Another UA-cam channel outstanding for people who love to cruise is Tips for Travelers’. Gary Bembridge is a long-time cruiser, and he has amassed a large following on UA-cam for his plainly spoken, yet meticulous attention to details, maximizing your cruise dollar, River cruises, ocean cruises, economical, to luxury lines, recommendations, and excursions. Although I no longer cruise, I binge watch his videos 😂👍🏼
Scrolled thru comments to see if anyone mentioned Gary. I have zero interest in cruising with large ships (been there done that, not impressed) and can't afford the smaller ones. But Gary talks about all of them. Absolutely agree with everything above.
Oh my goodness, you are SO KIND. Thank you so much. I love this video, I used to work in data before I worked in cruising and I looooooove the stats! CLIA always have interesting things to share, I looked at their stats when I was researching world cruises and found the average age of a world cruiser is 20+ years higher than the average cruiser, very interesting. 💗💗
I saw a headline on Twitter, and it made me LOL: "I don’t understand why anyone would pay money to be trapped on a boat with 10,000 people when suicide is free." I'm 25, and have NEVER been on a cruise and will never go on a cruise. no thank you, personally.
I went on my first cruise in 2004 and my last cruise in 2019. Over 180 nights at sea. It's crazy how much some things have changed while others have stayed the same.
If you've never tried cruising, you should give it a whirl. It may not be your cup of tea, but cruising is awesome and addicting. We went on a short cruise in March, and we have two more planned in 2024! We like the smaller and mid-size ships better than the megaships, because there are less kids on board and they can go to smaller ports the megaships cannot. We like the smaller ships' feel better two.
Something we’ve begun to see in recent years (both in North America and Europe) are ports restricting the size of ships and number of passengers that can dock per day. Yet at the same time you’ve got lines like Royal Caribbean, MSC and Carnival building larger and larger ships. If they don’t also continue to build smaller to mid-size vessels the quality of experience/product that the cruise industry offers will be diminished overtime.
Emma Cruises is a fantastic channel; LOVE her content (and yes, I have bought a "Captain Hudson" plushie). Gary Bembridge at Tips For Travellers is also excellent, as is Tony at La Lido Loca.
As a retired Submariner, I loved the 2 cruises I experienced, as being able to order a literal bucket of Becks beer before the lines were even cast-off was amazing to me. I loved the Carnival cruise I experienced, because the food was phenomenal and the entertainment was moreso (Their Beatles tribute was legendary). My Princess experience was a bit of a let-down, though the excursions we took were nice, with many memories the Bride and I will never forget. I love the cruise-line business model, because it's so appealing to such a wide swath of the demographic. One tip I would give to the industry, if they haven't already embraced it: Have a Bourbon Bar with a live Honky Tonk band....................... Edit: Had to give a shoutout to the crew that pulled off the most epic Beatles Tribute in history....................
the reason for the decrease in china is that their economy is suffering, they have had 'mass lay off's' and multinational companies are also relocating.
Cruising is coming back with a bang, especially given the larger ships are a holiday in themselves - like a resort hotel but better. Plus the port days when they organise tours etc Some of the restaurants are world class dining.

I very much agree with you about Emma Cruises. A great channel. Just went over to her community page to write to her about your compliment and read her last post saying she was feeling under the weather, I think your comment should help her feel better.
Seconded. I think what sets Emma‘s channel apart from some others out there is the sheer variety of cruises/lines she considers. Very open-minded about her work.
Looking at the other news of economic turmoil especially in the property sector in China I could well imagine a cruise might not be top priority this year.
1. Emma Cruises is the most comprehensive yet efficient reviews of countless ships, types of rooms, and lines. 2. MSC's Cruise Line is starting to get their footing in terms of quality. Still behind RCL, Carnival, and Norwegian in many aspects of quality and efficency, but while MSC has room for improvement, I am going on the Meraviglia out of Brooklyn for the 2nd time in 2 years. because on a "Fun for Value" ratio it is an incredible value.
Thank you ( SAL) for being Detailed on the Cruise industry as a whole. I am asking Don't know if you have ever done a video on CRUISING on a cargo ship. 😊 Don't know if that is the interest of anyone😊 But just asking your expert opinion on describing if a person is interested in cruising on a BIG container ship or bulk carrier. I have talked to people that have done this. Just thought that you could talk about what it requires. And the limited thing that you can do on board. But remember you go to PORTS that the cruise industry does NOT go too 😊
I have been sailing on-board cruising ships for over than 10 years the change that I went through was huge. Unfortunately, these changes have never been positive for those who work in this sector or for passengers. Today these companies just want to save money and watch every penny spent, this has brought a significant degradation in this industry.
