An interesting fact is that the actor playing the Polish King Władysław II Jagiełlo (Emil Karewicz) also played a German officer who was unable to write the name Grzegorz Bręczyszczykiewicz.😁

The film is an adaptation of the book of the same title. The chapter about the battle is faithfully written based on the chronicles of the historian Długosz, who lived during the reign of the son of the Polish king visible in the film, so he had access to the direct memories of the participants. Therefore, it is considered that the version in the chronicles reflects the events quite faithfully. The battle was the largest battle of medieval Europe. It became the beginning of the end of the Teutonic Order and brought the Polish-Lithuanian alliance into the period of its greatest power.

The historical and political context of the film is worth highlighting. the film was based on a historical novel from 1900 (btw., the author was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1905), which was written in response to the aggressive anti-Polish policy of Prussia at the time. the film itself turned out to be relevant for the reason that the continuity between the Teutonic Order, Prussia and the German Reich was not a historical abstraction, but a political and social concrete. From the Polish point of view, German arrogance remained unchanged for more than a thousand years. Even the oil painting 'Battle of Grunwald' from 1878 was sought by the Germans during the Second World War, who wanted to destroy it, because this battle stopped the expansion of the 'Teutonic Order' and consequently also the Germans in this part of Europe for many centuries.
If it was only about the largest battle of medieval Europe, Polish cinematography would not have involved such large resources.

The Battle of Grunwald was fought on July 15, 1410 between the combined Polish-Lithuanian-Tatar forces (approx. 30,000 men) and the Teutonic Order forces supported by many volunteer knights from Germany and other Western European countries (approx. 20,000 men). It ended with a great victory for the Polish-Lithuanian-Tatar forces. It was a great defeat of the Order forces, which lost 70% of its high brothers and approximately 14,000 men. After this battle, it never regained its power and ceased to be an equal opponent for Poland and Lithuania. The flags visible in the film are not flags of countries but banners symbolizing the feudal territories and cities from which the knights came. At that time, the knights were loyal not so much to the country but to the ruler who granted them lands.

Unfortunately no word?scene about a heroic resistance of "our" Smolensk infantry, holding its ground despite great losses, nor a mention about the forces of the Great Novgorod (Nowogród Wielki), administratively under Lingwen of Lithuania, a relative of the Polish, Lithuanian de domo, king. Probably politics.

As for the appearance of the fighting sides, you weren't the only ones who had a problem with it. The armor and weapons of both sides were basically the same, only the monastic brothers were distinguished from other knights by their white tunics with a black cross. However, they were only a small part of the Teutonic army. That is why banners and the colors and symbols placed on them were so important on the battlefield at that time, which allowed to distinguish individual units. When during the battle the most important Polish banner was captured by the Teutonic Knights, it was a very dangerous moment for Poland, because the disappearance of the Great Banner could be interpreted by the rest of the troops as a signal to retreat. During the battle, the King of Poland also ordered the Polish-Lithuanian forces to gird themselves with bundles of straw to distinguish them from the enemy.

As for fragments from famous Polish historical movies, I recommend the scene of the sabre duel between Michał Wołodyjowski and Andrzej Kmicic from "The Deluge" (1974). This scene is widely considered to be the best representation of a real fight with bladed weapons in the history of world cinema: ua-cam.com/video/ljExTEPNFnM/v-deo.html Actors Tadeusz Łomnicki and Daniel Olbrychski trained for this scene for half a year, and it was shot for several days in streams of water imitating rain.

There were no flags there - there were banners. Poles and Lithuanians were on the left and the Teutonic Knights on the right. Teutonic knights were dressed in white capes with a black cross.
