How could anyone HATE this movie? It's The wizard of Oz WITH THE MUPPETS? It's actually the most accurate of any version I've seen.
You know, why not make Rowlf play Toto? He's already a dog and an iconic muppet. They could have still used a real dog that looked enough like him and then transform him when they got to Oz. Or even do like they did in that spin-off Kermit movie and use a realistic dog muppet.
That would have worked better than this.
Brian Henson and his sisters originally did not want to recast Rowlf with a new performer after their father Jim Henson passed away in 1990 because Rowlf was the closet to Jim Henson's personality more so than Kermit. As a result, Rowlf had a brief cameos and did not speak in Muppets Christmas Carol (1992), Muppets Treasure Island (1996), Muppets Tonight (1996-1998), Muppets in Space (1999), A Very Muppet Christmas (2002), and The Muppet's Wizard of Oz (2005). The Muppets Wizard of Oz was the last muppet show project that Brian Henson and his sisters worked on. After they left the muppets, Disney finally gave Rowlf a speaking role and expanded his role in the 2011 Muppet movie and recasted him to Bill Barretta who was one of Brian's best friends and muppeteer of Pepe.
That makes sense that the Henson siblings wouldn’t want to recast the Muppet that was the closest in personality to their dad. I have heard that Link Hogthrob used the voice Jim used when he carved the family’s Thanksgiving turkey and it was probably easy for them to not recast him because he wasn’t used very often outside The Muppet Show.
@@IronAxel6 he spoke very briefly in muppets tonight, and it’s a very merry muppet Christmas movie.
y'know, this movie seems to have a lot more cues from The Wiz than the original Wizard of Oz than would've expected
Waldorf: Even then it's unfaithful, DOH HO HO
Funnily enough, The Wiz is actually a legitimately good movie that many people simply do not like. It has some musical scenes that are shot like a live show, but that's its biggest problem. I frankly think that film is underrated. Roger Ebert even liked it more than The Wizard of Oz.
I would’ve rather see them adapt the book

Disassembled Kermit and Gonzo was a childhood scar for me.
For me too 😭
Same here 💔😭
Ikr that was so morbid
Seeing Kermit and Gonzo decapitated and mangled like that, might have scarred me for life.
Yeah. Haven't seen the decapitation of a fictional character this gruesome since the villain's death in Anastasia.
I would always leave the room at that part
Look like someone used the ruby slippers to get rid of the copyright banned.
Bizarro Critic Inc there s no place like copy right there s no place like copy right
In the original book the slippers were silver, like in this movie. The ruby slippers were made up by MGM to use more advantage of the color effects.
@@04279 And the movie Return to Oz split the difference since they _did_ have the rights to the movie they were a sequel to, so they made the slippers silver but covered in ruby so they can be faithful to both the other movie and to the books.
@@RoninCatholic Yes, sort of. Return to Oz was made by Disney and therefore they had to pay MGM for the ruby slippers and some specific elements.
@@04279 Disney, of course, having some of the deepest pockets in the entertainment industry and thus being able to afford to license anything they want.
Bob, what made Muppets A Christmas Carol and Muppets Treasure Island classics was that Brian Henson kept the movies closely assembling the source material respectfully with historically accurate costumes, set pieces, memorable songs, well-paced humor, human actors who played their characters and Muppets playing their characters perfectly as well. The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, on the other hand, has none of that.
Which I assume they haven't done any more book adaptations with the Muppets ever since. If they were to keep going like this, who knows what other book or book series they would botch up. What's next? The Muppets in the Hunger Games!?
I'd like to see bobsheaux review the Treasure Island muppets movie. Maybe even a marathon of Treasure Island adaptations, that would be cool.
@@katiebutler9927 Right. Like that will ever happen!
@@Autisticguywithacamera 4:19
One thing that made Muppet Christmas Carol and Treasure Island great was how the real actors played their roles completely straight to contrast from the zaniness of The Muppets (on a side note, Michael Caine and Tim Curry really wouldn’t feel out of place in serious adaptations of their respective stories). In Muppets Wizard of Oz, however, all of the actors play their roles comedically (and Ashanti’s performance left much to be desired).
The 2000's was a DARK time for the "Muppets".

