Before this match even started, I was expecting an easy victory for Monica, especially with the way she played in the semifinals against Hingis. It was almost a fluke as to how Monica lost that first set (e.g. missing the overhead smash). And in the 3rd set, I was really shocked at how impatient she seemed because that's really rare for her. Still, one has to give a lot of credit to Arantxa. I was never a fan of hers but on this occasion (and on several others), she proved how good she could be as she was the last one standing.
The difference is the key points. Monica's form during 1998 French Open to US Open was one of the best she ever had since 1995 (the other good period was 2000-01). She, according to her own words, was finally focused on her game for the first time in many days, and was able to create some great shots and run much faster. She was on a very good form in this tournament. However, her poor key point conversion killed the chances, which she should have not wasted. Arantxa ran for her life to get whatever shots back and played her A-game with wisdom. I am happy Arantxa proved her worth and status in the WTA, perhaps for the final time, by this match when everybody said her time had been over. On the other hand she also showed great personalities toward her good friend who fought hard against hardships and grief. I would not say this is an all-time classic (those crowns belong to such finals as 1995 WC, 1992 FO, 1994 USO) but it was very entertaining with some brilliant rallies. An emotional match and so was the trophy ceremony.

You can't say it could have been 63 60 because even if Seles won that first set, it does not mean the she would have won the second set. Maybe Sanchez would have won the second. It's either you win the point or not. It's either the ball stays in or not. This goes for any match, any players.
I felt that Arantxa won back lots of French support from the 1998 victory. From 1996 and until her win over Serena here in R4 she was not well received. She seems popular again in FO following her win here in 1998.
I find it so wonderful to see lovely comments about both girls, how they both played such a great tournament and how they had such unique games. I'm a huge Arantxa fan but I also loved Monica and I would've loved for both of them to enjoy further grand slam success because they truly deserved it. What annoys me is the constant commentary in this match about how Arantxa's opponents made so many UE's, how ASV couldn't rely on that in this match etc. Arantxa executed a unique style of play which no other player could and yes, it resulted in UE's from her opponents. But I resent the implication that her game was less potent or valid because of it's style - Serena would win a slam a little more than a year later, Lindsey won USO a few months later, Schnyder was hot at the time - ASV's clay court tenacity drove her opponents into making errors because of her phenomenal retrieving ability.
If you watch the whole broadcast you would find out the male broadcaster used the unforced error stats to praise ASV for being the IT factor as to why her opponents made mistakes. It was actually a compliment.
Zoharrah De Guzman ...Sanchez has a positive record against Davenport 7-5. Even in 2000 Davenport had to beat Sanchez in three sets; unlike Martinez over whom Davenport would win only losing three games each in 2000. Sanchez's retrieving skills, proved enduring over time, hurt the rhythms of Davenport and the Williams Sisters a lot.
Incredible to think this was the last GS final for both ladies, more so for Monica whose game still kept her consistently in the top 10 beyond the year 2000 after which Arantxa wasn't competing at the top level. Arantxa really should've made the 2000 final, I'll never to this day understand how she capitulated in the semis against Conchita. Monica had an amazing 2001 summer hard court season plus other purple patches but despite remaining strong, her power game looked so one dimensional in the face of the new power generation who could mix it up with so much more variety.

Sanchez was very prepared for this match, and her hard work paid off. It was a treat to see Sanchez produce her trademark scrappy and gutsy play. It was also a nice run to the finals for Seles despite her personal situation. Credit to Sanchez for also coming back from a let-down and tired 1997.

In a better world, Seles would have left them all in the dust.

Both great ladies-this match reminded me of the 1995 U.S. Open Seles lost to Graf-especially score wise. I hated to see Seles lose especially so soon after her dad died-she wore black throughout the tournament and his wedding ring around her neck out of respect. Sanchez was a superb player and reminded me of a human backboard as she got to almost everything. We are unlikely to see their likes again.

Sanchez Vicario's game plan was to tire out Seles. Seles' massive racquet gave her power, but with that power came fatigue. Had Seles' tried to use a smaller frame, 100 vs what she used in this match at 120, that lighter swing weight might had made a difference to counter Vicario's plan to constantly give junk balls to tire Seles, then hit winners sensing Seles' fatigue.

Many other athletes come back after a broken arm or leg, after the death of a loved one, etc (Jordan did and led the Bulls to three more three-peats). Seles was figured out and that is the only reason why she could not not win but one more after 1993. If she won this second set 6-0,that means she should have had what it took to win. She made other finals and touring titles after 1993, but players had her game, namely her ALWAYS two-handing everything--therefore her Grunts. It was stressing her torso and shoulders more than you and her care to see or admit. You are a fan of Seles not tennis, and that is obvious. Sanchez won this because she was the better, the same with the GOAT, Steffi, regardless of the stabbing.
