Michael Jackson became the lead singer of the group at age 5 after he brought the school falculty to tears when he sang "Climb Every Mountain" at a school recital. Once he joined the group he was rehearsing every day and joining local competitions, others in further cities and many in other states. He never had formal vocal training. It just came natural to him. He was the very definition of "prodigy".

It did not come natural. His father would severely beat him for hitting the wrong note or missing dance steps. Micheal was literally brought up in a slave home and conditioned for perfection as a toddler.

@@HiImBeans Joseph could beat MJ all he wanted, but if MJ didn't have innate talent it wouldn't have miraculously made him a stellar singer. Yes, MJ was treated extremely harshly as a child and it affected him the rest of his life, but that treatment didn't give MJ talent.

@@Yensid98 Yes, he was talented. But you saying everything was natural takes away from the truth. A LOT of his talent was refined through punitive and corrective beating. Joe Jackson didn't just spank or yell at him. He beat his ass like a grown man.

@@HiImBeansTHANK YOU. Too many seem to forget that As an adult , Michael would Cry during interviews recalling his mother begging Joe to stop the brutality, wailing” stop! Yes. Even though, the teen performances of MJ is crazy good still. It's a bit weird almost that MJ didn't have cock-ups during live performances and could do studio work with complete voice-control. I mean, MJ never took a break. Like took a year off to let their voice go through it's natural developement in good time. Or take a couple of years to singing in a more limited range song style. Like Got To Be There, Ben, Music And Me and Forever Michael are very VERY challenging song- and not least range-vice. Same with the J5 work during that same period.

@@elsaanderson1176 well there were periods specifically around 1975 where his voice was fully changing where he struggled with his old songs especially live and his voice would strain or even crack at high notes or he would avoid the hifgh nots all together and they had to lower the pitch for a lot of songs. he regained control of his voice agian in the late 70s and early 80s, you cyan tell especially on the thriller album that he had finally found his adult voice and style.

What’s so crazy to me is the way he was always able to emote the lyrics in any song. At such a young age even if I could sing it sure wouldn’t come across as so heartfelt. He was truly passionate for music because he couldn’t possibly understand the realities of the song yet the way he always delivers is just astounding.

Please don’t forget that he spent a lot of time watching other grown-up artists perform after or before their own performance. He said himself that he learned observing the masters at work, and then turning that into his own style. Two of his idols were James Brown and Fred Astaire, for instance. So even if he didn’t understand the grown-up lyrics, he was inspired by the way others did it, and that certainly helped a lot to develop his perfect phrasing. That and hours after hours of relentless rehearsal.

When his voice changed they just lowered the key half a step to match his new singing register so that he could still hit all of the notes. The beauty about Michael is that even as an adult, he still could sing really high and also had a falsetto register that he could use to hit some of the higher notes.

  • @-breakofdawn-
    @-breakofdawn- 2 роки тому +9

He was 11 at that time (that particular show took place on December 14, 1969), and he had already been singing and dancing for 6 years at that age. Most of what you’re hearing is insane natural talent plus the long harsh rehearsals by a strict father every day. That’s the reason why he always kept stressing that he had no childhood. After he went through puberty, he tried to sing in a heady mixed voice at first (Rock With You, Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough), so the fans would still make the connection between the child star and the grown-up. It didn’t take him long to create his own singing style with his trademark gasps, his raspy belting, and his hee hee’s, and people loved it.
As for your questions how you teach a kid to sing like that at such a young age - if there’s no natural talent, then you don’t. You can’t. I’ve worked with kids for almost 20 years, and among other things I taught them music - if you want to teach them rhythm and how to clap or stomp different beats, you usually cannot do it properly before the age of seven. They’re simply not ready earlier, developmentwise. As for singing, I find that many still struggle with hearing and singing on pitch at age 11, the age Michael was in this video. There are exceptions, obviously, but these facts just to help you appreciate his god-given musical genius even more.
The 60’s through 80’s, and part of the 90’s, before the invention of autotune in ’97 and heavily computer processed voices that have nothing to do with singing skills anymore, was a fantastic era with many great artists and fantastic live concerts. That was still real music back then that you could enjoy, and I was happy to see that you both did. Thank you for a great reaction!
Oh, and btw, anyone that likes to bash Michael for singing playback during some live performances, and particularly the ’97 leg of the HIStory tour - they should watch this video of the Ed Sullivan Show to be reminded that he already had perfect pitch, perfect technique, and total vocal control at age 11, you don’t lose that as you get older. Most of the time he would use playback for parts of a song only, but do ad-libs and endings live, and he was so good that people barely noticed the difference, and had a hard time telling what bits were live and which weren’t. The reason for the playbacks wasn’t that he couldn’t deliver - it was his perfectionism. His dancing was always live after all, but in ’97 he was almost 40, and at that age, despite the many years of training, your body’s stamina simply isn’t the same anymore as it was in your twenties. He still wanted people to have the perfect experience, so he saved his energy by not singing live AND dancing for two hours straight anymore for an average of 80-120 shows per tour. Who can blame him? So I hope after seeing this reaction and especially ”Who’s loving you”, people will give him a break and remember what a one-of a kind genius he was.

