    The fans, the city, and the county, made it clear that the downtown proposal was a non-starter. The chargers insisted on putting in on the ballot because it was designed to fail as an excuse to move the team. If they had made a serious push to redevelope the mission valley site they would be playing in SD today.

    • @SDPosse619
      @SDPosse619 Рік тому

      The downtown proposal was such a stupid idea. San Diego offered the Chargers a $1 dollar LEASE of mission valley land. One fucking dollar each year for 99 years… imagine having a stadium there and owning the surrounding area for bars, hotels, shops, and parking lots.. what a fucking idiot Dean Spanos is.

    • @zeric_
      @zeric_ Рік тому +8

      This is absolutely incorrect. Mayor Faulconer, rushed an initiative to put the Stadium in Mission Valley last minute. He put together a 1 year Environmental Impact Report which was unheard of at the time. Mayor Faulconer wanted housing in the east village, not a stadium and had ties to the group who wanted the same area the Chargers stadium wanted developed. He also supported Soccer City in Mission Valley (after the Chargers left) over the SDSU stadium plan.
      The Chargers left because, after nearly 20 years of asking for a stadium, there was finally a real threat coming into the SoCal market- The Rams, followed by the Raiders. The Chargers downtown stadium was not designed to fail, there was another ballot option that also wanted a mixed use stadium. The only problem that year was there were too many options to choose from when it came to the stadium. Two downtown proposals and the Mission valley proposal.
      The mayor effectively split the vote by sabotaging the team and putting it on the ballot. SD sports fans did not want to give up tailgating for a downtown stadium that would have taken that way so they opted for the Mission Valley site. The Chargers needed 65% approval for downtown and had 45% in total. The other two sites had (DT 5%, Mission Vally 20%).
      If the mayor didn't split the vote, the Chargers I believe get all the votes they needed to stay and remain competitive.
      Mission Valley would not have increased the Charger's value in the same way that Downtown would have.

    Spanos was/is the problem, terrible owner (though I can't really blame him, it is a business after all)! The cities close proximity to Mexico makes San Diego a baseball town, not a football town. I lived there from 1969 to 1987; fans were great - when they were winning. The bill that got defeated was designed to fail. This says it all - Ballot Measure C received only 43 percent support from San Diego County voters. (It needed at least 66.7 percent to pass) The stadium proposals were competing with a lot of misinformation from the local chamber of commerce in spite of their supposed support claiming the stadiums would divert too much revenue from the current convention center (a controversial Endeavour on its own only opened in 1989) and would cause a substantial decline in tourist revenue to the city (like I’m not going to visit the zoo cause of extra 1% tax). Attaching taxes to the tourist industry was really genius but was promoted as somehow devastating to the local hotel/tourist business which was a load of hooey. In the end, these stadiums, as fan-tastic as they are, rarely if ever pay for themselves and the supposed monetary benefit to cites is almost never realized in real terms. As a liflong Bolts fan I hated to see them go but I seriously doubt the chargers EVER return to San Diego - it’s all about the money!

Bottom line there’s no way the citizens of San Diego were going to extend tax dollars to the Spanos family. We have an enormous, homelessness and infrastructure problem, and that’s where the money should go. I would love to have an NFL franchise in the city for a variety of reasons. Funny thing about that is, the last 3 San Diego proposals failed by people taking a shit on the Chargers but then when it was announced the Chargers were moving to LA, fans hit the streets with their Chargers stuff and burned it while being mad they were leaving. Well, same fate is gonna happen in Phoenix with the Coyotes. Their proposals failed too by people where I live shitting on them and when they announce they gonna move, people are gonna burn their Coyotes stuff in the streets. What gets me the most is I know what will happen after the Coyotes relocate. People are gonna be crying for a second chance at an NHL team. It might take 10, 20 or even 30 years but who knows. Just to show people shouldn't shit on the team they are fans of. Yes-but it will probably be conditional that one of the San Diego Metro communities and county contribute at least a tiny bit of public money to build a stadium.
      The reality is that unless a city is New York, LA, or Miami, almost no owner or league is going to built a stadium with 100% private funds (case in point, the Bay Area contributed public funds for the 49ers and even the Bears want some form of public funds in Chicago). When a city realizes that, they don't lose teams. Good news is recent teams have reached out to San Diego whenever they've had discussions to build stadiums. The government there should make sure they take future opportunities completely seriously and put everything they can behind it to make it work.
