Three years later I wonder if Paizo took this comment to heart. Hobgoblin's currently have the most ancestry feats outside of core ancestries. They also have the most level 17 feats in the game, somehow.
Currently running a 7th level Hobgoblin Investigator with a Marshal dedication. VERY effective non-magical buffing and debuffing. He calls out weaknesses from his recall knowledge checks and intimidates enemies with dread marshal stance and demoralize checks.
Hobgoblins have been a standard PC race in my home games since...2001? I've developed entire hobgoblin societies and empires. They're one of my favorite civilized humanoid enemies.
Same here haha, in my world they're basically right up there with humans and elves as far as prevalence in the world. They're basically the upper class of goblinoid society, with normal goblins being a failed attempt by ancient hobgoblin mages to create a new race in their image
DM: Wow, are you sure you guys are fine without a dedicated healer in the party? Players: Yeah, we all decided to roll Hobgoblins, so we're good to go!
Love the video and I really enjoy Hobgobblins getting some love in the spotlight! And I have one minor thing to note as I am a eternally cursed GM and rules lawyer! Mental damage isn't (as far as I can find) non-lethal by defualt, sure a lot of feats and/or spells have the non-lethal trait making those instances non-lethal. Daze and Phantom Pain being non-lethal and having the tag aswell, but Phantom Killer does not have the tag so it wont deal non-lethal dmg.
Azaersi stole the Onyx Key from the Dwarves of Kraggodan which is how they have access to the Plane of Earth. That is where the last feat comes from. I'll get you those Pathfinder lore stories one day.
Haven't started yet but I'm currently about to start a long-term campaign with a Hobgoblin Swashbuckler. Going for intimidation tank. The idea being that I draw fire through agonize and the other affects I can add to intimidation between the class and the race.
I'm currently playing a Hobgoblin Champion/alchemist, he's super caring and lovable to the rest of his party, but the moment he's in battle he turns monstrous and terrifying with intimidation. He's been a huge amount of fun and a very unique character.
Azaersi is a she. Also the Onyx key and the plane shift to the plane of earth has nothing to do with hobgoblins having an inherent magical connection to it but instead a connection in the Pathfinder Lost Omens lore; specifically it relates to the events of the PF1e Ironfang Invasion Adventure Path. Oprak young nation of hobgoblins in the Inner Sea region; it covers a region only 300 miles across but also extend into the plane of earth by way of the Vault Onyx Citadel. The Citadel is connected to Golarian via the Stone Roads, five entrances to which can be found across Oprak.
7:38 it says you treat martial hobgoblin weapons as simple weapons for the purposes of proficiency, so shouldnt it still increase as you increase your simple weapon proficiency?
Played a Hobgoblin Champion in book 1 of Age of Ashes and had a really good time with the ancestry! It was the class that I got a little bored with, unfortunately.
My go to was actually a hobgoblin ranger named Kharr 😅 He had a love of pickles, stabbing enemies, following orders, and learning about the strange non-militaristic society of the outside world
I'm actually playing a Smokestack hobgoblin inventor and went looking for videos to help get into the right headspace for it! We def need more hobgoboin love out there lol
I could see Hobgoblins working in a war themed campaign where they build an army to conquer elves. Other than that I'm not sure how they could be integrated.
For sure, and this gives GMs some really cool options to build custom NPCs with these feats. Especially in that war-like setting where you may be fighting multiple different Hobgoblin Generals.
One idea is that you were a member of Ironfang Legion whose unit was stood down during Azaersi's enforced peace and now you are an adventurer to keep your skills sharp and earn recognition to help climb the social hierarchy. Alternatively you could be separated from your original tribe and now work as a mercenary.
Hobgoblins should be viable for Goblin Feats. Also, Hobgoblins always make me think of Samuai (fighter) and Ninja (rogue). Ninja Hobgoblin would focus on Poisons and Dextrous maneuvering in combat. Samurai Hobgoblin in an O-yoroi with a Glave and chained weapons, focusing on Intimidation. Sexy.
I'm playing a Lvl 7 hobgoblin aberration sorceress and having a blast with it. Being a member of a culture that just abandoned the very cause for wich they where created and now have to build an actual society that does other things than eternal warfare is an interresting problem to have. That said, having a hyper militaristic worldview as a sorcerer shakes things up quire a bit. So, fear and demoralization effects are what holds that build mechanically together. Also: Tentacles! But yeah, a few more options featwise would be nice.
