With all the access we have to thousands of channels of programming, today's generation could not imagine how exciting it was to have these type of quality fights on Saturday afternoon network TV. Don't get me wrong, I'm appreciative of what we have today but there was something special about circling an exciting match in the TV guide and looking forward to it all week :-)
I've grown to respect Hamsho over the years. With all the bad PR in the 80's with the middle-east and being a kid, along with Mustafa beating so many fighters I rooted for, I didn't care for him and considered him a crude and dirty bully. But he was really an old-school type fighter, super gutsy southpaw who came up super hard. Really good fighter.
The announcer has to be Chris Schenkel. As a kid and teen I really enjoyed his approach in explaining what was going in any sport he did. Imagine watching bouts like this practically every weekend on regular TV.
Spilt decision?! God help us alll. Hamsho couldn't deal with Hagler but he had a run of wins against a lot of decent names. Mauling, brawling but smart too.
I actually scored it a draw. About even. Always enjoyed watching Minter fight. He was aesthetically pleasing to watch, with his classical European boxing style. Hamsho was just a very strong, gutsy club fighter. But it was a good fight. The winner however..got to be executed by the monster Hagler. Just as well Minter didn't win. I didn't want to see him massacred by Hagler again. He was always a classy humble guy. RIP champ.
I might have scored it as Jerry Roth did....In favour of Minter. Allan neutralized pretty well every attack by Mustafa. A very good contest but I'm not too sure of the split decision. Neither one got the better of the other.
Never liked Hamsho style of boxing. He was a very dirty fighter, I so wanted him to fight the other three kings, but I believe Leonard didnt want to fight him while Hearns and Duran had their hands full with other fights but atleast Marvin Hagler got to fight him, and Hagler clobbered him both times.
Given that the winner would fight Hagler for the title it's as well Minter lost as he'd have fared little better than the first time he fought Hagler. Spirited fight though.
95-95. Could not fit a wafer between them. But Alan was slightly past his best here. The Minter of the second Vito fight would have outslicked Hamsho. Good fight.
I've spared with minter in the 70s I knocked him down with a left hook he said I should turn pro he was impressed I was only 14 he was 20 he was not as good as me though
Tough, close fight. Minter didn’t get credit (from two of the judges, anyway) for landing more-and cleaner-punches. A lot of them were quick, short punches that caught Hamsho as he bulled in. I suspect they weren’t easy for the judges to see. Either that, or they simply favored Hamsho’s aggressiveness (even though it was largely ineffective).
Hamsho is a great example of how judges simply don't like certain styles, the human element of boxing. Here Jerry Roth scores against him on a good 6 point swing. Now Jerry roth is a notoriously lousy judge but still. Watching this again it's still clear that hamsho won a majority of the rounds even though minter was very competitive in every round. Its how we end up watching a fight and being shocked by a decision.
This was a good fight. A little too much holding for my taste. But I understand why a fighter holds. Also the ref broke up the holding way too fast!! Both fighters threw hard shots. But I think ramsho was a little more accurate, and harder hitting. And a little bit more busy. Just my humble observation.
@@andrewanderson8551 I haven't to be fair. Must have been well timed , Minter was hurtfull for sure , always felt he lacked a big bomb in his back hand. He was and remains a big hero of mine
I have spared with Mustafa in Gramercy Gym back in the late 70 s.
Again one of those underrated fights
2 old school wonderful boxers,
Big respect
Rip Alan

Free. Yes, free.

Two great fighters here, think Minter just nicked it, but it was mighty close so no robbery here. Sad to hear of Alan’s passing RIP champ.
Always liked Mustafa Hamsho for his perseverance and toughness.
Dirty fighter, he tried to headbutt Hagler at least twice in their fight.
@@johnmc3862 true but Hagler busted him up in their first fight, then in their second fight Hagler rearranged his face
@@Robert-qm5soyeah Hamsho really got Hammered by Hagler! Hamsho to tough for his own good in them two fights he had with Hagler 🥊
I taught Minter's son Maths for two years. He had more character than anyone I have ever met.
underrated fight IMO. two very tough fighters here.

