The only meaning of placing nuclear weapons in space is to deliver a nuclear strike that cannot be reflected and makes sense only in the case of the “first disarming strike” doctrine. Of the three countries dominant in nuclear weapons (Russia, China and the United States), only the United States professes this doctrine. The doctrine of the use of nuclear weapons is not something that can be changed with the stroke of a pen in a couple of minutes; it takes decades to change the doctrine. Ballistic missiles of the United States and Russia are fundamentally different from each other precisely because they profess different doctrines of use and changes in the doctrine will require changes in the missiles themselves. All Russian nuclear weapons were created with the condition that they would be used either as a retaliatory strike or as a counter strike. Russian missiles do not have sufficient accuracy to destroy enemy launch silos with missiles inside; they are initially designed to retaliate against enemy military bases and cities. At the time of their launch, the enemy’s launch silos will already be empty. Their low accuracy is not due to a technology defect, but to the earliest possible divergence of warheads from the launch vehicle after entering impact orbit. This is necessary to overcome the enemy’s layered missile defense in conditions when a significant part of your nuclear arsenal was destroyed on the ground by the enemy’s first strike. Warheads on US missiles are separated as late as possible, which ensures, on the one hand, maximum accuracy, and on the other hand, makes them maximally vulnerable to anti-missile defenses.
By the way, theoretically, nuclear weapons located in space can be very effective for launching a “primary disarming strike” against an enemy who is unaware of the attack, leaving him with a few seconds to use missile defense systems and a few minutes to make a decision in a retaliatory strike. When attempting to use orbital nuclear weapons in a retaliatory strike, a country starting a global nuclear conflict can relatively easily destroy satellites with nuclear weapons in the first minutes of the conflict because they cannot be hidden (unlike submarines in the depths of the ocean). All orbital objects are cataloged and tracked, and it is not difficult for specialists to identify which satellite is carrying nuclear weapons.
