- Erik ten Hag needed a collective team response against Porto. He got one, it just wasn't the one we wanted. It felt like a game we'd watched 10+ times before and another 2-0 lead was thrown away in Europe.
Join Sam live as we discuss the Porto game, Ten Hag's comments after and try to discuss what will happen next with Villa coming up on Sunday.

People are saying Rashford substitution was shocking. But I think his lack of defending contributed to the 2 goals they scored. He could have positioned smartly so that those crosses won’t go to the box. Ten Hag might have scene that as a reason for his substitution. He just runs around wherever the ball goes while defending. He need to position himself smartly. He should have had a mind set like “whatever happens I will not let my man touch the ball comfortably “
Dalot's role in that wing is the issue
@@arnoldpollycarp8064 I agree. Dalot has looked all over the place this season on the left. Hes had a few shockers. Him and Rash on that wing aren’t giving us much defensively
@@glennwhitehead1178 opponent exploit the space left behind
Your wrong dude
@@arnoldpollycarp8064I think it starts with it rashford! He's always always positioned so narrow that it gives the opposition an easy outlet even if they didn't want to go down that route. And then even when rashford has been bypassed , you never see him tracking back and that has happened over the years time and again!! The player who crossed the ball for omorodion was free because rashford let him go and rashford was jogging behind him with no urgency even when he was beaten and going on to cross. Rashford is a big problem in that team! Happened under ole(that game against arsenal where he allowed the cross that caused the equalizer), happened under rangnick and it's happening under 10hag. Rashford can't be bothered to defend.
How can anyone say the Rashford substitution was strange?? He was absolutely awful for the 2 goals we conceded, there has to be some consequence for the lack of hard work and commitment shown by players. They can't keep getting away with it.
The media is the real problem with Manchester United. You always try to find faults in whatever the coach does and constantly push for his sacking. Rashford wasn’t tracking back, which contributed to two goals, yet many of you were previously saying the coach should never play him again. I don’t know what more this coach can do to satisfy you. You’re always trying to create issues between him and his players. Please, let the team do its job without this endless criticism. I don’t know when all of you in the media decided to become coaches
🤡

We are in a routine now, it’s not a surprise anymore! Same with Ferguson, except our routine was winning then!
Yes I remember it well..took Ferguson a lot longer than two seasons to build a dynasty that would dominate for two decades..give ETH time..
Wasn’t our routine in fergies first two seasons tho so thats kind of not the same as Ferguson 🤣
There is no process. "Process" is just a word he throws around when he doesn't know what else to say. He knows he's cooked, it's just a matter of when he's fired now not if.
Haven't u guys seen that most of our goals conceded are coming from dalot's side because of this inverted full back role? I personally think that it works if u have midfielders who can boss and controll a game. We currently dnt have that n i struggle to see why Eric ten hag still persist with it. I'm tired of this process that he keeps talking abt yet we can't see it at all. That stubbornness will be his undoing.
I think it’s the other way around. We need Dalot to invert because we don’t have the midfielders to boss the centre. Eriksen can exert some control in a deeper role when we have the bodies and that’s what he did, he was our only outfield player that did their part.
If Dalot doesn’t invert we can’t beat the press, look what Liverpool did to us. And we can’t really invert Mazraoui because Amad inverts higher up the pitch and we’re left with a very narrow shape, we’re really narrow as it is.
Rashford skill set: run fast down left wing at fullback, cut inside, kick ball towards goal, 99 times out of 100 nothing happens. Avoid tackling, pass badly, sulk. At his current wage packet he's getting about £2,500,000 per goal. Insane.
Brilliantly put by the man once again .. 👍👍👍
Nothing wrong in subbing Rashford. Instead of having of having just 1 fully fit player for Villa match now we have 2. Both Rashford and garnacho are strong. Don't scrutinize every single decision that eth makes. I think we're bringing our own people down.
We'll have to hope you're right
Sorry Sam, I know that Bruno has given us good moments in times where the team was playing terribly but we need to talk about him! And let me assure you, this isn't reactionary-I’ve had my doubts about Bruno for quite some time now. First of all, let’s look at his supposed two biggest strengths: leadership and chance creation.
