How Police Brutality Inspired These Works of Art

- It was 1992. Chicago artist Nick Cave was in turmoil over the beating of Rodney King. Sitting in a park, he noticed a twig on the ground. It was discarded-a symbol of how he felt as a black man in America. This small branch would inspire the creation of a wearable sculpture-a protective second skin of sorts-made entirely of twigs. He dubbed it a soundsuit. Since then, Cave has made hundreds of soundsuits out of metal, fabric, beads, buttons and other scrapped materials. Here’s how he uses these works of art in collaborative performance projects exploring racial injustice and empowerment.

Jonathan F I believe the one who respond the comments wasnt that 11 year old, but rather Great Big Story admin. the limitation on comments to me is only to hide the negative reaction to that video. besides if you want to interact with the kid, you can search his name on Instagram and social media.

I studied Nick Cave at school. He was an icon to us young sculptors and if people didn't know one of THE most well known and influential living artists today. Then I say the high dislike count and then I saw some of the comments and straight up, y'all are just not informed. Making a joke about how he was inspired by a twig is like going up to Brancussi and saying his work doesn't look like a bird. Like you're hating on a guy who isn't on the come-up...like is in the fucking textbooks already. The dude has a studio with 20 something employees and one of his sculptures sells for a minimum $100K

There is nothing wrong with him being gay or dressing up or even doing performances. Police brutality can be quite a problem... But I really don't get how these suits are related specifically to police brutality.
It's personal and cultural expression. If one can arm themselves with culture and confidence, one can tackle problems therein.

From what I gathered it’s a metaphor for the voicelessness that seems to come from these events happening over and over. It’s an expression of the frustration in “How loud do I have to be before you hear me?” by taking it to an almost absurd level.

Like the video... but you put police brutality in the title for clicks. I know Rodney King was mentioned. I can see how they're related but his sound suits are obviously about a lot of subjects and the his inspiration for making them was a small part of the video. Either make most of it about police brutality inspired works, or just take something like this and title it accurately like "How Sound Suits are Making a Move". I know you guys mean well, but it is misrepresentation and you got me to click because I thought the work would be primarily about police brutality. Obviously the suits are about anything NIck Cave wants to make.

he's said it a lot in other interviews! the sound suits cover the whole body of the people who wear them so that you can't see what they look like, importantly what *race* they are. the suits are "armor," they protect their wearers from the sort of looks that might get them profiled or beaten. they're bright and zany and full of material that not only respond to, but enhance the movements of the wearer, so that's what you recognize about them first: their vibrancy and personality and not their race, gender, class, etc. whether you agree politically with the artist or not, please keep in mind these were inspired by his personal experience with profiling and police brutality :)
