- Digging a fish pond in the Northern of Canada. Help the channel - HIT PLAY AND WALK AWAY! Or get a snack and learn from what worked and what didn't when you built this natural trout pond on an extreme budget. 155-Fish Trout Pond!
We use a massive excavator to dig out our clay based trout pond so that we can add hundreds of rainbow trout! If you want to learn out to dig a huge trout or fish pond dug or other kinds of excavating this is for you. My Gear (Shop and Support): www.thewoodedb...
The fastest way to dig a big pond is to use the help of a qualified excavator. This excavator normally digs out house foundations and the operator has years of experience digging giant holes in the ground and removing mountains of material.
In the previous episodes we measured water quality of our fish pond for oxygen and water temperature. This pond was also monitored year round to see if it holds enough water and has the depth the fish need to stay cold. Rainbow trout need good to excellent water quality and plenty of oxygen. Water flow is an asset to help fish spawn. We discovered that the water in our pond is filled continuously with the help of ground water and is very cold, even in the summer. Trout will die if water gets above 25 degrees Celsius. Shade also helps keep water cool and our pond is sheltered for a good part of the day with trees.
You will need to find out what kind of soil you are working with. Is it clay, clay-loam and sandy loam are best for holding water. You will want to avoid limestone, shale, sand and gravel-they leak. Except in our case since the gravel is actually part of the ground water, which is ideal. You can ask around to find out if your pond will leak or will hold water year round. You don't want your pond to dry up in the middle of the summer.
Our plan to excavate the remainder of the pond, pushing the size out to about a half acre in size and a water depth of around 8 feet. 15 feet is more ideal, but our base is shale and therefore can not be dug any deeper.
A trout pond is very difficult to establish, but it is very possible to do correctly if you know what the fish need.
Aeration of the pond is something we will be exploring as we see how the season develops. We are hopeful that water remains cool so dissolved oxygen in the water remains high.
After we dig the pond, we will let is sit for a few weeks before putting our fish in the pond. Ideally you will let the pond sit for a full year, but we are not patient enough for this.

Your pond level is too close from the water surface to the dirt. If you want a better pond, it should be 4 feet tall from the dirt to the water surface.
And some algae bloom is a sign that you need seaweed from the bottom of the water surface where it
gives off natural oxygen and plenty of good microbes to thrive over the bad ones.
As for the purity of the pond, there is a guy who has the natural formula to purify rivers and oceans.
He's popular from NasDaily. You can do research on him. He's Japanese.
Ngl, also a little bit of poop can purify the pond as it contains nitrogen and phosphorus.

