This road has been in the news quite a bit lately due to mudslides and a 'Catastrophic Failure' that led to the road completely collapsing. My grandpa and I just drove this road about a month ago and we couldn't believe the breaking news. Since this road won't be open for the foreseeable future, enjoy this video!

Do you know where 12 mile mark is on your video? That's where the road slide happened.

4:09 is the spot where the collapse happened. We drove to Driggs and spent the night and then drove to Grand Targhee and back through Victor to hwy 22 to Jackson Wyoming.

I drove Teton Pass in both directions a few years back, very beautiful yet very challenging to drive.

I just drove highway 22 two days before the collapse and video it. I took my mom on a road trip through western Wyoming.

I am a local in nearby Idaho. I’ve driven the pass many times to go to Jackson to shop/play. And pulled our 5th wheel up and over many times. Yes, the gradients are challenging. The road is used a lot!! Workers who live in Victor area use it daily to get to Jackson. The spot where the slide occurred looks like a short spot that always had a dip in the road that I noticed when driving over it. Not horrible, but there. I noticed this past year a “patch” to level that area had been put in place. I wonder if a “weakness” had been developing over time? I’m just grateful that no one was hurt when things caved in. It will be difficult for normal, daily users to sort out an alternate route for work. The convenience is gone!!

You went right past my old home in Victor, Idaho to head up the pass. I worked at St. John's Hospital in Jackson and traveled the pass even in the winter. It was a scary drive in the dark for the night shift. Thanks for the memory.

I drove this road a few years. Loved it. I love the twisting turns and the vistas. I was to drive it on June 6th 2024 but had a change of plans. When it reopens, I will do it again.

I went over the Teton Pass back in 2010, but in the opposite direction and in the middle of July... such a pretty area. That being said, the section that collapsed looks like one of those earthen dams, and with all of the wet weather that road had nowhere to go but down (at least 100 ft). The quick fix would be to refill the slide with boulders and backfill it, but the surest fix would be building a bridge around the slide, but it would take a couple of years to do it. Either way, it's going to be a hard time for the Jackson Hole region for sure.

Drove over Teton Pass kinda by accident in early May of 2023, east to west, and my 98 Toyota Camry, 175k miles on the original engine, did not like it at all, hahaha. He loves running FAST on the flats, but he does not like steep grades at all. He made it up and over without any problems, but it was slow going for a geriatric car. I pulled over at the top to let the cars behind me pass me and let Camry catch his breath (air is thinner at 8.4k feet up than the 2.1k feet he's calibrated for), then enjoyed the glide down the west side of the pass into the Swan Valley. Nice drive, but I don't think I'll subject Camry to it again. Would be fun in a snappy little sports car...

What?!? Wow Kyle! I’m subscribed to WYODOT and didn’t get a notification regarding the mudslide and collapse! Thank you for sharing this video! That is beautiful country out there! I would like to visit Jackson Hole one day! You were fortunate to travel through there when you did! Have a wonderful weekend! Mark in Iowa.

Now this to the side of Wyoming that I love to see. Rather than the Great Plains/Semi Arid parts that makes most of the state. Surprised that that was still snow at Teton Pass- in the middle of May. Which is probably why that landslide happened just recently- which has now closed the pass indefinitely. I feel for the folks there who use that road on a regular basis.
Just glad from the looks of things, no one was hurt when the landslide happened. But it shows what those who live in mountainous areas have to deal with.

I agree, you gotta get off the interstate to see the true Wyoming. Most of it is just how you explained it, however.

Bro we were both just on this road. I drove this exact route but west the morning day may 11th after your video. Kinda crazy now seeing it in the news. I turned left at state 31 there at the beginning of your video and continued on for a quick stop to see the Twin Falls, then to Winnemucca, then home to the Bay Area the following day.

I drove that exact same route back home to California as you mention. Crazy how we just missed each other! I drove back on the 12th.

Far north latitude and high elevation plays a factor there.

Can I ask what vehicle you drive? You must put a ton of miles on a car with all of the road trips! Has it been reliable, are you happy with it? Thanks for the ride-along! -Tom
