I am an advocate of the physical media on my channel and am a collector myself, mainly cd, but also vinyl. Having an actual record makes the whole experience of music so much greater! It gives a much stronger connection to the musicians, than streaming. And of course the artwork 😊

A lot of people here will likely look at me sideways, but I don't want to ever come back to vinyl. I'm from the generation when vinyl was pretty much the only format (along with audio tape) and, as soon as I managed to move away from it, I did so - first to CD, then mostly to digital files.
Vinyl for me was very frustrating: I never had a quality record player and I was half clumsy, half careless with my record, which means they got damaged very quickly. Plus, they took a lot of space and required quite a bit of handling (which did not improve the damaged state). As for sound quality, I never heard the difference. The only thing I regret is the artwork size.

One thing I love about record collecting is something Vaughn Oliver (Artist for 4AD who did cover art for many of their bands) stated. He said it's like having a little art gallery and hearing that small comment blew my mind somewhat. I love just looking at the artwork and being encapsulated by a singular photo and too have multiple of them in my room to just stare at in amazing!

Collect physical media period. Streaming and paid services are not the answer.

I set up at a record show a couple times a year and I always buy a few records while I'm there. This past Sunday I found a record I have been looking for since the 90's...Alex Harvey The Mafia Stole My Guitar, a beautiful mint copy for $9 What a rush! My sister said why didn't you just buy it online....I could have but like you said I have always enjoyed the hunt and finding records in the wild. Great video!

Interesting you mentioned HMV. All the chain record shops in the US are gone now. I'm still a CD fan-- love the artwork (tri-folds & digibooks are the coolest), the "airy" digital sound, the remixes, the surround sound & the prices. Last LP I bought was King Gizzard on red vinyl. Last CD was Travis *The Invisible Band* reissue.

Excellent video. I will collect cds and vinyl until my dying day. Recent vinyl acquisitions: a limited, numbered edition of Abecedarians, The Other Side of the Fence on gold translucent vinyl. (500 copies) And two others in which I LOVE the covers and the music therein. King Crimson Lizard, and Guided by Voices Zeppelin Over China. Cheers.

My personal record collecting story started when I was around 13? (Possibly younger, Not sure)
I have been a life long music fan, really passionate about bands and artists like Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Marillion, Alice Cooper, etc.
One day whilst out in my city centre with my parents, we visited a charity shop. I looked in the vinyl section and found a copy of Pink Floyd's The Wall and a 12" of the Punch and Judy Marillion single. I didn't even have a record player but I was sold there and then, opening up the gatefold on the pressing of The Wall that I got (Recently found out it was a UK First press), and the rest is history!
I asked for a record player for my birthday that same year and I was off!
Nothing beats the feeling of listening to a new release, deciding to get a vinyl copy of it, then heading to your local vinyl/music store, getting a copy, taking it home, opening up the gatefold (if there is one) then putting on the first disc (if its a double which most seem to be these days) then just taking it all in first hand.
I often find that I fall even harder in love with the albums that I own on vinyl, for example. I bought the Dance album by Gary Numan. was brought up on his music but always overlooked that album. Beggars Banquet issued a beautiful purple re-issue back in 2017, I bought it and now its one of my favourite albums of his. Don't know why but it happens a-lot!
Also I love going to record fairs and picking up some proper steals from them!, one of the most memorable moments on my vinyl journey is when me and my dad went to my favourite vinyl shop, he was looking through the racks then suddenly proceeded to get really excited, he then held a copy of Magic by Gillan and said that I would adore this album. So I bought it and listened to it and he was right! so whenever I listen to the album it always takes me back to that day which is precious to me.

As a record collector, I agree with everything you've stated here. A recent purchase: Alice Cooper Welcome to My Nightmare 45 RPM pressed, 180 gram remixed vinyl from earlier this year. It's fantastic!

Would love to see your review of Geddy’s book, of course. Haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but it’s definitely on my list and I’d be interested in your take.

YES PLEASE DO A BOOK REVIEW. Got a copy when I saw him talk about his effin' life at Massey Hall in Toronto last December. (It's a page turner!)
What I bought recently: Lou Reed The Blue Mask with a poster!
Still buying cd's but streaming is only convenient.
    Good video.

I used to love going to London, going to Virgin Records, Tower Records (I met Kylie Minogue there), Rough Trade Records, HMV and all the other small record places selling used records. Good Times. Virgin Records and Tower Records in London are no more.
And, living in Reading at the time, Reading Festival (Nirvana was great) have a huge place for selling used records.
But yes, I used to be a Vinyl collector, got up to near 1000, and sold them long time ago.

I got back into vinyl last year, after an absence of 35 years. Best decision I made. Pre-ordered Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies (50th anniversary edition). Looks a beauty.

Hi Niamh - Speaking of Remain In Light , listen to the last track on it " The Overload " & then the last track on Unknown Pleasures " I Remember Nothing " & note the similarities. Joy Division ➗️ track came first. Have a great night !

I hear what you say and understand, but to me it’s what hits my ear it doesn’t matter what colour the disc is or weather it’s a picture disc. CD is so compact I take some of my CD’s away at weekends I can’t take a box of vinyl with me I take about 15 CD’s with me. Sound I’m really not sure can vinyl ever play without hearing that noise? Price!!!! Alice Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies on vinyl is £80+ the CD is £19.99 I actually paid £17.49! ⚡️

Avant Garde Blackgaze band Alcest just released their new single "L'Envol" it is a beautiful song
(a good place to start if your getting into this band)...
Dont know if your in2 Avant Garde Metal (Art Metal/Beyond Prog)
guess is u sort of are because System Of A Down is Avant Garde Metal (a bit more accessible than some/great band)
also the love 4 the Killer band Gojira...
but theres also 3 more new releases that all Amazingly Unique
2/23 (Avant Garde Metal)... Sleepytime Gorilla Museum "Of the Last Human Being"
2/23 (Avant Garde Black Metal)... Borknagar - "Fall"
2/16 (Avant Garde Black Metal) ... Ihsahn - "Ihsahn"
If your in2 Vocals all these always have great melodies (cleans/etc)
The Composition & Orchestration is also brilliant on these albums
Might be instant on first listen (like me) but if u replay im sure u will dig 'em
Have u checked out Godzilla's (Gojira) Possessed Demo (1997) on UA-cam its when they were a Death Metal Band b4 they went Avant Death Metal (its surprisingly good)
Alice Cooper also has a great Avant Garde Psychedelic album on Frank Zappa' label "Pretties For You" 1969
Frank Zappa - One Size Fits All (1975) Avant Prog
And don't know if your interested in Psychedelic Avant Garde Funk/Heavy Rock (Funkadelic - Hardcore Jolies) 1976
Fiona Apple (When The Pawn - 1999/Fetch The Bolt Cutters - 2020) Avant Hard Rock/Pop
Joni Mitchell - Don Juan' Reckless Daughter (1977) Avant Folk/Jazz Fusion
and the list goes on & on (Bjork)... leaving Avant Garde Classical & Jazz for another day

Alcest are truly amazing. I have a limited edition vinyl of Spiritual Instinct and it's just a pleasure. And so are the previous ones

    • @kingIgor

Alcest never released a album less than brilliant but Spiritual Instinct is my favorite so far...
but the new one (Les Chants De L'Aurore, due June 21) might change that like Spiritual Instinct did Kodama
