A bass that grabbed a bluegill I was reeling in is the biggest bass I never caught. lol That fish grabbed that bluegill and hung on for dear life. I got them up close enough to the dock I was fishing on to see that bass had a mouth that looked like a 5 gallon bucket. When I got em up close enough for them to see me that bass decided that was enough and he let that bluegill go. The bluegill was a nice one. I bet that bass was at least 8 pounds but I'm probably being conservative. It was a 'hawg'.
Then he grabbed my cousin's bluegill not 5 minutes later and he lost him, too.
Thanks so much, Richard. I drop what I'm doing to go fishing with you every time.

Fly fishing departments have all sizes of miniature floats. Richard, I was at Guntersville Lake week before last and fished the precise place you fished the week earlier from the bank. The only difference is you caught some nice crappie and I had one 6 inches long. We arrived with all the Alabama tornados and a ton of rain that muddied the “creek” up quiet a bit. You know the saying “You should have been here last week. I look for you.

My similar story. I took my best friends sons fishing. I took them on the boat to a timber point mid summer to catch blue gill of a nest I’d found. I had all kinds of gear with me. Water was clear and sun high. 91 degrees. Water temp was 78. Thermal line was 12’ from top and thats where those blue gill were hanging out. We was dropping hair hooks down with 1 /16 split shot and piece of live worm and catching slab blue hills every cast. I knew they was easy and fun is why I took the man’s kids there so we didn’t get skunked on mid summer day blue sky. Well as the 6yr old was reeling in his blue gill I seen a 10lb large mouth swing at it around 6’ down. Water was so clear I could see down pretty deep. As he raised the blue gill, I grabbed my blue cat rig out of the rod rack as it was all i had rigged up. I had like 8/0 circle hook and one ounce no roll on it. 65lb braid all the way to hook. It’s not a bass rig to say the least lol. But I grabbed it up and took his blue gill off and popped him on that 8/0 and dunked right back down. About time the live blue gill went out of sight I felt him run hard and than a hard thump. I gave it some slack for about 5 seconds. Knowing I’m on a 8/0 circle hook and I can’t jerk. So I eased the pressure on against the weight of the fish, loading the rod up good and tight and that I stuck it and the fight was one. She had that 7’6 limber cat rod bowed up!! I let her tire a little for a second a bring her up. Being in 65lb braid I just swing her up in the boat. Was the biggest largemouth I’d ever seen in person. I let her go to fight another day. I did take her down about 100 yards to get her off my blue hill honey hole tho. Lol
And before anyone says something about me using a live bluegill as bait, and makes themselves look dumb.
“Code Title 9 - CONSERVATION AND NATURAL RESOURCES.
Chapter 11 - FISH, GAME AND WILDLIFE.
Section 9-11-90 It shall be lawful to use the following species of the sunfish family for bait in the streams and waters of Alabama: bluegill, redear sunfish, green sunfish and/or any other species of bream.”

Use live and cut blue gill in the pond I fish. Both of my PB largemouth were caught in that pond on live bluegill. I’ve caught blues, channels, bowfin, largemouth, gar, and Buffalo on bluegill I swear by em’. Took my buddy from the north fishing one time his eyes popped out of his head when I put that circle hook thru that gills back, eyes popped even bigger when he saw his first bowfin.

This technique works great up north when the water is cold and the fish don’t want to move. It’s been a pretty cold spring where I live and this technique seems to be one of the few that work right now. Good stuff!