I grew up watching United during the Ferguson era and caught the last 2-3 seasons when Roy Keane was captain. To me, *that* was a leader-someone who inspired confidence and embodied true leadership. Sure, he was fiery, which sometimes led to red cards, but that’s the kind of fire we need. By comparison, Bruno’s "fire" is arguing with referees over EVERY. SINGLE. CALL.
I remember one of our recent games (I think it was against Palace). We were still chasing the win in the 91st minute, and Bruno went in for a tackle near the sideline, which led to a throw-in. The ref gave it to Palace, and I kid you not, Bruno argued with the ref for a good 40-50 seconds over this trivial situation. Instead of letting it go, getting into position, and trying to create a counterattack, he wasted precious time. I saw a tweet that mentioned Bruno covered the most ground in the Premier League in 2023, and the top reply was, "Yeah, but 90% of that is spent chasing officials." I chuckled because it’s true.
Doesn't he understand that constantly antagonizing officials, they might-consciously or not-start becoming biased against him? After four years of arguing with every Premier League ref, this has to affect how they treat him on the pitch. Another thing that detracts from his leadership is the constant flopping and time-wasting. Every time he’s touched, he collapses, looking for a foul or a yellow card. That kind of conduct isn’t fitting for a Manchester United captain.
And don’t get me started on his chaotic pressing and passing. If I see him attempt another one-touch, long ball in the general direction of our wingers, I’m going to lose my mind. When we’re losing or the game isn’t going our way, his worst qualities are amplified. He starts whining, flopping even more, and abandons all tactics, resorting to “Hollywood” balls.
As for his supposed chance creation, I don’t think this stat passes the eye test. I struggle to recall many chances Bruno has created in our games. Keep in mind that he takes every corner and free kick, and if a teammate even heads the ball toward goal, it counts as a "chance created." We get 7-8 corners and free kicks per game-most of his chances must come from these. Honestly, Eriksen seems to take better corners anyway. I’m pretty sure we’ve scored 2-3 goals from Eriksen's corners this season, compared to zero from Bruno’s.
Sadly, I don’t believe Bruno is truly world-class anymore-at least not compared to his time under Ole or other current top players. Or maybe he is, but at the bottom of the world-class ladder. I struggle to see which top team would take him right now. If we offered to swap Bruno for the best attacking midfielder from Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool, City, or Barcelona, how many of those teams would be okay with that deal? To me, that’s the real test of whether a player is world-class.
Honestly, if Bruno were playing for another Premier League team, most of us would probably hate him-or at the very least, be annoyed by his on-field behavior (he seems like a nice guy off the field, to be fair). I’m at the point where I wouldn’t care if he were sold tomorrow. I don’t think he’s the right player to be the focal point of our attack. Thankfully, thanks to INEOS recruitment, we now have other options.
As for ETH, I think his tactics make the team less than the sum of its parts. But we have to stay optimistic. Football is always one good manager away from a comeback. Look at Barcelona under Xavi, Bayern under Flick, or Leverkusen under Alonso. Maybe our next manager could be our turning point. I know we’ve said that about every new hire, but at least now, the behind-the-scenes staff are actual football people and not Glazer accountants.
I TOTALLY AGREEE!
Bruno is a hidden problem in our team, and he's the one we play so chaotic in the front because that's where he thrives the most! We relied too much on him, and once he doesn't deliver, we get punished for it.
@@momen156Wow you actually read all that? damn!!! 😂
Truly crafted.
@@tolulopeisaac200 Thanks
@@momen156 Yeah, yesterday he messed a simple pass around minute 4 in the game...
Ten Hag fighting for his job, sees Rashy not fighting. Knows more goals will come for Porto unless he brings him off. Sends message to rest of team too. Cant take Dalot off as we didnt buy a left back deapite me crying for one since beginning of summer. It's simple Sam, come on dude.
Time for Harry Amass
Really good goals? I wish I could watch the games through your eyes, because it sounds like you're having the time of your life.😂
The whole team should defend, but this team, and especially Rashford, are terrible off the ball.