Yep!😁
If not for Hagler, Hamsho would have won a strap. Tough, great chin and strong as hell.
Mustafa Hamsho was one of the dirtiest fighters during that era , but when he clashed with Hagler, Hagler crushed him ... Twice!
This was basically a fight for the second best Middleweight in the world. And the winner of this fight earned the chance to to lose to HAGLER.
This is one of the best comments l have read about this bout. They were fighting to determine who was the second best middleweight on the Planet.

Scored it 95/95,good fight, RIP Alan
AM won this yeah
Hot good fight
Thank You Great Fight. Mustafa Hamsho the Toughest Fighter of my Lifetime.
So he was tougher than Hagler?
. Never could have taken punishment Hamsho did.Absolutely Haggler more skilled
@@kevinmahon7848 Hagler noted not just for skill but for having the hardest ever chin.
Because of skill never took multiple shots like
Hamsho

Thanks Coach, another good one.

Thanks coachstrout !!! This war
A very close tough fight but i feel Minter just nicked it

Both was good, but they was never going to be good enough whilst Hagler was in the room
Just re- watched this and I scored it Hamsho 97-95 Minter 🥊
HAMSHO WAS A BEAST. IF HE COULD PUNCH HE WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT CHAMP. HE WAS LIKE A SOUTHPAW VERSION OF VITO ANTOUFERMO. 🥊🥊🥊
Oh if not for Hagler he would've been a title holder he was that crude but tough kind of foe!
Hagler was too good for them both , I believe he made hamburger out of Hamsho's face in their second meeting
Unfortunately they were both around at the same time as on of the greatest middleweights that ever lived the marvellous one
Never liked Hamsho style of boxing. No bias but minter hands down for me
Well just re watched this for the first time since watching it back in the day.Scored it 96-95 Minster. Certainly could of gone either way though.
Something to imagine: Hamsho vs Hatton. I wouldn't want to ref that mauling contest.
Hamsho won this one. but I have got to say, Minter put up a good fight. thank goodness for youtube
Rest in peace Boom boom.
This fight could have been a draw easy it was that close
Ya know think Minter scored enough on Hamsho to win
Imagine Hagler knocked Hamso out . What he would have done to Minter if the fight progressed further.
This was a very close fight. I may have given it to Minter, but it was tough to score.
Rip Alan.
WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE HIM FIGHT VITO
Guna miss ya b00m b00m...
Where was the pull back counter left? man
💪
Hamsho was not fast or accurate but he was aggressive. Minter did a lot of holding although Hamsho held too.
I don't blame Minter for holding cuz Hamsho was very dirty
Given that the winner would fight Hagler for the title it's as well Minter lost as he'd have fared little better than the first time he fought Hagler. Spirited fight though.
Minter moving to his right?

Commentator only talks about Minters punches.
That's because Hansho is trying to head butt and fight dirty
At least the right man won. Hamso gave Minter a good beating. All throughout the fight Minter was just holding on to survive.
"In 10 seconds...It'll end..." THANK CHRIST!
Minter robbed. Rest in peace you British legend.
Tough call. It may have been a draw.
Fight could have been held as a draw and if this fight would have been in England then maybe Minter might have stolen it buy a tight margin.
Minter always looked like he had short arms.

Never liked neither of these fighters, glad Hagler destroyed oth
thought minter retired after hagler beating, ?guess i was wrong
Sibson retired minter
Hamsho
Minter
Minters left hand never carried enough power .
Nice right jab though.. He seemed very spiteful with his shots
@Gary Fletcher it was a solid shot caught Hagler square on. Hagler blinked and came again
@Gary Fletcher i agree Leonard beat him , lots would disagree . Leonard clearly out landed Hagler
@Steve
I'm not sure of that. Did you see Minter's KO over Ray Seales?
@@andrewanderson8551 I haven't to be fair. Must have been well timed , Minter was hurtfull for sure , always felt he lacked a big bomb in his back hand. He was and remains a big hero of mine
Hamsho did not win this !
ALAN MINTER SOLD HIS FIGHT. FAKE BOUT. ONE MORE BOXISTIC FRAUD.
nonsense.
Hamsho beat him up. I don’t know what fight jerry roth was watching.