First, all Jacksons have soft voices. Listen to Jackie or Jermaine. Michael's voice wasn't so high, as you indicated. He CHOOSE to speak in a higher register, but his singing voice was different. He could sing high and LOW.

    • @-breakofdawn-
      @-breakofdawn- 2 роки тому +4

He could sing high and low, and his speaking voice was also low if he CHOSE to allow it to be natural, and if he felt comfortable and in his element. Listen to his short speech before Heal The World at the Superbowl for instance. That’s his natural speaking voice. He always (subconsciously) raised it and spoke in a higher, softer voice when he was self-conscious or felt shy. One of my favorite songs entirely in his lower, chesty register is ”2000 Watts” from the Invincible album.

    • @-breakofdawn-
      @-breakofdawn- 2 роки тому +2

Way too young to die, I agree. Although he didn’t want to go back on stage again. This is it! was forced on him. He only agreed because they asked for 5 shows at first, then raised that number to 50 without even asking him. He was desperate, knowing there was no way he could’ve done that many shows, having never fully recovered from the toll the 2005 trial had taken on his health. He’d been working hard for 45 years and wanted to retire, be there for his kids, and work on new material. He lived and breathed music, so I’m certain he still would’ve kept creating, but performing live was not what he wanted anymore.

It's still weird to me that we live in a world without Michael... For 25 years of my life he was EVERYWHERE and he had already been big for 20 years when I was born.. It's inane..
I'm Norwegian but I was in Amsterdam on holiday when he died.. After babysitting my friends tripping on shrooms I went for a walk and In the park at 5am I found a Norwegian newspaper with Michael's death on the Frontpage.. We had just learned about it a few hours earlier..

Yup, my hometown. They lived two miles from me. We all loved to watch them so much. He was truly VERY GIFTED. When I go and visit Gary I stop by their home. It was sooooo small and to think 9 kids and two parents lived in that shoebox.

I am 2 years to late for this, but I do wonder if you ever checked out Jackson 5 stuff from when he was a teenager. Cause his voice is actually just as wonderful. Deeper, obviously but still wonderful. He basically sounds like the Michael Jackson WE know just in a group. I know they had a variety show at one time, that was probabaly another reason why didn't release as much music in the later years. Their Destiny album is amazing though (I think that was their last album as a group).
If you haven't yet, check out "blame it on the boogie" and "Can you feel it."

There were 10 Jackson siblings, Rebbie the eldest sister and child, Jackie the eldest brother, Tito, Jermaine, LaToya, Marlon and his twin brothers Brandon who died at birth, Michael, Randy(not the same from American Idol and then a following a five year gap Janet. Rebbie was all ready married when her brothers made ir. It's the five eldest boys who make up the Jackson 5, when they left Motown Jermaine stayed and Randy took his spot and they became the Jacksons. Janet was 2 when her brothers became famous and made her first tv appearance at 5. She doesn't remember life before they were famous. Since her dad was always on the road she didn't suffer the same abuse the rest of her siblings did

This appearance on the Ed Sullivan show was in the early ‘70s, not the “60s. I know this because I was born 1 year before Michael Jackson and witnessed his entire career in real time. I learned how to dance because I was so inspired by the Jackson 5.

This performance originally aired on Sunday, December 14, 1969. I was finishing my first semester of high school, and still remember how amazing it was. The video clip being reacted to here doesn't include the final moments, when Ed Sullivan introduced Diana Ross, who was in the audience, and credited her with bringing the Jackson 5 to national attention. An airing in the early '70s would have been a rebroadcast.

the group was together through Michael's teens, after his voice changed. after awhile the group wasn't doing very well, but Michael solo was on fire. if you want to see him do the old songs as an adult watch their performance on the Motown 25 anniversary special. All five brothers get together and do a medley of their early hits.

Michael Jackson was known for occasionally slurring his words in certain parts of his songs, but still managing to sound good. He did this to add his own unique style or sometimes simply because he didn't care. This is my personal observation.

there was the Jackson 5, The Jacksons, Micheal Jackson, Jermaine Jackson the talent of all the brothers are naturally talented. believe each of the Jackson men are each very well-respected businessman in their own right. the brothers continue to tour to this day. the military regimentation blending dance moves came from their father(Joe Jackson) and Berry Gordy(owner of Motown. The guys have always maintained that their father heavily influenced and created the Jackson Family machine. Listen to the entire Jackson 5 and The Jacksons set of music, OMG♨ these young men were doing things no other group in the history of music were doing. eventually, they left Motown to write, produce and arrange their own music.

A couple of things to say. Ed Sullivan was always a stoic host, but he was extremely powerful in the entertainment business, and his show reached millions of households around the world, so he could be still look like that. Secondly, how they addressed Michael’s voice changes that they wrote songs that matched all of their voices, and whenever they performed the old songs when they were grown men, they of course would change the key.