Cant even get angry anymore 😒
Fact
😅
It wasnt so much rashford didnt track back. He kept drifting inside leaving a big area un gaurded
what worries me is that EtH came with a pedigree. highly tactical, promoting youngsters, successful (dominated Eredivisie and performed great in UCL)... it's not like he was a charlatan without any experience...
the squad is different now than when EtH came, but problems are the same. As you said Sam.. Villa is highly coached team. I get that Emery is a great tactician, but he also had massive issues at Arsenal and Arsenal was abysmal at the end of his era and Artetas' start. How is it possible that different 3 managers (Ole, Ragnick, EtH) can't coach a squad in united to do effin basics of football... in 4 years?
Win first then rotate once game is secure.
Trust the Process. I’d love to know how you define “process” because I haven’t got the foggiest which begs the question does EtH?????
Don't underestimate the difficulty of United going to Fenerbache and facing off against Jose.
“The monkey set the forest on fire, but who gave the matchstick in the monkey's hand?”
This applies to Glazer giving powerful contract to Ten Hag, where he had all the say in recruitment & appointment.
This squad is worse than Rangnick with £600m spent. TEN HAG GONE OR STAY - STATE OF SQUAD IS NOT RIGHT.
ARTETA improved the squad every season.
He damaged it more every season.
Top MISTAKES BY TEN HAG
1)Board very early inquired about BASTONI. As per Simon Jones. INTER MILAN quoted £50m price tag.
But our Manager was waiting for FDJ & TIMBER.
TIMBER signed new contract. Then LISANDRO signed after ARSENAL bid.
BASTONI OVER.
LISANDRO only good in first season of Low-Mid Block. He is good in the ball. But have many cons. He can’t push the line. He’s overly aggressive, makes unnecessary fouls, not high volume passer like BASTONI , VAN DIJK. No aerial threats. No recovery pace.
For KLOPP, VAN DIJK push the line high up.
2)Two established wingers in RASHFORD & SANCHO.
3 decent from the bench wingers in ELANGA, AMAD & PELLISTRI. GARNACHO was good in pre season.
Even then he pushed for ANTONY even for €100m.
Board never rated him. But TEN HAG pushed for him.
3)Before ANTONY, Board inquired about SESKO.
RB Salzburg wanted unrealistic £40m for talented striker. That stage Ten Hag wanted ANTONY only
But next season club paid DOUBLE THE VALUE of HOJLUND.
SESKO potential is much higher than HOJLUND.
HOJLUND got one advantage - SEG Agency.
He didn't BELIEVED in clubs SCOUTING NETWORKS & DATA. SEG (Ten Hag agency) was SCOUTING for the MANAGER.
4)This one is GENUIS MOVE-
DE GEA agreed to sign new SHORT TERM contract at LESS WAGES. He was about to join the team. 3-4 days before he’s told to not come.
Signing ONANA could have been postponed for next summer.
Now look at Ten Hag genius - FRED Gone, SABITZER Gone, SHAW injury prone, MALACIA yet to train. No RUNNERS. & He decided to change his style to high line pressing style of KLOPP.
Signing CHANNEL defenders on the agenda - TODIBO was push down to sale of MAGUIRE.
5)After Signing or Even before HOJLIND & MOUNT. He was well aware of availability of KUDUS. He trained KUDUS, he knows KUDUS. But he preferred to replace DE GEA.
In end of transfer window he fought with Board to sign one more Ajax player (either KUDUS or GRAVENBERCH). But Why not prior to ONANA or MOUNT.
6)Fans complain about STRUCTURE.
Everyone knows TEN HAG playing style is more similar to RANGNICK & KLOPP. - HIGH PRESSING HIGH INTENSITY.
He NOT EVEN MET RANGNICK.
7)If TEN HAG wanted to change his style halfway the summer transfer window. Why OVERSPENT on MOUNT Obsession.
Without sorting out CHANNEL DEFENDERS.
8) BOARD didn't wanted TEN HAG INFLUENCE in the SIGNINGS ANYMORE.
They offered him a new contract with MORE FOCUS on COACHING & LESS in SIGNINGS.
But, TEN HAG didn’t wanted to GIVE UP HIS SAY IN RECRUITMENT.
It DIDN’T WORK OUT.
They ended up TRIGGERING 1 year EXTENSION.
9) OBSESSED for AJAX & DUTCH players still there in TEN HAG.
