Thank you! The trick to use the fluid pressure to push out the seals worked perfectly.
OK here’s a tip. When you’re ready put it back together lube up the first seal line it up in the hole put the washer on it and use a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe to drive it down till it stops on the bearing then put the sea clip in the whole use the PVC to drive it down until it clicks, lube up the Dust seal line it up and use PVC one more time done.
Yes, I actually used a pvc pipe to set mine as well after i got tired of messing with it i went looking for something better and found it in a bag of plumbing stuff when i installed my new tub/shower. Thanks for reminding me.

I fought with mine last night for an hour. If I didnt put grease on the pullers screw, it would have wasted the it. I cranked it in so hard to where the tangs were bending. I let it sit like that for 20 minutes. Nothing. I'll try it again.
I admire your persistence.

I was doing a front-end rebuild on my F-150, and one day it just decided to urinate all the power steering fluid all over my driveway while I had it up on jackstands. This is so helpful, especially the tip about using the pump to blow out the old seal! I was worried I'd have to drop the whole steering gearbox, and since this was my first time doing a front end kit, I was worried I was getting in way over my head. Thank you for this video!!

This is the only video I could find that goes in depth thank you, we had a leak and I thought it was the pump so I replaced it then the hoses and today I was making the bumper straight and noticed the gear box leaking fluid I wish I had thought of it first

The new pump may have caused the seal leak. That's what happened to me. New pump more pressure, 22 yr old seals leak.

Just did mine this passed weekend. 1997 Silverado 2WD
Jay, next time you are trying to blow out the old seals when you turn the wheel stop to stop, rev the engine when it is at the stops. That increases the pressure from the pump and they will definitely blow out. I have had them leaking like a sieve and they still blow out.

When I pulled my pitman arm off, I put the puller on it and tightened it all I could, then got a solid steel bar and a big hammer, went up top, rested the bar on the pitman arm and gave it a couple solid smacks with the hammer and it popped right off.
Scratch a mark so it goes on in place

You only need to turn the wheel one direction to blow out the seal. The trick is to raise the engine RPM to increase pump pressure. Then when you turn the wheel and get near the stop, turn quick and hard. This will provide max pressure before the releif valve in the P/S pump opens to reduce pressure.
I used a picture pipe to push new seals in

This video is great. I have a 1975 Impala with a really bad seal leak and was wondering if this work can be performed without pulling the gear box. Obviously a diff vehicle but the procedure is pretty much the same. I just happened to come across this video as I was skimming through UA-cam. Thank you!

It's like 3 bolts and 2 hoses and they're easy to get to. Pull that bad boy off. And make it a bench job guarantee you will save time. The blow out method is cool.but any time you save is negated by fighting dust cover and clip.
I just did this on a Jeep and they have the snap ring first and then the washers and seals. Two things I found. Heat up the pitman arm with a torch and the puller then pulls it off much easier. Secondly, the easiest way to get to the seals is simply to make sure the steering is centered and then undo the four bolts on the top of the steering box and you can pull the shaft straight up and you can use a screwdriver and pop out the seals. Also allows you to clean up the inside of the tube where the seals go. Just add some grease to the inside of the seals and then lower the shaft back down and you are done except for the pitman arm torque of 185 ft lbs...ugh!!
Heating pitman arm can lead to damage to said thing he’s replacing currently I just made this mistake leaks fluid now

This is a hilarious video to me at first I thought you wasn't going to complete the job but a shock mean I enjoyed the time as well. The shop charge me $100 just for a diagnostic to find a leak. Then said they would charge $1,600 to change. Yeah Right not out of my pockets😂 I will be doing this job myself and get my nephew's to help me Thanks for the help my leak is coming from the same location I have a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L automatic 4 x 4

Spraying a bit of penetrating oil and a few well placed blows with a ball peen or heavier will loosen that pit man arm..kind of like loosening a ball joint
I thought I dodged a bullet by just swapping out my leaking gearbox for one that was on a truck that I retired. It worked fine for a while, but it looks like I may have to replace the seal on this one as well. I have one question for you... How is the seal holding up for you now that it has been nearly a year since you installed it?
I ordered online aftermarket seals for my hydroboost that failed miserably. I don't put that much stock into reviews since there are so many fake ones out there. However, had I read the reviews on that product, I would have been warned. After reviewing the reviews of the seal kit that you installed, the main issue seems to be bad instructions.