The green glasses are from the book because the city wasn't really made of emeralds. It was a trick by the Wizard.
Sabrina Loizides-Merideth oh I see
Give "The Wiz" some credit, at least Dorothy had pointed out how her friends were smart, brave and genuine from scenes that had actually happened along with having her actually fear the wicked witch. And at least Diana Ross' Dorothy wasn't such a stereotype...she was a cry-baby, but not the cringy kind of sassy black woman that Ashanti played the character as.
I remember the wicked witch being kinda scary, especially during the scene with the crystal ball and her laughing, that was creepy.
Abrahem Samander Her death scene still freaks me out internally...

Also I loved Raven's rant on stupid designer shoes.

Wait a tic... This isn't muppets wizard of Oz IT'S THE MUPPETS THE WIZ! AHHHH!
Fun fact: the lion costume from the wizard of oz was made of actual lion skin and weighed 80 pounds, add that to the list of costume problems that the wizard of oz faced
Interesting fact: 10 years later after this came out, Queen Latifah and David Alan Grier, who played Auntie Em and Uncle Henry, would be in another Oz product “The Wiz Live!” Where David Alan Grier would play the Lion and Queen Latifah would play the title role
I was thinking the exact same thing!
This was bought for me as a present when it first came out because I LOVE The Muppets and The Wizard of Oz. So I eagerly began to watch this movie and I could barely sit through the whole thing. Every five seconds something new had me cringing. I have now come to realize that a big bulk of my problems came from the fact that unlike the other Muppet movies and the wizard of Oz this movie had no heart, no brains and no courage and it didn’t feel at all like home.
Or Oz.
I'm a wierd kid. I actually like this movie but my parents couldn't get me into Star Wars, I could never sit through THOSE!😂
8:38 Raven is me in bird form, I can rant all day about ridiculous fashion trends

Elizabeth Athineu yeah the reason it was Red in the famous MGM movie was to show off their tele colour technology at the time. Meaning in THEORY they could have had them silver😅

@@lightningmanmatthew 4:19
Another good thing about the movie is that Kermit, Gonzo, and Fozzie looked really cool as their characters
The actress playing Dorothy is a charisma vacuum. Her acting is just so wooden.
So, modern Disney?
I swear just seeing clips of her performance gives the impression that she could be mistaken for a 2 x 4.
Yeah, Ashanti’s singing is good. Her acting not so much.
Wow I thought this movie was a fever dream I had, I remember seeing it on ABC family as a kid and liking it. But it did not age well at all. And Raven, I agree those types of shoes are hideous.
It really was strange. I saw it when it premiered and remembered not liking it much.
The biggest thing that bothers me about this movie is that Kermit and Gonzo's roles seemed to be switched. Shouldn't Kermit be the Tin-Man and Gonzo be the Scarecrow?
I mean, Gonzo is one of the most heartfelt, friendly, and caring Muppets out there. So it doesn't really make sense that he's the Tin-Man (I mean, yeah, you could argue that they're trying to be ironic, but whatever). Gonzo is a pretty nice guy, but remember, he's also the same guy who thinks that anything painful and/or dangerous is *fun.* Not exactly the smartest thing to do.
And for Kermit, he's one of the most resourceful and logical thinking Muppets in the entire cast. So the Scarecrow role also doesn't make sense. Plus, though Kermit certainly isn't a jerk by any means, he can get frustrated pretty easily and he does have a tendency to snap at people when he gets mad enough. Maybe a little bit heart can help with that? 😉
You clearly put much more thought into this than the writers ever did
but isn't the point that scarecrow is the "smart one" and tin man is the "sensitive one"?
Oh yeah, I didn’t even think of that
I’ve always wanted to see the Muppets do an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. They have enough characters to adapt into characters from the book and you can’t possibly say that Gonzo wouldn’t make a perfect Mad Hatter. I know the Brooke Shields episode of The Muppet Show was based on Alice in Wonderland but I’m talking an actual full length movie and not twenty minutes of two books being greatly condensed to tell the story in twenty minutes.
Oh yeah, I can totally see it. lol
Gonzo - Mad Hatter
Bean Bunny - March Hare
Rizzo - Dormouse
Andy & Randy Pig - Tweedles
Kermit - King of Hearts
Miss Piggy - Queen of Hearts
Fozzie - Cheshire Cat
Uncle Deadly - Jabberwocky
Statler & Waldorf - the walrus and the carpenter
Rowlf - caterpillar (imagine what a pianist with all those hands could do! lol)

It says something when Tom and Jerry's the Wizard of Oz seems like a better adaptation then the one with the Muppets
Scarecrow even had his revolver in that one.

