on a draw. Also, you mentioned that Equity at the Beginning of the hand isnt the same as at the end of the 7 cards.... But how often are you betting the Turn and River with more than one or two other players? as you bet the Turn, arent you still weeding out weaker hands and, as such, creating a one-on-one or 3 way pot? and (sorry for the compound question,) since going for 3 of a kind or 2 pair is masked better, and if you have a draw and the draw comes in, you're likely to get paid Less when you get there...unless you've been double barreling like a semi bluff........Your thoughts?

Great lesson Evan. Thanks. Need help to quickly figure out weather a call is profitable. If a pot has $100 and the call is $50 making the pot $150 that’s 3:1 or 25% So if I’m drawing to a gutter after the flop that’s 4 cards x 4% (2% on the river) = 16% I would say no, don’t call. Is that correct?
Correct but on flop you have 8% Vs 25%, a good opponent will not give a good price after flop

Hey Evan I got a question. Is it true that the calculation of the BESR and Pot odds look the same but have different outcome? or am I doing it wrong?
I'll give you an example how I did this, the pot is 100 and we face a bet of 25
BERS: 25/(25+100) = 1/5 or 20%
Pot odds: (100+25)/25 = 5:1 or 16.66%

there's always situations like this, the key is being patient enough to wait for them and aware enough to spot them!

it seems that for the agressive strategy to work, the hero would have to always do same thing with same cards. Example, always go all in when you flop straight flush (SF) draw, no exception. If you did not go all in with SF draw some times and randomly win more small pots but other times went all in on SF draw then randomly lost some of those, doesn't that screw up your odds of winning long term. It seems you would have to win higher percentage of the small pots to balance the losses on big pots. Is this correct?

You are not taking into account people folding to your raise.
This pot odds formula help to see when u call is it profitable or not, in the vid you say str8 draw or flush draw will be profitable if opponent bet 25 into 100 on the flop. It defnitely looks profitsble to me uh. But the formula [25+100]/ 25 = 5 is to 1 (20%)
Straight draw is 8 outer, 17.6%. (equity)
But base on formula isnt this a losing call. Equity is < pot odds. So was wondering how do you gauge whether its a profitable call based on the formula, calling 1/4 for a 8 outer draw is definitely profitable to me. But i am curious on how to use the formula to gauge.

Hey Evan, I have question for you: I'm right now kinda "practicing" on play money NLHE tables, and there are a lot of annoying donkeys shovin All-In with basically any given 2 cards in any hand. I use to buy in around 200 BB. So what is the best way to play against such players in the future? I know I have to be more paitent in waiting on good cards to call their shoves, but what kind of cards should I play here? Should I call with, lets say, 22 or A4 off? or JT?
in MTTs, ill generally let them get knocked out if theyre all in preflop, If its early in a tournament and i dont have a read on them its not best to assume they are donkeys though cuz then you can get koed easily. BUT if I know someones being going all in with weird hands like 10-6 offsuit and shit, and clearly isnt bluffing with having everyone covered and being in position(really pay attention) I will call with like 77+/TJs,TAs QKo, even TT+ if theyre a tighter donkey, its honestly personal decision, you just wanna be trying to play good poker and not caving in to their gameplay, wait for the hands where you can see the flop if you have to, you'd be surprised how far you get in a MTT sitting out in comparison to amateurs and donkeys, its actually funny, i know im not evan but felt i should offer my 2 cents
Limp most pots, valuetown them to death when you make a hand, never bluff... position is something free money players have no idea about. gl
can't practice on free money. make a small deposit and play 2nl if you want to play cash. Just learn the basics there and climb up. Even there it's not a lot to learn.

Let's say im in a 9-handed game, i get heads up in a pot and bluff my opponent out on the turn he holds AhQd and i have 8c5s. Flop was K69 one diamond and turn is 2 of diamonds. im struggeling with calculating his equity and therefore the net. gain cause i can hit 10 cards to win and he can hit 18 i think because you start with 52 cards -4flop - 2 burn - 18 hole cards(14mucked) so if there are 28 cards left before the river am i right for assuming his equity is 36% ?? or am i doing it wrong ?
Hi there, you don't count the burned or mucked cards because you dont know what they are. By taking them out of the equation, it's like you're saying that you know those cards are worthless (but you dont! what if the mucked cards had two of your outs and three of the people who folded held other outs for you?!). This is why you need to calculate equity as if every card not in your hand/on the board might come up on the flop/turn/river.

Hi i am a begginer in poker for now,i only play with my friends ,and they are also begginers.The 2 problems i get and i don't know how to solve it is almost all the time they call the blind if nobody raise it pre flop,they rarely fold,the second one is that each time i want to raise to make them fold they still call even when they have J 4 off and sometimes we reach the showdown and they have the stronger hand..... So what i'm trying to say is how much should i raise if my stack size is around 500 and the bb is 10? or how i should approch the situation?
+Buta Dan Play like a NIT. Wait until you have a good hand with over a 50% chance to win and bet sizable amounts. If they just blindly call you, this is an easy way to take advantage of them. Once they realize they are losing to you a lot when you bet big, you can start bluffing more. Don't think that just because you think you are a good player that you can win with any hand every single time.

What was mentioned about A10 suited vs. J10 suited?
The benefits of Ace suited vs other suiteds is that when they make a flush, it's the nut flush, and you'll often get to play for stacks against hands which are drawing dead.
JT is special in that it makes more nut straights than most hands, and also flops top pair a decent amount of the time. But with J high flushes some caution is usually required

Tilt equity is when you throw someone off their game and they start playing worse as a result. It's a real thing, just hard to quantify in mathematical terms.