Man, by the time you got this thing fixed you could have installed a new unit and been money ahead considering the cost of the unit and your time and effort and the whole unit would be new not just the seals. I was going to replace my seals but after watching this I’m going with a whole new unit. Thanks!

For less than $200 it may be better to replace steering box with a rebuilt one
No way, the aftermarket steering boxes suck. Hundreds of dollars and they still have tons of slop.
This was much cheaper and works great now.

once you have pressure on the puller take a small sledge and pound on the end of puller it should break free

@@RJsGarages I have that same puller and I can remember it spreading and slipping off of my idler arm. I’m thinking it will be worse getting the pitman arm off. Mine is a 2001
Ford f 150. It’s 600 to install a new box. No one will just replace the seal. I even bought the new seal kit. Bahhhhh I hate to spend 600 on something I could most likely do myself. But it’s hot as hell out and I foresee frustration, some blood and about 4 hours of my Sunday gone

You are correct. It is fitted last to the shaft. 1. oilseal 2. metal washer or Teflon washer 3. snap ring 4. dust seal. regards

What makes that go bad I just bought this f****** $1,100 redhead steering box a couple months ago.
Unfortunately the redheads are not what they used to be.
I just rebuild much cheaper and works fine-ish.
Unfortunately these old Doges have a horrible front end, so all of the steering parts go out more then they should.
I would look into getting a steering box brace for it, if/when you can.

When you have the puller on the pitman arm hit it with a 3 lb sledge , this breaks it loose!!!
I replaced the same seals in a leaking Chevy steering box. To me the lower seal seems upside down. The problem with these steering boxes is that they LEAK. Is this because the lower seal is upside down? Did it get manufactured backwards and everyone is just following along? I installed mine the other direction.

What puller did you use? The one i got from AutoZone started to bend and i believe that was the thickest one they had

I used that O'Reilly's puller... It did not handle. So i went to AutoZone and got the heavy duty puller its 80 bux, but at the end of the day you get it back👍
What type of puller did you use?

What size is the pitman arm bolt
Are Jay I cannot get the steel washer to go pass the snap ring slot I put the seal with plastic in first like you did but I used a screwdriver and tried hammering the ring in but it will not go pass the snap ring seal. A 32 mm socket bottoms out at the end of the pitman arm so I cannot use it. Need some advice if you have any thanks
Do you have anything lying around that is just the right amount of round to put under the 32mm socket to give it an extra inch of reach?
Also do you have someone who could barely move the steering wheel back and forth, it might help it slide in a little.

With pitman arms i start out with heat and a hammer.then things get ugly.
Complete Ameteur ...So funny to watch .. but Gets the Job DONE .. Keeps Saying Weird on the Correct Configuration of the Seals, Snap rings and washers 24:24---- 31:50 says other people made mistake when it was correct ... says 90 % sure snap ring in working when its correct. also Has Leaves in his Oil pan, debris, Crappy tool to take out snap ring .... THE Last Seal is the Dust seal to PROTECT THE C- CLIP which is the KEY Component .. to HOLDING the Seals UNDER PRESSURE.. 1 .25 PVC Pipe will push Seals with washer in 1.25 inches = 31. 3

I saw a number of things that he could have done to make it go quicker and easier, but kudos to him for TRYING! He's picked up a LOT of information, through research and what-not, and he took the time to do the repair himself. I'm sure he learned quite a bit by doing so. The world would be a better place if more people put forth a little effort, and was willing to use a little elbow grease. Hence the reason he made the video.