The muppet version is more accurate. The Tom and Jerry version is just a shortened animated remake of the 1939 movie.
@@forrestdupre9916 Agree tbh
This hurts seeing how Muppet Christmas Carol is my all time favourite Christmas movie oh how the mighty have fallen
This movie was too shallow and dull to capture the enchantment of Oz. Yet it was too bland and awkward to make the Muppets funny.
It failed on BOTH levels!
Either way, we both lose!
I watched this movie expecting a puppeteering masterclass fantasy film with great atmosphere like Christmas Carol and Treasure Island... instead I got a cheap remake of The Wiz with Muppets thrown in and a lot of lame jokes. Tho personally I found the Quentin Tarantino scene endearing. This film is already trash, let me have SOME comfort.
Hey, Hollywood, or Netflix... REMAKE *THIS* MOVIE, but actually adapt the book with the Muppets and practical effects!
Get Paul Williams to write the songs while he's still alive!
I dont think I've seen more fourth wall breaks in a Muppet movie than ever before
This Movie was my first introduction to the Wizard of Oz....
GAH! We need 30 CCs of MGM over here, stat!
I am totally on board for the Muppet version of Watchmen. So Rowlf is Rorschach. Fozzie is comedian. Thinking of other roles and character development....oh.... this gets dark. But lots of possibilities.
I'd watch it.
@@katiebutler9927 4:19
Ok, now I really want WatchMuppets to be an actual thing.
You know who would have made a good Dorothy? That one little girl from Sesame Street with that cat named Little Murray Sparkles. That would have been adorable. And the Wicked Witch in my opinion should have been an actual human actor and not a muppet.
Isn’t um Miss Piggy like vain or something 😅
Glad to see you’re video is unblocked bob, I always wanted to see you review this movie.
Hmm. I wonder if there will be a Muppets Treasure Island review
I think this could've worked if they followed in the footsteps of A Christmas Carol and Treasure Island
I liked this when i was a kid
I had a lot bad tastes
Still do
You says you’d have bad tastes if you like something from your childhood but everyone else hates?
They couldn’t just use Rowlf the Dog as Toto, that would’ve been better instead of the prawn. The Muppets doing a take on Wizard of Oz is a fantastic concept but it wasn’t produced by the right people. Instead we get unfunny humor, some of the characters are badly cast, tasteless, souless songs and poor writing.
Matthew Dilday at the time rowlf was yet to be recast and they were not sure to recast him because his character reflect jim personality so much they didn't feel there was a suitable and appropriate performer for the task.
Leonardo Assale: They could’ve used a different muppet dog then.
Matthew Dilday to be honest putting rowlf or other muppet dog would have been obvious and if we know something about the muppets is that they are unpredictable and they (almost) never take the obvious option, and even if rowlf was toto i don’t think the movie would have an improvement
Well since Bill Barretta voices both Rowlf and Pepe they probably decided to keep him to a role he was more use to at the time.
It isn't a good reason, but it is all I got.
Ashanti might not make a good Dorthy but I’d bet she’d be a good Tiana
I love Tiana. ^^
Yeah. She's decent enough for the role...
How could they screw up the Wizard of Oz?
Is it the guest star? *begs like Eugene from Hey Arnold* Also, the shrimp joke is just...awkward. And is it me, or is the reason why Piggy is cast as all the witches because they couldn't find any female Muppets at the time that were as recognizable as her? Or...what joke was made with that casting?
Personally i found Piggy as all the witches the only briljant move of this movie.
(knowing her ego she probably black mailed the actresses hired to play them, and from the bottom of her big hart volunteered to play al 4 roles)
Probably because the were following the movie adaptation of The Wiz instead of The Wizard of Oz.
KidSnivy96 oh
I actually didn’t mind Ashanti being cast as Dorothy. Maybe country singer Jessica Andrews would have been a better choice since she was a country girl like Dorothy, but her style of country pop music wasn’t as popular in 2005 as Ashanti’s Princess of hip hop/r&b music. But I think Ashanti brought some spunk, attitude, and a mind of her own to the character of Dorothy. Ashanti also interacted with the muppets fairly naturally, and I think it’s pretty obvious that she had fun making the movie. Critics felt that the storyline of Dorothy wanting to be a super star singer was selfish. But personally I didn’t see anything wrong with her going after what she wanted. And Dorothy comes to her senses later on in the movie about how its ok to spread her wings and go chase her dreams, but don’t leave the ones you love behind and don’t forget where you came from.
Ps for some reason Miss Piggy as they wicked witch of the west reminded me of Tiffany “New York” Pollard from Flavor of Love lol (not physically but personality wise)
If they were going to mess up the home is where your heart is message, why not have her conclude that "fame is nice and all, but it doesn't mean anything if your family isn't there to share it with you" or something
Book Dorothy was pretty much Hailee Steinfeld as Maddie from True Grit. Her lack of visible fear, sentiment or amazement at anything was part of her character and probably typical of 19th century farm girls.
Are you referring to the original True Grit or the Coen remake?
@@josiahagin2100 the Coen remake. I've never seen the original.
Can we talk about how good the wizard of Oz in concert was? With Jewel and Nathan lane!? It was self aware, cute and actually pretty good.
Jewel? Are you talking about Anne Hathaway?
1:19 Bob, it all came down to whoever wrote this movie in the first place. The Muppets Wizard Of Oz really could have been something. The person who wrote this movie clearly had no respect for either The Wizard Of Oz or The Muppets.
I can't walk in high heels well, especially the skinny heals. Those are a nightmare and a pair of broken anckles waiting to happen.
I would also like to point out that in a addition to the references and the R&B number, the movie is also dated because of the “I wanna be rich and famous” plot that feels really tacky and hard to sympathize with in a post recession era and where we now know that being a celebrity is very overrated. It makes one wonder why anyone would want to be a celebrity.
David Alan Grier and Queen Latifah both later started in The Wiz. Coincidence? I think not.
Did Robot Chicken direct this movie and the muppets just took the place of the usual stop motion dolls?
I honestly found The Wiz to be my favorite adaptation of this classic story, and possibly the second best film version. This seemed like an awkward hodgepodge of the book and most of the major adaptations to date with original aspects. It sure don't help that David Alan Grier and Queen Latifah are Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Retroactively.
See MGM's Wizard of Oz or Wiz 1978 and stay clear of this film I'd say.