My first job as a Licensed Mate was with CruiseWest ( think American Cruise Lines) a small company that served from Cabo San Lucas, MX to Glacier Bay, AK. I hated talking cargo! 3,000 TEUs did not complain about the bow thruster starting up at 03:00.
Thanks for this review. I enjoy most of your videos, but as a cruise ship cruiser this one is closer to home. So a few comments: 1. You mentioned Transatlantic cruises as mostly repositioning. I'm wondering if Queen Mary 2, all by herself doesn't do more than all the repositioning cruises. OK, QM2 is NOT a cruise ship, she's an ocean liner. ;-) But she's listed with her cruise ship sisters in these reports. [I have two scheduled in December to add to the two I've already done. My new kilt and Prince Charlie should be here by then. ] 2. I agree as to the three biggest companies. BUT! I'd suggest that MSC is coming on strong. Since MSC is private are their numbers even available? 3. If you are the quest speaker on ACL again please let us know as soon as possible. You as guest speaker would make the cost worth it. Maybe one of the AICW cruises? 4. I was surprised you included Esys in your list of VLOGers. I like his work, but so much of it is not about the cruise industry. Next time you mention Emma, consider mentioning Captain Hudson. Her contribution, via the captain, to Mercy Ships is noteworthy. 5. I seem to be becoming more and more a small ship cruiser, and a six star line cruiser. So the focus on the large ship lines, is understandable. But, the other parts of even the big three are worth a comment or ten. Thanks Again, David Heinsohn
We just finished paying for our Viking cruise on the Rhine for 2025 and we're so excited. We did the Danube this year and it was great. Really love the small ships with less than 200 Passengers.
Good Heavens!! Icon of the Seas has a max capacity of 7600 guests! And a crew of 2350. That is a whisker short of 10,000 people could be on board. This ship is more than 3 times the gross tonnes of a Yamato Class Battleship. 248,000 tonnes vs 70,000~ tonnes. They look incredibly top heavy to me. Not a petri dish I am interested in. And if the have a problem in the ocean, it will not be good. Will they have a problem? Who knows. If they build 50 of these, someone will have a catastrophic problem. Additional note. A Gerald R. Ford Class aircraft carrier is about 100,000 tonnes.

Had an opportunity with my wife to go on an Alaskan Cruise with my mom and dad, but we didn't go because of scheduling. Mom and dad had a GREAT time and they almost changed my mind. As a career navy guy, I guess I had my fill. Hey, I think I'd be "all in" for a WGOWS cruise, tho! :) Your presentations are informative, humorous and fun .... and your commenting section is full of great input by some pretty smart people apparently.

*raises hand* Love your stuff... but having done 5 1/2 Deployments in my career, hearing about people bitching about getting sick on cruise ships, brings smiles to my expression (sadly, when less than 1% actually serves, lot of folks wear those red foggy glasses loudly, when it comes to the cruise ship industry)...
My son and I went on our second post-COVID cruise this past fall out of NYC. The cruise ship was packed, but there were probably 10-20 percent fewer cruise personnel on the ship. Many things on the ship did not work, and I was surprised by the amount of rust on the ship. While I was happy with the cruise, how far the standards on the ships had declined shocked me.
Cruising is our favorite vacation type: you get to visit several places while only having to unpack once! Over the last 12-years, we've done 5 cruises on NCL and 4 on Disney... and of course we have a trip on the books for this year (NCL)... COVID caused us to delay our 2020 and 2021 plans, otherwise we'd average nearly 1 per year... Before our daughter was born, my wife and did two cruises (honeymoon and 5th anniversary) on RCCL--we keep talking about trying the Icon of the Seas class, but we've really been hooked on NCL's Haven...
An underrated gem of the European cruise market is the Baltic/Scandinavian itinerary. I could see countries in the region being at the forefront of making cruises more sustainable though. The industry might need to be more collaborative when it comes to future ship designs.
Nice to see the video you promised us, delayed a few times because of shipping in the news (especially the action around the collapse of the Key Bridge.) I didn't quite catch an explanation (or maybe you didn't give us one?) for the entirely different stock price trajectory of Royal Caribbean compared to the other cruise operators. Could you clarify this, Sal? Worthwhile even if you must repeat yourself. I haven't been on a cruise since 2003 so I've been watching Emma's videos to see the amazing facilities and interior styling of today's ships, so different from any ship I've ever been on. My grandfather took me on Christmas cruises to the Caribbean -- it was the only warm weather vacation he could manage, being afraid of flying and never having learned to drive -- from 1968 to the mid 70's and that was so different from today's cruises that I found the 2003 cruise a great disappointment -- maybe the aura of youthful memories poisoned the experience.
If you put together a group cruise I am in. Bring some guest speakers for TED (ish) talks on all things marine commerce/travel, and it would be worth every penny.