One of the 5 PCs in the Extinction Curse game for which I am GMing is a Hobgoblin Barbarian. It is looking like he will be heavily investing in Intimidation. With a Bard and a Wit Swashbuckler also in the group, anticipating lots of vicious mental debuffing of enemies.
I had a hobgoblin alchemis in pathfinder 1E and he was glorious he was the party's combat healer and high flying bomber with his flying carpet shaped like a bat
15:00 Azaersi is female and that feat is straight up easily explained from the character's story and the Lost Omens setting. pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Azaersi
So...I just realized that Hobgoblins have the Goblin trait (but not the hobgoblin trait...). On a relatively rude RAW, does this imply that they can take Goblin Ancestry feats? (And perhaps not Hobgoblin Ancestry feats?)
alchemical scholar saves you 4 gold at level 1, 165 gold by level 10... If you're GM is following the treasure by level table and you were planning on spending gold on formulas regularly, this translates to slightly more than 10% extra gold each level. Most levels are exactly an extra 10%.
This is the second time I come across someone saying mental damage is non-lethal. Now the spell Daze says its non-lethal but I can't find anything that calls out all mental damage being non-lethal?
That's because I'm a fool! I was so used to Daze dealing non-lethal mental damage that I just assumed all mental damage was non-lethal, which is not the case.
Oh, interesting, I must've been confusing it with something else, because looking into it, I can't find it either lol. I think my mistake is because Illusions usually deal Mental Damage that happens to also be nonlethal.
Hobgoblins can be fun, due to their more disciplined nature they're not as flavourful as the basic goblin, but they're cool. Rolled a Hobgoblin Alchemist once and you can get a ton or formulas with the right feats. So a bit more serious than the goblin, but great if you want to be a more ruthless goblinoid with a bit more edge.
I'd definitely let my players use the formation feats with any humanoid. At worst I'd make them take some downtime to "drill" and learn to act as a formation
A couple years late lol but Azaersi is a lady and the reason you don’t see primal connections is the artifact (Onyx Key) is what gives the power, not some inherent connection to the plane of earth
Hobgoblins are rather interesting. Their teamwork focus is quite different, and I like it. Out of curiosity, what Ancestry are you most looking forward to from the Lost Omens Ancestry Guide? I'm really excited for Androids. I'm hoping for a Rocket Punch. Also, Hobgoblin, Leshy, and Lizardfolk should be getting more feats in the Ancestry Guide. Don't think Shoony are though, sadly.
Fantastic! Another update video I'll need to make next year 😂 Honestly, I don't know Pathfinder well enough to want any specific ancestry. Just something cool and interesting, honestly!
@@Nonat1s Well, we do know of two major Ancestry batches. In addition to new ancestry feats and heritages for existing Ancestries, the Lost Omens Ancestry Guide provides: Androids, Fetchlings, Fleshwarps (I have so many questions, lol), Kitsunes, and Sprites (Pixies and Gricks), plus Genie-kin Versatile Heritages. The Lost Omens Mwangi Expanse guide, a guide focused on the titular African-themed continent is giving us: Anadi (Spider People!), Conrasu, Gnoll, Golomas, Grippli, and Shisks. So with weapon familiarity it says for the purpose of determining proficiency the martial weapons are considered simple, and advanced weapons are considered martial. Do they not progress with your class weapon proficiency’s? I thought the Weapons discipline and expertise is encase you have a class that doesn’t get access to these features. For example a rouge only gets crit if the target is flat-footed, and they never get access to martial weapons, and if they do it doesn’t progress. If you use a martial heritage weapon it’s now considered simple for the purpose of proficiency. Then if you take weapons discipline you now can access critical specialization on any critical hit, not just a flat footed target. Have I been reading that totally wrong???
Lowkey, a hobgoblin bard who plays battle-drums could be super rad. Let your GM homebrew it so that your "Drumsticks" are two clubs and a drum strung around your neck on a band would be really cool!
Hobbies have always been my favorite race to play as, with Duergar as runners up. I am also the only person I know that have ever played them regularly, as far back as AD&D 2e. Some of paio's prerequisites are questionable. There are a few feats for classes that require being trained in the class' key skill. Like Alchemist Alchemical Savant having the prerequisites Trained in Crafting.