Awesome show thank you. Full Stop Again🛑🛑🛑
This is great. I can add this to my commute playlist. I love the long videos to keep me entertained during my commute.
I hit play but I ain't walking gonna watch and learn. I thank you and your son for your teaching.
I sure learned a ton!
Man, I wish we lived in Toronto with all my girlfriends family. You’d be so close I would offer to come help build everything with y’all. I love doing this stuff and I got 10 years experience.
Hey , pond guys, you need to add some current to your pond to help control the algae and spread the oxygen it also helps in exercising your fish. Just an internal water pump can cause the current you need. All natural ponds that hold Trout have some kind of inlet and outlet that causes current it will also help keep your water cool
5 years latter here you are building your pond that is awesome you guys are amazing
Well done. You men did an amazing job. 👏 👏👏💯
Brilliant video my man ❤
Guys I used Aluminium Sulphate in swimming pools in Australia for 10 years or so and had great success mixing the flocculent in warm water and pouring it into the pool.
This method allows the mix to spread over the surface and as it cools it will then do its magic taking all the suspended matter to the bottom.
With pools we would then vacuum all that sediment out to waste.
Hope this info helps.
Cheers
Greg
You're going to be amazed at how clear a waterfall with a filter will make a pond
A labor of love. Liked seeing "little Holden" and the puppy too. Full stop.
Awesome show thank you. Full Stop Again🛑🛑
Another great video. Right in my back yard. Will definitely have to take my kayak over there and check it out! Thank you!! ❤
Thank you Chris for sharing this with us I absolutely enjoyed every second of it. I hope one day I can do similar project.
Loved the video. Inspiring even, great job.
Great effort getting the water so clear!
I am loving the beardsman re-edits. I have been watching since I was in college during the mid to late twenty teens but the normal videos have too much long talking without scene changes for my kids to stay interested. They love the re-edits.
Ya, the reedits move quick! Hoping they can engage the younger viewers.
Next the aluminum sulfate in a 3 gallon spray bottle one of those pump sprays mix it up good and then spray it all through the pond everywhere I think it'll mix in better
These long format vids are my favorite!
Enjoy!
Chris and Kevin…you should hold a sweepstakes to subscribers to spend a weekend in the Cube, Sugar shack or the expanded main cabin for maybe $1000 dollars or maybe $800……I would pay a $1000 to be there for maple sap season….FYI
Awesome show thank you. Full Stop Again🛑
Man all the time you guys put into that pond hope it works out might want to watch those pallets
YOU'VE NEVER SNORKELS WITH CAMERA 📸 THAT'S A MUST DO AND WATCH 👌🤠
Awesome show thank you. Full Stop Again🛑
Full stop mate!❤
Remembered the hard work you guys put in this build.
So wonderful, my boy. Level❤❤❤
Lots of work on that pond 😂😂wow😂😂❤
I have watch all these videos on both chancels Your and Kevin's. Very nice to see as linked in a one time sitting
Brilliant video guys
Dude I am so excited to see the waterfall, especially if it’s like a big cascading waterfall the easy thing about them is that you can buy 13 x 60 pond plastic and legitimately make that happen with ease by just using your excavator piling up a huge amount of dirt, I would’ve done that right where your reservoir is first so it’s away from your home so you can see it when you’re in your house. I wouldn’t put it facing away from your house. There’s no pleasure in that you wanna be able to see it from the windows, my personal opinion.
If you're gonna do any catch and release, you can mark the fish tail fins with a hole punch. Fun science project for the kids!
I REALLY enjoyed this whole video!!
We did 3 yrs of minnows. Then fingerlings for a couple of years. They ate minnows instead of fish food. Took a while, but great pond. Crappies also were great.
im watching this and its 30 degrees Celsius
i wanna go swimming
Put gravely in your pond because of the clay❤❤😊
It should say mix the sulfate in a 3-gallon spray bottle Pump It Up good and spray it I think that'll work better than throwing it in the Wind
The WB is back!
Wow....kevin has loss a lot of weight. Hope that he is ok. Chris, I must tell you that we were watching the video where you talked about deers being carnivous a couple of days ago. When you said if deers could only hunt with weapons....that was hysterical....we are still laughing, just having the vision of that in our heads...too funny. Deer hunter. That pond is going to be so cool.
Full stop!
I wood make a stream off the pond back into the woods
The spring will only fill it so far so if the a way u can make a drain off at that level so there is water moving out at all times it might clear up a good amount
You may try adding some native water plants as well as some beneficial bacteria. Both of those options will help with both water clarity and quality.
Yeah great video Tormund! lol jkg!
Make SURE you guys put in Mermaids,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Dammmmitttt.
Test the water perimeters. For ammonia, nitrile, nitrates. High nitrates cause algae blooms . High ammonia and nitrites cause breathing problems with the fish

Why can't more people do this to are land..ponds its great for the habitat and wild life and fish for your self.. everything benefits from it...looks great pal
Agreed. Very little downside to putting a pond in. Animals love it.
Sometimes its cold inside the exscavator with the door closed..with the door open sometimes its more comfortable lol
Make a self stocking video trap minnows snails crawfish, etc, to add to the pond ecosystem .u can order live scuds online.
Would love to see yall make an artificial stream going to it instead of a waterfall
1:57 I'm watching your 3:57:49 long BUILDING a small cabin in the WOODS from 5 ye ago. I'm just concerned about your dog's paws. Making sure they were not affected by all the cold and snow. How is your dog these days, please? Nice build, too, ok?
Do you get hedgehogs your way
Nope. Only in pet stores.
Trout? Thinking? Sturgeon, tiger muskies paddlefish
First one to be here🙂
I wonder if you get like one just one grass-eating carp
Howdy, partner?🤠🤠
3:03:09
I saw on UA-cam a guy in some other country has a trout pond he has some water going to it
Can you put snailes and little suckers to help with the water for parisites
Suckers might silt up the bottom and kick up the clay. I thought about that and minnows but I don't want any carp accidentally get in there and ruining it. So need to be careful. Most other fish don't care, but trout like clear water.
Do you aerate the pond ?
Yes.
I wonder if you get like a wheelbarrow load of those oxygen pellets except the fish eat them and blow up
To build a pond without a natural contributory is a folly, when it comes to salmon or trout.
You should see how healthy they are. The natural springs work wonderfully.
@@TheWoodedBeardsman
Excellent!
The magot box almost made me want to throw up
Is this video old?
No Sir.
Technically yes, It's just parts of older videos put into a long format.
