    I found that focusing on my pin caused really bad target panic. Also, if you are shooting somewhere, you have to shoot through a hole in limbs you need to focus on the target and the limbs in between. For me, with a single pin setup, I always focus on the target. I'm not sure there is a dead seat answer, but this works best for me.

    • @timbow50
      @timbow50 2 роки тому +1

      Focusing on the spot you need to hit is the thing to do. With enough good quality practice your mind will learn to execute the shot your pin floats in the right spot. As your pin floats it is generally in the same pattern over and over. If you aren't punching but actually using the release, any release, correctly, the release will fire almost at a subconscious level. Just focus on the target and pull through the shot. Your brain will learn the timing. But don't be doing a drive by type shot.Focus on the spot and hold the pin on the target as best you can ( it will be floating).

  • @timbow50
    @timbow50 2 роки тому +2

    I focus on the spot I want to hit. The single pin is floating as best I can on that spot but I don't actually ever focus on the pin. The pin will naturally-automatically move to and float at that spot. During all this I am pulling steadily on my Carter Wise Choice ( set very light tension & no trigger travel). Any conscious thought of pulling thru the shot etc happened seconds ago as I am now looking intently at the target spot. With a clarifier and 4x lens the target is very clear and the pin is clear.

    I started having this trouble in my mid-40s and I tried the verifier for a couple years (still have it on one of my bows). However, the verifier will clear up the pin but make the target more blurry so I didn’t like it. Additionally, if you ever hunt in the rain the verifier will hold a drop of water, or sometimes it will get some frost or dew on the lens and could really screw things up for you… Been there done that. I generally focus on the target but find myself going back and forth between it and the pin. Sucks to get old!

    Every time I shoot with people they always ask how do I stay steady. It’s simple I don’t. I sway just as much as them but the difference is I’m focusing where I want to hit not worrying about my pin sway.

    I Just started wearing glasses last month with a mild distance prescription.
    Today was the first I tried shooting with them and it was a no go. I have a basic metal frame rectangular glasses, and when I went to settle, I was looking through the frame at my nose bridge to see my peep.
    Any suggestions on glasses options, sizes, frame designs etc that works for people.
    Also, while we're asking about it, has anyone had issues with deer busting you from glare? My dad and a few other friends say they feel they get picked off easier.
    I'm dabbling with the idea of trying contacts for hunting, which would solve both issues.
    Any feedback from contact wearers?
    Thanks!

    The target doesn’t float but the pin does so I focus on the target and blurr out the pin and trust the float.
    The more you focus on the pin it seems like it floats faster and farther.
    If you don’t already have target panic,chasing the pin will cause it

    This is probably more fitting for hinge, thumb button and resistance release shooters, but I've been taught that focusing on the pin can lead to more of a tendency to develop the dreaded target panic. Because you're so focused on trying to keep and hold the pin in the middle, you're more aware of the pin float, which can make you freeze up on your shot process as the pin floats off the X. If I focus on the target instead, I don't see the float as much and I have a smoother shot process and cleaner shot break. It just takes discipline to trust the pin float and being aware of the shot sequence/process all the way through the follow through.

    its good to hear others opinions on this issue as i myself am in my early 30s as well and have been fighting with the exact same thing you have described. for me i focus on my target and bc of that i started running an ezv sight 2 seasons ago. the problem i have there is i caught myself while hunting, looking past my sight completely and centering up the deer center of my housing as if i were running a single pin and i was hitting high so what i have done is i have figured out on my bow is i use the 220 ezv insert i believe and i cut the top tick marks off. now i know that defeats the purpose of the ranging of the ezv but i always used it as a see through multi pin sight anyways. so now my 20 yard sight in is my center mark the 30 yard is dead on the next mark down 40 yard is the flat at the bottom of the sight and for fun i drilled out the hole on the bottom and that just so happened to be 50 yards.

    What about bow setups: Those using extended bar target bow sights & 24" stabilizers & if newcomers NEED to buy into that market,, or,, the benefits for using a shorter fixed sight / shorter vibration dampening stabilizer ??? For a hunting bow - I don't have all that extra stuff hanging off my bows because it don't make sense to buy a light bow & then add 4# of sights/stabilizers/ect to it.....

    • @averagejackarchery
      @averagejackarchery  2 роки тому

      It all depends on what you want to shoot. If you're new to the sport and want to compete in unlimited or open classes, you're going to need all the target bars and whatnot. I've been shooting for nearly 20 years in the Bowhunter class and have never needed to deviate.

    Just wait for for your mid forties and Presbyopia, you think finding an aperture that works now is fun (it took me going on 5 years to find a working solution when my eyes got old )

      Not being precious (much), using smaller peep than in past to help clear up the target, smaller scope (rarely use a lens anyway, no need for clarifier) have recently resorted to verifier, have always found my scores dropped noticeably when I put a lens in the scope, have found that I get more issue with double vision when I try to use a lens in the scope (which kind of makes sense to me when I think about it given that by definition if you use a lens your two eyes are looking at two different images, one magnified, one not !)

    I have a pse uprising and I'm shooting with the peep that came on the bow,and I feel it's too small for my comfort. Its really fuzzy and it also makes my sight fuzzy . I wanted to know if a slightly bigger peep would help

    Im fortunate that I can shoot with both eyes open and focus on the target but still have a very clear pin that I can see float in and out of the lines. when hunting I have no recollection of the shot process on a live animal but alwasy get to watch the arrow hit the animal and know immediately if I made a good shot. Thanks for the content Jack

    What fixed my issues was switching to the ezv site. That got rid of the pin blur that also caused target blur. Now it's like shooting my ar the v is barely there but enough for me to easily frame the target regardless of range.
    Last year I got rid of the peep and went with a nose button and now my accuracy is the best it's ever been. Old eyes and bifocals suck for archery with pin sights

    In the Army, we were taught that focusing on the target was a no-no - they called it "bull gazing". My near vision is poor but distant is still good. What I do is shift between the pin and the target. It is working out so far. Getting old is not for weaklings. Thank you for the great content.

      I try "The Shift" too as I like to call it and it's been a mixed bag of results for varied distances. Indoors it holds its own though. Thanks for commenting!

      Interesting, ‘bullgazing’ never heard that term before. I was conversing with a retired Marine UA-cam buddy and he made a comment about when shooting with iron sights that you want to focus on the front pin through the rear hole until everything else around the hole is blurry, I guess the same principle. You don’t focus on the target but the pin on the front of the barrel.

    Focus on target, both eyes open. Shoot instinctively. (Of course that might involve an entirely different rig)

    I'm over 70, and my eyes don't play well with shifting focus between pins and target, so I have learned to focus on my target and live with blurry pins. It has taken a while to adapt, but it works for me.

    This is exactly what target recurve shooters do. For indoor, they focus on the sight pin. For outdoor target shooting in they focus on target.

    Back in the 1950s we thought by 21st century problems like poor eyesight would be problems no more. And here we are nearly a quarter of the way through the 21st century and still using 2,500 year old lens technology just to see a sight pin.
