  • In this episode of TFBTV, ‪@JamesReeves‬ is visiting Slovenian manufacturer, Tinck Arms, to see their Preun X16 rifle. According to marketing materials about the Perun:
    "A balanced mid-length General Purpose piston Rifle - This 16" barreled 5.56 NATO chambered GPR is anything but your basic 16" rifle by Tinck Arms. Smooth shooting piston reliability with the accuracy of a quality DI gun.
    The piston chamber of the Perun's revolutionary Hybrid Short-stroke operation is moved from above the barrel to the top of the barrel nut in the body of the weapon. As a result, the accuracy, balance, and recoil management of the gun are improved by removing extra torque and weight from the front of the weapon. The Perun uses a minimal amount of unique components, allowing enabling unrestricted customization and modification of the weapon using conventional AR parts.
    The Perun X16-16-GPR-E comes equipped with the proven heavy-duty 4150 Melonited Chrome-Moly Vanadium steel with a 1:7 twist and mid-length gas system. The muzzle is tipped with a 360-degree recoil reducer in black. Superlative Arms provides the Bleed-off adjustable gas block to optimize the Perun to your favorite ammunition and shooting preference.
    With the lower front-end weight, no gas blowback, and elevated sight rails, this GPR still embodies the 'Scoot N Shoot' with the addition of softer recoil and a true floating barrel over typical piston systems. The feather-weight polymer lower is equipped with an NP3-coated two-stage enhanced combat trigger."

      If it came to the U.S. market imo it’d sell like hotcakes due to the interchangeability with the AR since that means a large part of the AR aftermarket is available to the Perun X16.

    I'd say the most interesting part of the system is the 2nd rod in the contained bolt - bolt carrier - recoil spring assembly. It locks the bolt from the moment after it's unlocked & all the way through the return stroke. As a result, the cam pin isn't trying to rotate and grind on the receiver like on the AR, increasing the longevity of the receiver ( I think ).
    I believe a similar rod is also in the VHS-2/Springfield Hellion, doing the same job.
    Edit: Idiot me said bolt grinding on receiver. Now fixed

      @ArgolasBowmaster Рік тому +9

      @@Gl0ckb1te the BRN180 is entirely short stroke gas piston whereas the perun is a true hybrid short stroke gas piston and DI system. Basically it uses a shortened gas tube and makes the short stroke piston act like a gas key. The upside to it is the piston doesn't retract all the way into the reciever(like he said in the vid the piston only moves about 12mm) so the reciever doesn't get gasses and fouling punched back into it. A DI system is inherently more accurate than a ssgp rifle so making s properly functioning hybrid of the 2 would in theory make this rifle more accurate than a strictly ssgp gun but much cleaner running(and by extention more reliable) than a DI gun. This is more or less a very happy medium between systems. I have yet to get my hands on one for my own testing but everything I've read and watched seems to be overwhelmingly positive about the perun

    Love my Perun. I bought one right when they came out and another recently. They’re seriously sick guns and I re-barreled one for 300blk. I highly recommend. My only complaint is the insane tightness with which they torque their barrel nuts down. I heated many times with a torch, soaked overnight several times, and even brought it to the best gunsmith in my area. They couldn’t break it. Finally, they said they’d attach a pipe to the wrench but they made me promise I wouldn’t blame them if the receiver got fcked. Finally, they got the nut off. Sure, it fcked my received alignment, but eventually I bent it back to near spec. They’ve evolved a lot over the past couple years so I’m hoping they’ve worked through that. With all that barrel nut bullsht, I still love these guns. They run like a fcking spotted ape.

    1. less recoil
    2. faster reloading= mag would be slightly further
    3. transitioning to opposite side would be more comfortable as the brass and gas can eject a little further forward from the face
    4. theoretically slighly better trigger as the tigger bar would be a little sorter because the striker and actual trigger would be closer together
    Example the tavor 18 ich without the butt padd comes in at 26 inches
    A desing with a 16 inch barrel and 26 inch total lengh would still not be considered an sbr and give you 2 extra inches of play.

Pretty interesting and simple idea that combines the piston and bolt; being built into the carrier, effectively reducing parts but still keeping the function. Very cool on paper. I wish they would have integrated a way to adjust the gas. Possibly by pinning a little cup in the front of the piston, that can have different sized vent holes, and you can pull the bolt out and spin the cup and adjust the gas. Should be an easy upgrade later too, or for the aftermarket. super interesting as a base design, and easy to build upon.

    Having the Piston further back with the gas tube funneling gas back to it has the advantage of extra built in dwell time. The gas isn’t immediately acting on the piston like when it’s right above the gas port on most systems. It’s probably softer shooting than other short stroke systems I would guess.

  • @BB-yh5rd
    @BB-yh5rd Рік тому +4

    That is a cool system. I've always been an AK guy because growing up in altitude in the NW ARs struggle a little bit especially in the deep cold and hot dusty but you have to be a certain build and height to have the very specific ergonomics of any AK to enjoy it. My wife is 5'1" and outside of a 5.45 Krink which the ATF, well you know the story, ruined. This hybrid DI/piston might be one of those fringe ideas that before we know it will become mainstream. I already have the PSW in 7.62 but I really like this innovation and may be getting more into ARs if stuff like this keeps showing up.

    I like that there are designs coming out that are very well thought out like this. This seems like a good compromise between the benefits of short stroke piston but keeps the front end lighter and has a rail set up specifically for illumination. Has the cross compatability and economy of scale from the AR-15. I hope it works out for them.

    I hear from dudes online that gas blowback actually helps purge the chamber and keep it clean. AK vs. AR mud/snow/dirt tests seem to show the high pressure blowback system actually functions considerably more reliably in adverse conditions than piston systems. See InRange TV and Garand Thumb videos for evidence. So why does everyone think piston systems are the future and what we should all be using??

      It should handle it. These are all proven parts on other guns. They have simply combined the piston to the bcg. Otherwise, it's basically just the same short stroke piston system. They simply moved the piston from the gas block to the carrier.. and through an AR gas tube, which is also already proven.

  • @jimyeats
    @jimyeats Рік тому

    So....to recap, this is basically an AR-15 with a slightly heightened upper receiver to accommodate a compact recoil spring, bolt, and a short stroke semi-internal piston assembly that uses a standard gas tube as its gas feed source. Sounds cool on paper, not sure that it will yield significant benefits (other than the shortened recoil system similar to the AR-180) in regards to reliability or cleanliness, since that piston is still very close the overall bolt assembly and internals. Interesting though. Would be another fun option.