DE LIGT was again not good signing. He can defend the box but he can't pass under pressure. He NOT BALL PLAYING CB. He’s more DODGY than MAGUIRE. He reminds of ERIC BAILLY. He constent HEADERS but very DODGY.
BRANTHWAITE would have costed same - package wise(fees+salary). At least he’s not DODGY like DE LIGT. Very good Channel Defenders + Box Defender. He Could improved many of flaws in current system.
He absolutely changed Everton game on his own in 1 game he played.
10)ZIRZKEE might be a good 9.5 or ST he is.
TEN HAG signed him but he still didn’t have the idea of how to play him.
11)With ONANA, new manager is BOUND to NOT PLAY LOW BLOCK. In Low block with ONANA HANDLING he will give tap ins opportunities to CROWDED BOX OPPOSITION.
12) LISANDRO & CASEMIRO are not bad players. But they have no MARKET VALUE LEFT because of DISJOINT between RECRUITMENT & TACTICAL SETUP.
DALOT inverting leaving LISANDRO ISOLATED.
CASEMIRO is exposed since TEN HAG system after 2nd season (DE GEA left)
Once Ten Hag said "Guardiola misjudged physicality of Premier League in his first year at Manchester City when he completely underestimated the power and speed of the Premier League"
But he himself ignored whole world of players & yet not over Ajax in 3rd season. Signed De Ligt.
He made numerous bad decisions. Thinking behind every recruitment was very ONE DIMENSIONAL. There is no way back for him.
TEN HAG digged his own grave.
And not just his grave. He also digged the club’s grave.
WORSE SQUAD IMPROVEMENT AT £600m cost.
Boo hoo if it was that easy every manager wouldn't be having the same problems.
C’mon. Dalot is playing out of position. The ultimate problem is the club’s willful negligence in getting a true left back.
Finally someone with common sense. And add to that actual good midfielders. Eriksen & Casemiro are old & while it’s still too early to judge Ugarte, he seems so 1 dimensional. Lastly, for a Captain, Bruno has to have more discipline.
Go watch replay on the players reaction after Maguire scored the equalizer in extra time... They were totally nonchalant (Casemiro, athony etc.) They had given up and I don't mean on the match. The majority of players have given up on the SITUATION in the club with the current coaching
I've lost count of the times ten Hag has said "we need to do better". United commit the same patterns and mistakes time after time, and all we have is "we need to do better".
Let the team set up in a 4-4-2 and then say "play it as you see it" would likely yield better results and performances than the crap that is currently being delivered.
Actually its 5 European game-we conceded 3 against Sevilla if you remember
Fair enough if Eth wants rotation. But at half bloody time? To rotate a goal thread that will hurt your opponents? Crazy!!
I've been defending Ten Hag for a long time now but his tactics last night broke me. He should get out. Sack him now. He's lost it. Why was Dalot playing as midfielder and Porto were finding space on very same side he wasn't occupying. Sack him now
You are part of the problem
Because we need him to or we won’t beat the press. I see your reasoning, but that’s a conscious choice to solve a personnel issue with tactics. I’m somewhat lenient towards both Dalot and ETH on this particular issue.
Fair play to Maguire for 3 years of destroying the football club
Mazaroui needs to hold the line when near half line
Is it actually Rashy’s defending to blame or is it midfielders are that usually overly aggressive on the attacking end and exposed on the defensive end. Also don’t forget that Martinez’s height has always been a liability and attacker know to target him. This leaves De Ligt who is not that much better either in the air despite his height. Rashy could have done better but he was so so explosive on the attacking end that a midfielder should have given him cover on the defensive side a few times.
For all utd fans it's frustration, disappointment at the moment. But we all have the mentality that utd can wi the next game , unfortunately at this point the team don't have it.
Sam = Legend
Delight, needs to be ball side on the head ball goal against us.
