I feel like a lot of people who haven't had a legitimate struggle lack so much empathy. I've seen so many people talk down about songs that talk about mental illness as if it's "normalizing" it in a bad way. It's so great seeing all the positive feedback on this song and for Ren.
A lot of people reacting call this multiple personality disorder but its literally just something that tons of people deal with. Our inner, doubting, self-harming monologue.

The thing is that in rens case hes actually is portraying that somewhat. Ren has dealt with psychosis most of his life like he mentioned and it manifested in literally having a second voice in his head. He doesnt have the dpd but he does have the multiple voices

Hi Rob. Loved your reaction to Ren! I needed to correct you on one point please? I have Schizophrenia. Ren's, HI Ren, came to me while I was in a very dark place and changed my entire existence. Powerful message! What you said at the beginning of your reaction suggested that Ren had multiple personalities. Schizophrenia you said. This is a common misperception. Multiple Personality Disorder is labeled with the diagnosis of Disassociative Identity Disorder (DID). Schizophrenia does not split personalities. I hear many voices all around me all day that others do not hear but I only have one voice inside my head that I do battle and that voice is all mine. Me and me alone. The voices Schizo's hear are external. Mine are usually outside the window of my room or just around the corner where I can not see them. They are hateful and mean. They are not parts of my personality. Simply hallucinations. I tell you this to educate. In my community of Schizophrenic friends, well we take offense at being called Sybil or DID. I know you meant no disrespect. I've explained this to my peers. We all love Ren as you do. Your channel I have now watched and you are a genuine kind person. Hope none of my family struck out at you. It's just a misunderstanding. So now you know. I've asked my family of schizo to like and sub you friend. Peace!!
If you check in the comments for the video, there's a large comment by Ren himself explaining he has had psychosis and a voice in his head from the age of 9. Such an incredible talent and an amazing artist. This track crosses from music to poetry to performance art.

Ever since I found this video, I've been either watching it myself, or looking out for others reacting to it - and I was so happy to see it pop up on your channel. Some people can sing. Some people can rap. Some people can play the guitar. Some people can write poetry. Some people can make great visuals. Some people know how to deliver a performance. But how many people are able to do all of those things? In a single, mind-blowing creation? I still have the joy of exploring his back catalogue ahead of me, but I truly hope this track launches him to the heights he deserves. Mesmerising brilliance. So happy you found it too. "She sells seashells by the seashore" is also a reference to money game part 2 which really makes you think and is a technical animal of musicality itself thus shall be my recommendation but I'm glad you found Ren and I hope you enjoy the journey of his catalog he really is a phenomenon in the shadows of music saturation, a sanctuary from psychosis

As a musician and music lover in their 40s, I always want to hear NEW MUSIC that moves me or inspires me, I truly want to. But it gets harder as you get older. BUT THIS RIGHT HERE - this absolutely is one of the most amazing works of ART and music and inspiration and genius I've seen in years and years. Absolutely amazing.

@@user-um5cp2cs5j Thanks for the guidance - I'm taking my time with him as it is worth it and that happens to be the only vid I have watched, along with one busking vid of his - he is worth a full dive and full support. He's more than a musician, guitarist and lyricist - he is putting on a legit show. A real treasure and inspiration I can crawl out of my raised into music in the 90's (comes with some music snobbery as much as I hate that as we had it SO good in the 90s, but after some mumble rap and screaming ass metal and shit I just cannot ever do, this is a bright light of someone who took in whatever influences he had and truly made his own lane, like he is his own thing, like Wu Tang were, like Tribe were, Pink Floyd, Portishead, like Stevie Ray Vaughan was, like Radiohead were, like Nirvana....fill in all my other 90's 'trapped in my youth' examples. I appreciate the suggestion and I'm so glad I finally clicked one of his vids after seeing his name for the last year, and 'Hi Ren' no less - I mean that's stuck with me for the rest of my life and will affect my own music creation. He is one BAD dude. And yeah, the Jenny saga is just as epic. And he isn't stuck in one gimmick - he is just finding his footing and after all the work and trials, who deserves to blow up more than Ren? I'd say nobody I know.

Everytime I listen to this, I hear something new that blows my mind. That is the problem with genius...it is always accompanied by a little 'madness'. He portrays this excellently in this performance.

He is his OWN Genre...He "spits" Shakespere. I heard the voices; they gave me pills. It was decades before I realized those voices WERE part of me. The key isn't to block them out, the key is to referee. No longer a victim, I am a STUDENT. I NEED to hear both sides; and come to a balance, or, as he says, a dance. One side has no sympathy, the other no caution. "I" am in the middle. I can personally relate to many of his songs and they deeply touch me. Ren is an amazing artist; he plays multiple instruments and has great vocal ability. I am glad you have decided to check more of him. I would suggest you also listen/react to his musical collaborations with Sam Tompkins, Chinchilla, his solo street performances, as well as his street sessions as a member of "The Big Push," which really showcase his vocal and instrumental skills. I almost never comment on youtube videos but I just wanted to say thank for reacting to this song and introducing me to Ren. I just discovered it a few days ago but it has touched me so deeply. I struggle a lot with my mental health and this song and many others by Ren have been so therapeutic. Keep reacting to these emotional songs because I know for me it means alot to see that others understand mental health struggles and it's not so lonely knowing we aren't the only one going through it. I love that you always offer to talk to people who are struggling and you genuinely seem to care. We need more people like you and like Ren in the world.

@Cliff beats there is a ton of symbolism in the song and the video when you start to really look at what is going on in the video. But there is on part the "she sells sea shells by the sea shoe" line that is from another song of his called "Money game pt 2." But there is also the song called violets tale by Ren that is an emotional Roller coaster.

9:18 - Yeah, the discordant chords and dissonance is intentionally used to great effect. The flashing lights also show when it's the "darkness" talking.
I think that the line, “when I write I belong” is overlooked a lot. How beautifully put. He belongs because he contributes and is able to give himself to something. This resonates with me because I feel the same way with being a nurse.
