- The growth of professional soccer in San Diego was revealed Thursday morning when Major League Soccer announced during a news conference at Snapdragon Stadium that an MLS team will be coming to the city.
San Diego’s MLS club will be owned by Mohamed Mansour, a distinguished entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist with deep, global ties in the sport, and by the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. The Sycuan Tribe becomes the first Native American tribe to have an ownership stake in professional soccer in the United States.

I bet in 2030 the the MLS will contain 40 teams, 20 western and 20 eastern. Would be cool. I saw that A-League from AUS-NZ wil increase the league next year from 12 to 14. So nice. greets from Europe.
Definitely going to be at least 32 before 2030 because las vegas will not wait when they find the right owner and Phoenix in Arizona was on some people’s shortlists. Others can be Tampa, Sacramento, New Orleans, and after the 2026 World Cup there should be a real desire for local teams
Definitely not 40. They’d have to add 10 teams in 5 years. Since San Diego doesn’t even come until 2025. Also 30-32 is the optimal amount of teams for an American league

This is the best name given the ownership and it also works for all the people proud of San Diego. But I doubt they have the balls to go with the name. Given that other owner wants to build a brand he can sell around the world.

Congrats to San Diego, an city that always deserved an MLS team since they lost the Chargers 7 years later and always since 1996! Now the dream is reality.
Just hope cities like Phoenix, NOLA, or Sac can get a team for the west (i don't know if New Orleans is west or east), I don't want Vegas to get one (that team is not happening).
And for the east for me could be Indianapolis, Detroit, Pittsburgh, or Milwaukee. I don't want Tampa (cuz for me Tampa team is Orlando).
Now San Diego would have a rivalry with LAFC and LAG.

Where's the stadium? They need to build a soccer specific stadium in order to get a team. Wouldn't want to see them playing in either the Cardinal's stadium (too big) or the D'Backs ballpark (too awkward). At least San Diego already had a stadium ready before the announcement was made.
So much for needing soccer-specific stadiums ...