Sam and uptv people's. For the deep dive on the "process" go back and watch R.Betis home 22/23 season. It was shown b4 the Porto game on MUTV and the difference in the team was insane. If the "process" is to break Man u down then we are right on track. The biggest and most expensive project in world football derailed by changing everything apart from the main issue. I never realised the amount of work and time Fred brought the side. Considering we had the luck of two world class additions from the academy it's hard to see how we could of ruined the side any further without willful destruction. ETH should have gone last season the FA Cup final just happened to fell lucky in the rotation b4 an international competition, players had things to prove to international managers
Good morning. Sam its the same about man United
People who are confused why we were upset for playing Rashford and not taking him off but now we’re mad at the opposite…come on. Before we were pissed because he was hurting the team because of his lack of good form. So he SHOULD have taken him off. Now when he is starting to be the most threatening player going forward, he takes him off? That’s why we are pissed because he’s making the same mistake, just in reverse when his form is changing
It’s beyond me why they renewed his contract, it’s obvious he is out off his depth. On Sunday the whole team was a yard of the pace, he’s gotta go…
29 shots and you blame the manager ?. 😂
Totally agree! Moyes 2.0 unfortunately.
I can’t think how our new executive suite hasn’t chopped him already - other than the panic of another big manager payout and the embarrassment of backing him after another god awful season and a lucky FA cup win.
Err yeah….
It was 2-2 at half time. So he didn't have to take rashford of we needed him and garnacho to go at porto.not Antony
Or is it because we don't have a natural left back fit?
Im a 10hag inner but i also don't care if he's changed, but i dont see anything improving because those players are not fighting for each other! Every single time rashford, and sometimes garnacho , get beaten, they just give up and dont bother trying to recover! Their attitude stinks and they need someone tough that wont take that rubbish from them! Those players are a disgrace!
That's what you get for taking the captaincy from Maguire. MUs defense is horrible and having a captain in the defense would be better then giving it to Bruno he contributes nothing except negative behaviours. His performance is getting worse and worse
I’m convinced we’ve been defrauded by Ten Hag.
He conned a new contract
He’s now conning his way to a big payday by repeating the same nonsense over and over again and not learning from his cycle of silly blunders.
Out now.
In his first season Ten Hag didn’t make all these mistakes. He was a manager who made in game adjustments, compensated for his players deficiencies and handled the issue with Ronaldo quite well. Second season everything fell apart, I believe it’s because of how they got rid of David DeGea. He fell out with all the players and the football has been dire since.
United were dominant over Porto..29 shots on goal to their 14..we had nearly 60% possession with far better passing accuracy..fans need to get behind the team and the manager and stop complaining..we will turn it around soon.
What if theres something mental issues with Rashford? We can not demand to know everything. Just a thought.
ETH issue is complicated to my candid option. The coach or the players? Who's fault?
Just accept yall were wrong about backing ten hag. Simple
Every team knows how to play against us because of ten Hag never having the ability to change!
The inversion of the wingers and fullbacks is clearly not working!
Sack him now!
We surely can’t keep defending ten haag now it’s become ridiculous. Hes been given time & money to at least get a style of play implemented and he hasn’t done that. Yes sometimes poor performances have been due to individual mistakes but some of the tactical decisions from the manager have been shocking & it’s week in week out now. Hes out of his depth I don’t think the players respect him or are even scared to play bad because he comes out with excuse after excuse.
By now I don't really care about Ten Hag in or out, but this will continue without him until our players start playing with some passion. They have a dream financial lifestyle and play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, but act like it's just another day at the office. It is absolutely despicable the way these dudes take it for granted. My student who is not a Man Utd fan basically recognised a lack of passion over the games he has seen recently. We are ok-ish with the ball and terrible without it. Bruno is stupid and petulant and not a great captain, and why can't Zirkzee and Hojlund pllay together?. I'm done!
Is this "process" somewhat akin to our universe? As in maybe infinite?
Where was ugarte he is the defense midfielder
@@bernardburns8087 same place as he was against Tottenham. Nowhere…
Back the manager
He needs a structure
He's suffered because of the injuries
Ten hag glazers did everything they could to defend that bald fraud
And y'all are still doing it
A coach standing on the sidelines seeing the obvious issues and not fixing them is a clear reason he should be sacked
I’ve been a big big big supporter for bruno and his creativity. Now he’s clearly a nuisance. Two red cards in a week? I’m sorry but this is getting out of hand. I think Bruno needs to be replaced.
Bench the player who does not play good even if he is Bruno even he is Rash. Bruno out
Y'all make me laugh. So many of you will be disappointed when we're lifting a trophy or two at the end of the season, and the "bald fraud" is still here 😂
