- Finland has officially become the newest member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The country applied to become part of the NATO alliance following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. CBS News foreign correspondent Ian Lee discusses with Anne-Marie Green and Vlad Duthiers.

Findland stopped the Soviet Union once before and Putin seems bent on turning the Russian Federation back into the Soviet Union with him as the new Stalin. Go Finland.
My concern is that Putin is willing to take it to the nuclear level in order to obtain his goals. I've heard that Putin has cancer and is dying. I don't know how true that is. If that's true Putin will use nukes against other countries rather soon I would think he would anyway. That way in his mind he'll be the greatest leader in Communist Russia's history. Even surpassing his idol Stalin. Remember Stalin killed millions of his own people. Putin will give up millions of Russian lives by going nuclear. Just my thoughts.

@@papawheelie5576 If the Russian regime is volatile enough that sovereign countries choosing their own diplomatic pursuits is enough to set it off, maybe that’s a sign that more countries need to seek out security guarantees against Russia. Russia has no right to choose Finland’s future; that’s up to the Finnish people. That should definitely not be considered provocation. Maybe if one doesn’t invade their neighbors, other neighbors won’t be tempted to join NATO.

This is not the time for foolishness. Everyone should fear Russia. In 1940 Finland lost 11% of it's land in the Winter war (which actually you should try to get back). Russia attacks all it's neighbors. NATO needs Finland, & Finland needs NATO. Together we can all defeat Russia.

Hopefully Sweden's NATO membership application could be finalized either sometime this year or next year.
Remember that for a few years, Greece did block Macedonia's memerbship into NATO and the EU, with Greece only allowing/ratifying Macedonia to join NATO in 2020, after Macedonia agreed to change their name to 'North Macedonia'.
Hopefully once Turkey and Sweden settle their disagreememnt on Sweden's support for Kurdish groups (or at least come to some kind of compromise), Turkey would ratify Sweden's membership.
Until then, NATO (specifically the US, UK and other Nordic countries) should provide some security guarentees for Sweden whilst their application is still ongoing.

I’m pro-Kurd and pro-Armenian, but I can see how from their point of view, Turkey has reason to gripe about Sweden. I don’t think the issues are insurmountable, and who knows? It could even lead to some sort of diplomatic breakthrough wrt to a Kurdish homeland.

While Finland's accession to NATO is undeniably a boon to both parties of the new agreement, isn't an extended Land Border between Russia and the collective NATO states kinda a bad thing for the Border Security of both factions; owing to there being that much more border for both to secure?

You took the exact words out of my mouth. It is almost a checkmate. Except for around 6,000 nuclear warheads it would be. My fear is he'll use that last move. He said he would. I fear he may and I've no reason to doubt he'll follow through. Now...we wait and see if Putin will accept defeat or will he decide to risk all of our lives.