17:49 I think it would have been funny and in the spirit of The Muppets if they did their own parody of the torn up Scarecrow scene. Have Kermit reciting parts of the original quote and Gonzo chime in saying "Geesh you're telling me!" 20:55 we even see they could have done something like that when the Wizard removed Kermit's head and we still see his mouth moving.
Two things that go well together? Bobsheaux and Raven Fox. The Buddiverse and Bob's Box.
It’s a shame how terrible this movie is, because it actually remembers details from the Oz books most adaptations don’t remember, like the color coded way the land was supposed to look, the witches all wearing white, the silver slippers, etc. it’s a shame how few adaptations remember those things is all.
6:34 🤦♂️ I can’t believe the advertised Pink Floyd’s dark side of the moon.
I remember watching it when it premiered on ABC (2005 iirc). I remember it not being good. This is like The Last Jedi for Muppets.
3:33 when uncle Henry asked Dorothy if she missed the bus, I think he was referring to just the general city bus, not the muppets bus. The general city bus was probably how Dorothy got around town.
Glad to see it unblocked. Today I had a very bad day.
But this makes me happy as a Fan of your work and Jim Henson in General.
Love the new theme song BTW.
Why didn't they have Rowlf be Toto? Not only is he, well...a dog but he is simple and likable enough to be Dorothy's companion. Pepe is fine, but he's more like an annoying pest to Dorothy here than a loved one, certainly better in small dosages.

You have obviously never seen Muppets Most Wanted!
You probably won't like my idea of how I portrayed the Oz characters in my Battle Royale series then.😥
I portrayed them like fairytale equivalent of the Fantastic 4 with references to the original novel series & the movie 😅.:
*Just like the movie, Scarecrow, Tin Man & Lion were originally human & farmhands of Auntie Em & Uncle Henry, but were there before Dorothy moved in.
Until they were caught in the Oz twister that transformed them into the Oz trio that we know with no memories of their past lives.
*Dorothy & family officially moved to Oz (just like in the novels) and becomes a new Good Witch of Oz to protect those from the now resurrected villains (Witch of the West, Nome King, etc.) .
*The Scarecrow (officially going by the nickname of "Sunny" ) has super intelligence & elastic abilities (making him the Mr. Fanastic of the crew) and later developed a relationship with the mute, crippled, and depressed Marissa aka The Little Mermaid (after being brought back to life).
*Tin Man is pretty much the same as the book & the movie, only he's developed more into a tough guy with soft heart kind of character.
And he falls in love & later be in a relationship with Ellie "C.I.N.D.E.R" Block aka Cinderella (who portrayed as a female mechanic with a robotic suit).
*The Lion becomes more brave over time, as well as developing super strength & ultra-sonic roars that can damage.😅
