Amazing. I know Madama Butterfly for more than 40 years, but this is the first time I listen to the original version. So many differences ...

@@mf8_composer And there are even more differences in the second act I have listened after I posted this comment, particularly in the second part of the second act, what we are used to call now the third act. Of course, no Adio fiorito asil in V1, but there is so much music I had never heard before ! This is a very strange sensation : as I know Madama Butterfly by heart (this is the opera which made me discovering and loving opera and I've listened to it hundred of times - and each time I cry like a little girl -), listening to the original version is almost like listening to an unknown opera of Puccini suddenly rediscovered in the composer's archives ... This is a piece of history and in this way, this is very emotionnal, thanks for posting it. I would like to know now the other versions the maestro made before the final version (ie Madama Butterfly 5.0), but I don't know if some recordings of the intermediate versions exist. Btw, I tried to find the libreto of V1, as I wanted to read the lyrics. Do you know if we can find it somewhere ?

I have finished this first act and I want to say something: Puccini was not only a wonderful composer but also one of the best musical drama composers. Almost all the cuts were well done, in order to put the musical theater on the right way. He stressed the right places. And mostly all those cuts had no memorable music, not a waste of a wonderful melody, for example.

For example the way Puccini makes bloom the phrase between 15:50 and 16:05 in the new version.

Yes Puccini was one the greatest and more underrated composer of all times.
The most important differences between these versions are the characterization of Pinkertorn (in the orginal version is more clear that he is a superficial and selfish) and the focus on secondary character (like the uncle Yakusidei).
I think the first version is more autenthic while the current version is more "commercial".
In the first version the love Beetwen Pinkerton and Butterfly is more realistic and dramatic (Pinkerton dosen't really love Cio Cio San), in current version they seems more romantic lovers...it change all the meaning!
I hope I make it clear in a single comment.
But I can speak for hours about Puccini ahaha
