can Synthwave breath some new live into the left-behind?
    This is a cover of
    • Lameguy's Adlib/OPL3 M...
This tune was composed on a OPL3 compatible ESS Audio drive with ADT2. no idea if it's 688 with OPL3 clone or 1688+with ESFM.
Guessing from the feedback behaviour in the video, it's ESFM, but I can't be sure, as 486era computers uses both cards at large quantities.
Was shipped with old versions of AdLib Tracker II in .\DEMO, but somehow in the latest version, it's lost.
    Forgotten, if you may.
It'd be nice to see how it'd perform with OPM and VERA.
Sure, it's a tiny bit rough, but I'm sure that I've stared way worse.
There's some inherent problem from OPL3 like weak drums if no macro used.
Yet, no deal-breaker, everything is fine.
Once I've done familiarizing the tune, a list of could-do-betters emerges naturally. Only need to put down what's playing inside.
Although, I do believe the use of 3rds, Penta scale is a stylistic choice of oriental music.
The instruments used on OPL for the bells sounds would not work with OPM as it's using Even cycle sine and Pulse sine waveforms from OPL2, close approximation is not good enough either at higher octave.
Hence the drastically different patch is used for higher octave, the approximation is left on FM4,5.
Drums sounds a bit weak on OPL. Not an issue on OPM and/or OPN as the LFO drum produces marginally convincing Bassdrums and Snares.
with a cleaner drum, now the 16beats grove really shouts EDM-alike to me.
Consequently, when writing the Basslines, to overcome the saturated low-end competing the Drums and tiering to listen to, 'sidechain' emulation with volume command was used which added rhythmic interest as a bonus.
...don't ask about the uplifter... they just happened.
The lead is inspired from TV series BBC 2022 The responder, with its distinctive detuning which sounds close enough to the original tune and fun.
Some of the notes sounds exact vs. t' OST.
To make the bell sounds more dynamic, less repetitive, it's partially removed in verse2, yet leaving somepart there to insinuate that it's still there.
Velocity control in chorus to make room for melody as it's the focus.
    Now it's really EDM-y.... unintentionally....
As there's a gap on the oct3-4 (A-4=440Hz) range in both verse2 and chorus, some quiet arp is added to help with the stoytelling of the tune, and make the spectrum full as a rule of thumb as EDM do...
Detune left right channel for stereo chorus effect, tho it's mainly to fight the unlockable phase of PSG.
    Hope you enjoy it!

Feels like one of those soundcard bangers out of the mid-90s. Back when that stuff was composed on tracker software. Well done!

This theme doesn't give me cave vibes. Instead, it feels like a grand castle hallway adorned with artwork, filled with furnature and suits of armor trying to kill you...

Also it is very refreshing seeing someone "new" to the chip scene. Not that I follow the scene very closely but I checked your channel and I can see you grinding at your craft. Thank you very much for your hard work!

I don't know what's happening to FM6 and 7, but I've never seen an oscilloscope do this when it can still find a rising edge trigger to follow.

Well,. I'll tell you what it is. I got the time window turn all the way up, to see the drums BD and SD more as you'd expect on audacity. Saw it once at sometime ago.

@@wheatenclient3623 I don't really know what BD and SD mean (my oscilloscope usage comes from an electronics background, not audio) but I assume turning the time window up means that it shows a longer period of time?

@@TatharNuar That's right... tho that should be called 'time window' or sampling window or view window with settings like 20ms 10us 2s on digital scopes.