Questions overhead on cruise ships: 1. Does the screw stay on board? 2. Do these stairs go up or down? 3. Is the TV/internet cable? 4. Is the toilet water fresh or salt?
My favorite question was: 5. How high are we above sea level? (if, say, you're 4 decks above the waterline: maybe 40 feet, according to Captain Obvious)
Thanks for the trip aboard the Sal information Boat. As an older person I find cruises to be very relaxing; unpack once, be transported from place to place and no need to worry about where to eat. My one concern is that the ships are growing too big. I sailed on the old Sun Princess and that was big enough for me. Am I going to be restricted to where I go in future?
We have one or two cruise ships stop each week at our small town in the upper Lynn Canal of SE Alaska. The boats carry more passengers than the population of our entire town. I have always viewed the ships as incubation vessels for norovirus and the passengers as vectors who would spread it to the towns they visit. Now, after all that prejudice, I have signed on for a cruise to the Northwest Passage in late summer. I enjoy your channel and am one of many who migrated here courtesy of Ward Carrol.
Back around 2000, NOAA seeking funding for nautical charting took a poster of the US Capitol with one of the large cruise ships at the time behind it. Made an impression about the importance of keeping the surveying.
Here we are 112 years after the Titanic sank and we're still not putting enough lifeboats on cruise ships. There's something wrong with that. Sal regarding the houthis if you're hammered enough on your cruise on their shooting at you you might not even notice You could possibly think it was fireworks
Contractor in Valdez, Ak, an on-again, off-again cruise ship port. I can always tell when a cruise ship is in port, a pall of smoke spreads over the town. It's ironic that people take cruises to AK to "see the unspoiled natural beauty!" while leaving a plume of choking smoke everywhere they go. It took decades but the problem of cruise ships just discarding huge amounts of plastics and garbage overboard because they rarely got caught and the fines were cheaper than paying to dump it properly when back in port, it looks like that is significantly being addressed but, despite their very well funded damage control campaign, I know commercial fisherman in Prince WIlliam Sound who say the cruise ships still dump trash in the sound, they just know where to do it so as to not get caught. So if you take a cruise to Alaska, you are destroying and trashing Alaska.
I'm not particularly surprised by gen-x being a bigger take of the cruise space. It's a group that is early-mid 40s into late 50s or so which seems like prime age for that kind of travel.
Well done Sal. Good report. This cruise ship side of you, I didnt realise it before, but i guess the hint was always in the colourful shirts you wear? 👍💯🇬🇧😉
If I ever go on anything as big as Icon of the Seas again it had better have a flight deck and an Air Det. I like the small cruise ships much better. You get to interact with the crew and your fellow passengers much more. They also get into the smaller ports the big boys can't get into.
I know for myself that I will never ever set foot on one of those floating mass graves build and exploited by mafioso like, for instance, the ones in Genoa. No sir, I will not. Especially not due to the ever rising center of gravity by newly build ships to save fuel costs. Scenario: heavy storm at mid ocean > overall power outage > the ship turns broadside into the wind and the waiting is now for the perfect wave to arrive > the ship capsizes with all souls trapped in a dystopian blacked out upside-down world.
The Middle East one doesn’t go close to the areas of the Houthis. The ones that maybe effected are the ones out of Dubai because of Iran. The ones on the red sea are going out of Jeddah and going north
No Cruise Radio? I worked with Doug Parker from there when I worked for American Cruise Lines. I met a fellow Domer while working there. In the US small ship industry I worked with many Maine and Massachusetts Maritime grads. We lost the oldest American cruise line because of the covid shutdown.
The closest I ever got to a cruise is I have a brand new sailboat motor in my closet. It's there to help me restore a boat, but then there's a place to keep a boat. Ouch. I've watched a few cruise channels, but they never tell you how to afford a cruise or what they are about. There has to be more than free drink perks, outside balconies, and wifi. Holland America is competing with a boat I can put on top of a car when I'm done. A one night cruise costs as much as my new air cooled outboard that needs a boat.
Speaking of sending a cruise ship through the Red Sea, how resilient are modern cruise ships damage from strikes below the waterline and threats above? Is your Red Sea cruise going to turn out to be Lusitania-2024 Edition?
The cruise ship industry is taking over small marinas in Port Canaveral, Florida. Bluepoints Marina and Cape Marina will be gone soon, so they can dock more cruise ships. So fewer slips for commercial fishermen and recreational boaters. Money talks and regular folks get buried.
