Let me end the console gen argument right here:
-If a game came out today, and it’s only on PS4, then it is a PS4 game that came out during the PS5 generation. (So Bond’s example of the dreamcast games would fit here)
-If a game came out today, and it dropped on both PS4 and PS5, It is a cross gen game. But If you had to pick which gen game it is, it is a PS5 gen game (because it came out during PS5 gen, and you can play it on PS5). Persona 3 Reload is a PS5 gen game, even if persona 3 reload is on PS4 and it dropped on PS4 at the same time as the other platforms.
-That cyberpunk example was a grey area and if we’re being honest, cyberpunk shouldn’t have even dropped on PS4.

The confusion comes from how everyone interprets the phrase "a 9th generation game". When BG says " a 9th generation game" he is referring to a game that came out "during" the life of the 9th generation of consoles. When the others hear this phrase, they are thinking of a game that released "on" the 9th generation of consoles. I side with BG with this because the general consensus (video game industry media) sides with BGs terminology. When this generation ends, and when IGN and gamespot etc does a list/video on the "best games of the generation" are you telling me that they are not gonna include Elden Ring on the list, because it came out on the PS4?

Regarding the topic of console generations, there were two different conversations being had and two different arguments being presented. BG and Taarec were arguing about console generations in regards to time, while Jack and Bond were arguing about console generations in regards to platforms and systems. Jack and Bond were saying BG and Taarec are wrong while BG and Taarec were saying that Jack and Bond were arguing about something else entirely.
The Last of Us Part II is a last-gen game while God of War Ragnarök is a cross-gen game, and Returnal is a current-gen game. This is what Jack and Bond were discussing to BG and Taarec.
BG’s favorite game last generation was God of War 2018, while his favorite game this generation (so far) is God of War Ragnarök. This is what BG and Taarec were discussing to Jack and Bond.

I agree with BG about not wanting Rocksteady to be shut down after one failure, obviously, but we also need to consider that the SS game was intended as a live-service title to run for the next 3-5 years, AND had two marketing runs because of the delay. That $200m loss is probably only the beginning when you account for how the game won’t break even in the long run considering the costs of development for future content that will / has likely already been cancelled due to the initial loss.

They won’t…and they shouldn’t. Not everyone who has a PlayStation has a pc and not everyone who has a pc owns a PlayStation. There is good reason to have both, but putting games on pc doesn’t really have much of an impact on the 95% of PlayStation owners who only have one gaming platform.
Like the other person said, it is essentially free money for sales of 2+ year old games that have exhausted potential console purchases. The difficulty of getting the games on pc is low and a full studio isn’t even required to complete the task. Sony is making more money by doing this, which allows them to continue making new games and supporting older games.

I agree with Bond and Jack which is rare for me regarding cross gen. A game like BOTW was made for Wii U at its core. Link uses a Wii U gamepad in the game! The UI was designed for a touch screen!
The UI isn't even touchscreen compatible and both consoles are touchscreens. Wii U gamepad doesn't even work while playing BOTW. So that's not necessarily true. It's pretty clear that development accompanied the Switch fairly early because if that wasn't the case, why did the game get delayed for nearly two years? It was supposed to be released in 2015. Nintendo knew the Wii U was dead by 2014, we knew about Project NX, now Switch, in 2015.

The reason the rules are now in question is because crossgen has been extended way beyond the typical grace period, with the consensus that improvements are far more incremental in nature than previous generations.
Using release date worked far better pre-x86 and pre-COVID. Now there needs to be a serious conversation about what earns the right to be classed as “next gen”, particularly with cost and waiting time both increasing.
