Royal Enfield Bullet extra engine breather option discussed.

  • In this video I discuss an extra breather and its location, which I sometimes add and use on Bullet engines, whether tuned or not. Once the hole is drilled you have a choice of whether to use this extra breather or not, but it provides another option and helps to equalize any internal pressures, if present.

    Very interesting Paul, I'd say that engine is an Electra engine, I used to have a 500 Electra X here in Australia, it had the same stupid idea of breathing over the top of oil chamber. My bullet was a 06 straight after the bullet 65 and still had the casting at the base of the barrel left hand side. So I drilled the casting out like the old iron barrel and vented straight to the chain and never looked back what an improvement, so every chance I got to help a friend or someone else this is what I did. But the secret is to chemi weld the breather hole to the oil chamber. Cheers Paul keep up the good work mate.

    I think Royal Enfield got it right eventually with the last 350 Bullets built in 2007 , I’ve got one , and it doesn’t leak oil , the catch tank has very little in it if any , the oil rarely needs topping up either. Ok , the bike has only done 18,000 K since going on the road new in 2008 , but now runs on an Amal carb , and Boyer ignition, and is very reliable . A good basic design, but the 4 speed gearbox could be better !
    You’re doing a great job Paul …cheers, DaveH. Lancs UK .

    You run the risk of turning the engine into a giant compressor. When I drilled and fitted a breather spigot to the crankcase of my 350 bullet (in the standard bottom left of the barrel position) which has that oil tank type breather, I actually measured the gas flow rates. The original oiltank breather alone and the new breather alone flowed a roughly equal volume of gas at a fast idle (around 1.75l/min). However, if I left the oil tank breather open and had the non-return valve on the new crankcase breather, it drew air in through the oil tank on the up strokes and blew it out of both on the downstrokes. I measured 10 l/min of gas out of the crankcase breather at the same fast idle if I left the oil tank breather open! Now gas and fluid dynamics are a funny thing but I'm concerned that mod may do something similar and draw air in through the rocker cover and your new breather bolt then blow it back out through the oil tank breather (taking oil mist with it). Be interesting to check once it's built up, it's surprisingly easy to measure. Video of that test is on my channel titled "Enfield bullet 350 breather modification".

      Don't you have a non-return valve in the new breather pipe?

      I put them in the main breather outlet on those which have them coming directly from the left side of the crankcase, but this is more about easing and balancing any internal pressures from all areas of the engine, with a small outlet from a rocker cover, with the main breather taking care of most of the breathing. The modification I discuss here is very good for reducing condensation in these engines, too.

    • @twostroke350
      @twostroke350 Рік тому +1

      @@paulhenshaw4514 Interestingly on the condensation front. I had awful mayonaise problems with that engine, it was constantly blocking the breather hose with thick gloop to the point it had to be blown through before each days ride or it would block and start leaking oil out of everywhere. Even on a long summer tour where i averaged 150 miles/day for 3 months. It totally stopped when I fitted one of the HM scavenge pressure bypass valves. I have absolutely no idea why.

      Those are found on late Indian crankcases, where the lower one is the oil return and the higher one is a vent.
