- New York Times bestselling author and humorist A.J. Jacobs is back with another chronicle of an immersive experiment. As recounted in his new book, "The Year of Living Constitutionally," Jacobs spent a year exploring the language and history of our nation's founding document and amendments, sometimes with a musket in tow. He talked with CBS News' John Dickerson about the Constitution's balance of powers, created to protect against a tyrant; the logistics of petitioning the government; and the joys of writing with a quill pen.

"Putting others before ourselves," What a concept!
And my main use of my right to bear arms is to protect others.
But not the Slaves or the Natives.
@@sheldonthomas8773the Constitution was revolutionary enough to provide a road map for slaves to become citizens. It was an existential turning point in human history. You have the freedoms and rights to complain about it because of the same text that allowed a group of farmers to defeat the world's greatest empire and establish a foundation of democracy that shines upon literally billions around the world today.
Sorry the framers of the Constitution didn't adhere to your twenty first century sensitivities when drafting their terrible document. Feel free to propose a better alternative.
With freedom comes responsibility! We need to remember this in order for a democracy to survive!
With great powers, comes great responsibility.
This guy seems crazy in a really good way. Thanks for sharing. : )
Good for him. There is nothing better than history 🎉
I always wonder what our Dine’ (Navajo people) were doing at the time the “founding fathers” were creating the document. And were indigenous people a part of the line , “We the people…” This thought has always stayed with me through middle school, high school, college history courses.
- well, to be honest, I believe they were generally only thinking of white males. Women definitely weren't on their list. I suspect most others would be considered "less-than" as well. Even when some hesitated in the end they would have "othered" anyone that didn't look like themselves. And probably those that didn't speak a language they understood.
The Constitution has its first three words in the Preamble, and that is "We the People"
Yet, is isn't for all the people, is it!
Yes it is. Read it again.
And as GOP Congresscritters say, "There are no pronouns in the Constitution!"
This guy is so cool. I do historical reenacting and love it! I'm going to die with my stays on! 😀
While some may be amused by Mr. Jacobs' eccentric approach to his "Constitutionally Living", the mere fact that he's immersed himself in this (and apparently dragged his loving wife along with it).....I cant put into words what I felt watching this ...bittersweet....melancholy ....I dont know...but it sort of made me tear up a little bit too....What most of us citizens of these great United States do not want to see however, is our great Constitution used in a manner to attack these great United States and it's citizens either. I'm pretty sure Jacobs has some lessons about our Constitution in his new book....and I look forward to reading it!!
I've read Know-It-All and A Year of Living Biblically, and his wife is right -- this adventure is small potatoes compared to what he put himself through for the other books. Highly entertaining and thought-provoking author.
@@linguaphile42 Thanks for your insight and thanks for those other two titles....I'm definitely getting this newest one first!!! Appreciated your input!
Ding DIng Ding Give this person a Bubble Gum Cigar! Righteo!
Living Constitutionally is not something we should have to “imagine” 🇺🇸
When he spoke about rights and responsibilities. He is spot on. We live in an America that it's people and politicians do not value citizenship. And do not take into consideration the responsibility's one has to each other and the country. Only what they can get.
My first pen, was an ink pen. The big breakthrough was the fillable pen. And yes, stained fingers.
Putting others before ourselves. Obviously, some who have held the office never read or understood that concept.
A "penknife" was originally a knife for trimming goose-quill pens.
Thank you Jane for being you....
AJ. You goofball. God bless....
He looks like a possible member of Monty Python.
Well said! 👍🏼👏🏻🌹
I admire his passionate pursuit to learn more about the constitution.
🙏
❤
I hope his next book is on the Neolithic age.
Or paleolithic.
If only our representatives actually did this rather than just pointlessly trying to impeach eachother all the time.
Wise words many people wish to ignore these days !
We should still be worried about troops being quartered in our homes. Yes, that’s how up to date your constitution is….
One of my biggest voting issues is NO QUARTERING TROOPS in my single bedroom apartment! Lol
John Mulaney has a great bit on this btw that should be on UA-cam if you have a few mins and want a laugh
Yeah, we should be. And it's not outdated
Don't think it can't happen again.
Parchment 👍
Sen. Wyden doesn’t listen to anything anyways.
Explain
He missed the major concept - federalism. The States are sovereign and it is the Constitution that provides as mechanism of those sovereign entities to cooperate in mutually beneficial ways. In the end, that is all the constitution is or was before it was usurped and the agent became the master of the sovereign.
I'd argue from a political theology perspective you're describing a confederation more than the union the Constitution was aiming to create. The articles of confederation were ineffective, and with the federal government absorbing state debt, it essentially established more of a republic.
1:48 His musket is almost certainly a "replica" rather than an actual "antique" from over 200 years ago.
Probably...but if there is one guy that I believe would buy a real one and run around playing with it, it's this guy
What about the Slaves and the Natives?
What about them? Not sure if you heard the news but they've been free and citizens for some time.
Don't why more State Don't promoting 13 Colonies flag?
So ironic, CBS doing a story on a subject they despise.
Explain
I say it's up to God. Without Him we can do NOTHING!
He's the Potter, we're the clay. We're too stupid to do it without Him!
Would you say any higher purpose fits? Or do you believe other people need God from Christianity to live?
Not trying to be disrespectful in any way I’m just honestly curious. I grew up Catholic, but to me, I more see ~God~ now as the universe and why we exist rather than nothing ever coming to be.
@@colehowe
I also grew up Catholic but there were certain views of the world from it's teachings that led me to become VERY aware of the spiritual conflict that we humans are in the middle of for the conditioning of our souls and therefore the shaping of our REALITY and cultures. It is all well kept hidden until it becomes OBVIOUS.
you are. l am not!!