What?! They are closing Cape Marina??? We was docked there on my 44 Gulfstar Ketch for 2 weeks back in 2017. That's sad. Where are boaters going to dock their boats?😢
@@seagoddess524 Bluepoints will be gone soon and Cape Marina didn't renew their lease. The Port might start building on Cape Marinas dry storage yards this summer. Either a car parking structure or a small boat structure, like Bluepoints. Lot's of unknowns at this point.

Thank you for the Sal boat information with the wonderful humor and real knowledgeable
There should a special port tax on Royal Caribbean for having the most annoying commercials. 😆
You have excellent tastes. Emma Cruises is awesome and she's the reason I got your channel recommended to me awhile back. Cheers to you both!
Awwh thanks Frank!!
Good job Sal, great plug to get ACL to have you back on board!!
Love the videos !
An underrated gem of the European cruise market is the Baltic/Scandinavian itinerary.
I could see countries in the region being at the forefront of making cruises more sustainable though. The industry might need to be more collaborative when it comes to future ship designs.
❓ I wonder how many people klick LIKE 👍 & post a comment before they start watching Sal’s videos?! 🤔
I usually like videos from creators I subscribe to before I forget.
Probably too many. 🤔👍💯🇬🇧
Sal is the all inclusive "ship" dude...:)
WGOWS Cruise! Sign me up.
Thanks for another great video. I learned a lot.
Love cruising. Great to hear your perspective.
Questions overhead on cruise ships:
1. Does the screw stay on board?
2. Do these stairs go up or down?
3. Is the TV/internet cable?
4. Is the toilet water fresh or salt?
My favorite question was:
5. How high are we above sea level? (if, say, you're 4 decks above the waterline: maybe 40 feet, according to Captain Obvious)
What is the draft of the ship? - Bud Light and Stella Atrois
The simple answer is usually the right answer. The CCP is not allowing their subjects to leave.
Unless they send their young men to illegally invade the United States
Nice, "The Sal Boat" that's the quality I tune in for!
Great video Doctor Sal! Most informative! Thank you Sir!
You forgot the invasive mud crabs etc. Alaska is great, tourist traps are not. I guess we can be happy that the tourists are migratory.
Waxed paper, please.
😮 That's right. Rock and roll cruises are targeted for noise pollution 🤘
I did one cruise ship for a company, moving equipment. Really not for me, but the business is amazing considering they are 100% entertainment.
I'm not particularly surprised by gen-x being a bigger take of the cruise space. It's a group that is early-mid 40s into late 50s or so which seems like prime age for that kind of travel.
GenX here. Cruise ships aren’t my cup of tea, but I see the appeal.
Ha. I would absolutely go on a sponsored cruise with you and the ‘What is Going on With Shipping’ gang.
Well done Sal. Good report. This cruise ship side of you, I didnt realise it before, but i guess the hint was always in the colourful shirts you wear? 👍💯🇬🇧😉
I like the Reyn Spooner!
Thank you 🎉🎉
Yacht cruising is certainly the ideal way to go!
Have a great day!
If I ever go on anything as big as Icon of the Seas again it had better have a flight deck and an Air Det.
I like the small cruise ships much better. You get to interact with the crew and your fellow passengers much more. They also get into the smaller ports the big boys can't get into.
Australians love cruising.
I know for myself that I will never ever set foot on one of those floating mass graves build and exploited by mafioso like, for instance, the ones in Genoa. No sir, I will not.
Especially not due to the ever rising center of gravity by newly build ships to save fuel costs.
Scenario: heavy storm at mid ocean > overall power outage > the ship turns broadside into the wind and the waiting is now for the perfect wave to arrive > the ship capsizes with all souls trapped in a dystopian blacked out upside-down world.
agree plenty of lines to deal with. high port taxes we have to pay instead of the liners themselves. i am not paying their taxes.
Awesome. Leaves more room for me.
A real life "Poisidon Adventure?" 🤔

Don't forget to bring your Donner Party Cookbook
so great of you to mention Emma Cruises!
I know right! So kind.
Could you do segment on how the Jones Act impacts the Cruise Ship operation in and around the United States?
In early 20th century fiction books there were sometimes characters who booked passage on "freighters". Is that still a thing (if it ever was)?
12 passengers allowed on a tramp steamer without fuss.
No way, i love the e sys man!
Thanks!
On the largest ships I worry about metacentric height, tumblehome and windage. A beam end sea would be rough.
You should take a Viking cruise. Best ever. No kids. No casino.
A one night cruise costs as much as my new air cooled outboard that needs a boat.
thank you
My sister and her husband recently returned from a Carnival Jubilee cruise. The silly thing has a roller coaster on it.
Great episode as usual Sal.
😢
I was on the new MSC 6000 + passenger ship on it' maiden voyage in the western med. February 2020 , it's did not feel that large.
Is the Sal boat like the Love boat?
Panama canal with Sal. Would be awesome
