    Thanks Steve so much for sharing your experiment with the Red drumhead, and your growing of beet leaves. We love beet leaves, and have been harvesting them for months, and will miss them. Going to try and grow them under cover, shared with the lettuce (ours are raised beds too). Look forward to seeing how the cabbage does. The air traffic noise is not too bad, I could still hear you clearly 😊). 👍🏻

    I planted lettuce seedlings out sept. 1st seedlings this year.
    In the past climate, we only had one crop per year. fall wasn't warm enough for anything to grow. But lately, depending on the year's weather, I might have things growing up till November.

    Steve, thanks for this. Helped me so much. Going to order some of these lettuce seeds today, never grown winter lettuce and we love salads all year round. I do land cress , and corn salad etc but not head lettuce, so thankyou xx

      @@SteveRichards Just salad leaves really, but i did do Reine de Glace last year early winter and that was lovely and crispy and full of flavour but didnt do enough to last all winter, will do more this year. Ordered Grenoble Red and Brighton yesterday. Can i do Navara over winter in the greenhouse/.

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  11 місяців тому

      @dowelltracey9505 I don’t do Navara for a winter harvest, those red leaves don’t do well, they become very thin and weak and often get mildew. They do however do really well sown in October and planted out in November for a harvest in early spring : all the best - Steve

      I also make little gift packs for my mates' kids. All you need is a small pot (can be made from newspaper or toilet roll tubes), a peat pellet and a few seeds. Write them a short guide and away they go!

    Wow Steve your subscribers has grown a ton since I last visited. You deserve it that’s for sure. You’re phenomenal. I’ve not been able to spend as much time in the garden this year as home schooling now, but I’ve still got a decent amount growing. What would you prioritise for winter growing? Need to download your e book so I can reference your growing times. I’m hoping by next spring to have an allotment- been waiting 4 years!

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  11 місяців тому

      Thanks Ruth, I’d prioritise lambs lettuce and claytonia outside in September and lettuce and spinach under cover for a winter harvest. For over wintering for a spring harvest I’d go for spinach and flowering Brassicas : all the best - Steve

    I am growing the albino beats. They are doing well. Apparently you can make sugar syrup out of the juice. I have also planted wild Chicory. My goal is to make a D.I.Y. sweet Chicory "coffee".

    Great video Steve
    You mentioned the Red Cabbage you sow now & plant out February. Do you keep them as small plants I modules? And would they be living in your tunnel or greenhouse? Covered over in winter?
    Sorry for lots of questions!

      Yes, that's how I do all of my early flowering brassicas, see this video for more on red cabbage ua-cam.com/video/ireE8JFz5h8/v-deo.html and the growing guides section of my ebook for details on each type: steverichards.notion.site/Individual-growing-guides-bc279089de074c0ab0bfedc4f41d54dd?pvs=4 : All the best - Steve

    Do you have any strategies to reduce the chance of getting clubroot when you've previously had it?

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  11 місяців тому +1

      There's plenty of theories out there, for example sterilising the soil with Jey's fluid, or heavily liming the soil. I've not tried either of these, I am gently liming my soil and just changed my rotations around a bit for now, I will have to see how it develops. I'm not sure how it arrived on my plot and hence I don't know how far it's spread yet : All the best - Steve

    brilliant video Steve, thank you. I am trying all year round harvesting for the first time this year, and the in formation and advice you so kindly give, is guiding and helping me immensely. I sometimes get a bit overwhelmed with all the things I need to do, but I am hoping it will become second nature as I progress and develop skills and experience. I am keeping records which I also hope will help me in future years. I sometimes panic when a whole sowing is destroyed by slugs/snails etc. Can I resow theose crops immediately or would I have missed the window and have to abandon that crop for the season? Thank you again. Happy gardening :-)

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  11 місяців тому

      It depends on the crop that the slugs got, root veggies probably not, leafy greens probably. If you give me a list I can advise : all the best - Steve

    • @bewoodford2807
      @bewoodford2807 11 місяців тому

      . You are so kind, thank you :-) white Pak choi, but I think I can resow those after watching your video, and my outdoor lettuce and cauliflower (AYR). Makes me almost scared to plant things in the garden. All raised beds of around 18 inches and completely weed free. I caught a monstrous black slug climbing the side of my deep bed last night- it has been rehomed to the field opposite me.

    • @bewoodford2807
      @bewoodford2807 11 місяців тому

      @@SteveRichards You are seems too far damaged to regrow. I think I can sow these again. So kind, thank you Steve. So far they have eaten my pak choi, red and white. The red has regrown but the white is totally given up. I think I can sow these again after I watched your video content. The cauli (AYR) was also decimated as were the cabbage. The carrots , surprisingly, have been left, touch wood. Also the Komatsuna was totally stripped, but again I think I can also resow these. Apart from sitting up al night I| have no idea how to protect these crops. I am concerned about using pellets ( the organic ones even) as I have so much wildlife in my garden, from slow worms to little toads to the birds. My sweet peppers also have holes in, and I am sure it is birds as I have caught them flying out of my greenhouse from the pepper patch, a few times? The plants are i n pots stood on a sand propagating bench, so I don't think molluscs are to blame this time? Thank you again for all your help. Be :-)

      Cauliflower sown now won't be ready until mid-spring next year at the earliest in my experience. I think it's better to grow it on in pots and plant out under plastic in February, or fleece in March, that avoids the slugs : All the best - Steve

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  11 місяців тому +1

      The Asian greens can be re-sown. I think the organic iron Phosphate tablets are fine, if you are worried though just drape some fine mesh over your raised beds, that will keep the wildlife away from the slugs and snails. If you pull the mesh tight you might also be able to keep slugs out, that's what I've done for my Asian greens. A few pellets to kills slugs inside the net and then keep them out : All the best - Steve
