Doug Swink yeah I wouldn’t recommend a cockatoo for your first bird, I would recommend a budgie or a cockatiel! I have both and I have an amazing experience with them, if you want any tips you are more than welcome to ask! :)

      What type of bird??
I rescued a pigeon years ago I found him on the streets of Dublin kids put an elastic band on the wing so it fell off from loss of blood supply poor bird still dreams of flying but he thinks he is a parrot he's gas with the cats who were kittens when we got him, he jumps on our huge Tom cat who lies back to let the pattot/pigeon Do his little I've attached you moves then scrapers so the cat can chase him when new ppl see them they think the cats about to eat the bird it gets rough but I've never seen dextors nails out ..I should try catch it on film but there sly about it sneaking to the kitchen when no one's looking for a role in the hay

you might wanna use a schedule when giving birds food. some birds get so spoiled that they eat 24 hours even when not hungry and as a result they poop too soon and all times.
I have been told to remove my birds food for specific times to limit some birds from overeating.
also, if your bird is so bored he would find only food to entertain even when not hungry. to limit this problem you should give him other activities to perform and other games to play and not making food everything to the bird.

    This is really great info!
As a parent of 6 children and now a parent of feather babies it’s interesting how similar some of the techniques are in some cases.
There’s a method of potty training young babies called elimination communication. You start right after birth. You pay attention to your baby’s cues that they show before eliminating. Then when they begin to show they are ready you hold them over a toilet or potty chair and say whatever words you use for peepee or poopy.
This method is used all over the world.

I have a Vinny named Lorenzo. Let's Vent - When Lorenzo did bird doo while playing with my husband, husband would say in a bird voice "mom had to poop", which was my clue to come clean up the bird doo. At the same time, I was working on training Lorenzo to fly to the swing perch over the kitchen sink to take care of business while out of the cage. The smart bird combined both efforts and started flying to the swing perch over the sink, doing his business and squawking 'mom, had to poop'. Not thrilled with my galah vocalizing, 'mom, had to poop' each time bird doo occurred, we change up the language... now it is 'vent mom vent'. Both husband and bird use this phrase to notify me of bird doo occurrences. While engaged out of his cage, the swing perch over the sink is always the favorite to retreat to for venting and singing 'vent mom vent', unless in direct play with my husband, wherever it occurs is 'fun' for both, as they each call out to me 'vent mom vent'. I come with the wipe and clean up the droppings, they 'giggle' and continue their play together, the rest of the time venting and squawking 'vent mom vent' takes place over the sink.
@Marlene Mc'Cohen, if it was not for you, I would have never guessed birds could be potty trained. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!

If the birds can fly, or the cage is close enough, can they take themselves to potty or do you have to carry them every time?

I had a Halfmoon Conure for 26 years that pooped only 2-3 times per day. Potty training really wasn't even necessary with her.
However the Blue Crown I have now must poo every 10 minutes. It's completely insane how much and how often this one poops!

Great info! I figured this out by trial and error and initially it was tough not to react negatively when my lovebird would go on me, and he obviously didn’t know what to do if I got upset so I watched him and would set him down occasionally to see if he would go. Once he went I praised him and picked him up, and I would approximate the time when he was likely to need to go, setting him down and telling him to poop, then praising and picking him up once he went. It was hit or miss to start off, however he learned fairly quickly and so it’s been great since then. The biggest challenge is to try and do this when he’s on my shoulder since I can’t see when he goes and I get preoccupied and forget to set him down.

I felt attached last night, so I've been looking for my bird for ages, I finally found a great breeder here cos let's face it there's not many birds in Ireland, so I found a breeder laying started end of January I've searched for a rescue I offered to fly parrot rescue ppl to Ireland but all said I was two far away to be able to help.. And I've been hurt thinking young birds were home alone all day with no toys, it was upsetting and there was no birds it was an attempt at the shipping scam, not something I'd fall for as I've spoke to the best brid transport company in the world and he was prepared to help me get these rescues to Ireland... So excited I'd finally found a breeder for next season chick, and all I got was that's mean try rescue like it wasn't the first thing I tried, plus I live between Ireland and Bulgaria, I need a bird who can get used to long car trips so any birds I take care of will need papers to travel between the 2, I've a little farm there. But I just love that ppl assume that I didn't try that rirst.. So I did think I'd have to stick with the blue and gold and I wouldn't have minded but I've been offered a harlaquin cgick not even laid yet if this is my bird it will happen if the university has a better plan that wil happen first

Learn to observe the bird's behavior just before they poop; this means you have to watch your bird closely when it gets close to the time that he's due to poop. If you see them start to squat, say something to slightly stop them, get them to 'up' and sit them on a perch or cage door. Then let them poop while saying whatever word you want them to understand as meaning poop. We used 'poop' because it's not a common word said. 'sh*t' isn't good, because someone might say it while the bird is on your shoulder, and well, you know what will happen. We didn't use potty because it sounds like body and our friend's name Dotty. It takes a while. but it will be worth it to have a bird that won't be pooping on you all the time. After a while, your bird will poop on command, as well as say it just before he does it, so you also have a warning if he's sitting on you as to what's coming.

Great information! Just like potty training a child. Common sense, but I had to have someone let me know it's not that different than a child! Thank you for sharing this great information with us!

❤ thank you for the encouragement. Usually my girl won’t poop on me but my boy, he so will!! They are almost 4 month old tiels and starting to really develop unique personalities so it’s time to work on the deuce deuce training.

I have a green cheek conure and he has a huge biting issue with little kids and my family members and he is extremely territorial when someone comes to me or near me he starts going crazy and charges at them what do I need to do

he may be jealous of other people coming near you. treat him for a good behaviour when your freinds are near.
first try to let him do any trick he knows with a presence of another person, BUT that person should not be your attention. Let the bird feel like he is still your attention.
After he does the trick treat him and let the other person get closer to you little.
Then ask the bird to do tricks again and treat him again.
after a while ask the bird to initiate something with that person (ANY EASY TASK like taking a toy from that person or so on)
this way you train your bird to interact and behave with others.
NOTE, you only need the bird to initiate NOT the person as if the bird would not be ready, he might take a nigative reaction.
with time passing the bird would learn better.

Jacob Hileman look I have had the same problem to where I wanted to get rid of my bird. My bird loves and go crazy for millet treats. I would take the treat and show him and slowly put it in the cage while holding it but my fingers are out of the way and slowly move my other hand to him or I would put my finger on the opening of the cage and stick the treat in the cage yo where he can reach ot and slowly move the treat to where he will soon have to step on my finger to get to the treat and eventually he calmed down

I heard some people say potty training is bad bc if you are not there to tell the bird to go potty it will keep it in and can cause infection?
Can someone please tell me if this is true or not

Just subscribed about an hr ago, where can I go to learn about birdy sweeties? I'd like to learn about how they came into your life, etc... I thought at 1 point about 3 yrs ago that I might want to adopt a bird, but bcuz I did research and watched UA-cam videos about birds, I quickly learned that it's best if I have a bird via Gotcha, Max and Pebble and now your birds. They're just to darn cute! Hope you have a peaceful day 😎

I just read the same thing about potty training in one of the books I got to get ready for a 25yo B&G rescue that I am adopting. I want to be prepared for her.

Hi, I was just wondering if it is ok to not have a cockatoo in a cage at all? like in a room with a lot of perches and toys.

Thanks for sharing and really appreciate it. I just brought home a grown African grey and can't even get close to the cage to give its food without it's showing an aggressive behavior and screams to the top of its voice . Even when am passing by, it starts screaming and seriously don't know what to do about it. Really needs some guidance here thanks
