  • On March 9th, when Cryptopsy was in Rome, our vocalist Matt McGachy went to visit his friend Enrico Di Lorenzo the vocalist of Hideous Divinity and who also happens to be an Otolaryngologists (Ear + Nose & Throat doctor) to discover what truly happens when he is performing extreme vocals.
With a microscopic camera placed up his nose, Matt performed Lascivious Undivine taken from Cryptopsy's new album "As Gomorrah Burns".
Massive thanks to Enrico Di Lorenzo for taking his time to do this, Stefano Morabito for recording and mixing the vocals and to Philippe Brousseau for putting this video together.

I love that extreme vocals are actually being studied.

Matt is one of the most skilled extreme singers I had the pleasure to study.
His technique is flawless and his larynx is so relaxed and balanced...
No surprise his voice is so perfect!
    Thank you Matt 🤘

Skilled, maybe.. his screams are insane but his gutural voice is horrible.. one of the worst I've heard.

Bro, it's impressive, look at the vocal techniques and the way they do the guttural vocals, that's insane!!!!

THIS IS SO AWESOME!!! Genuinely amazing to see what happens to the throat in real time during growls, I've heard rough ideas on what happens with/without proper care, but actually seeing it happen from two people who do it for reals is a whole new story. Amazing playthrough and camerawork, big ups to the whole crew🔥🔥🔥🤘

Insanity. Matt is one of the best there is. I'd love to see Jonny Davy do one of these, too! 🤘

It's like you have a tiny mouth inside your muth singing.
I don't know anything about what is really going on but this is the most metal thing that can possibly exists.

Pro tip : "high pitched" growls are a lot easier to do than deep growls. Deep growls need a lot of air and aren't easy to sustain.

Air isn’t the only factor to consider though. Highs restrict airflow so they don’t require as much breath control, but they usually require more of the throat to contract which you can see in the video. Lows/gutturals just need a small part of the throat to be constricted and the rest of your throat acts as a resonator. They both have trade offs in terms of how difficult they are and it probably depends from person to person.

Deep growls need more air if you do it the old way. "Modern" false cords vocals have different degrees of vocal compression applied. Personally I can sustain for like ~30 secs.
