That brings back memories. I didn't enter into the contest but I remember them running ads for it all the time. I'm going to have to look up and see if they ever officially picked a winner. Cool that they at least sent you something.
Totally ! He was absolutely amazing. "Now - I- am Master of the Universe !!" // I read that Langella actually said it's his favorite role ever (that he played). Great classic
Not even a mention of the most important reason to watch this movie. Evilyn's arresting eyes. Meg Foster (has the most compelling eyes in Hollywood, okay Karen Black's eyes are also interesting) is super good in this film, and indeed, has some of the best lines. "I see only a human female, it must have been she who tipped the balance against you."
How was that his low point it wasnt like he was a big moviestar or anything. He could barely speak english his biggest role to date was in Rocky IV and he only said 3 words.Im not sayin ur lying its just funny he would say that
IIRC Langella expressly stated he did it for his Kids, combined with the Freedom to 'ham it up' made it one of the more 'Fun' jobs he ever had... as to Lundgren I think it might have been a case of teaching him that he should have better picked his roles... the fact that he was so new, and suddenly the lead, on a troubled production (over budget, no 2nd unit, studio meddling) he might have felt more of the stress at the time... - MotU was only his 3rd film... and if you look a lot of his work after that (save Maybe Punisher '89 and Showdown in Little Tokyo) he switched to either Villains or Direct to Video 'gun porn'
just watched it for the first time last night and i was Blown away, young tom paris saving the world from aliens, im 31 and i thought it was amazing. LOVED IT.
Thank you for not complete bashing this movie , this is one of my favorite movies of all times. Just found your you tube channel, love all the videos I’ve watched so far .
@4:20 moving from California to NJ... yea, loads of folks do similar things when cost of living is too high and want to move someplace where rent is far cheaper
I remember seeing it in the theater as a kid with my dad, having the same reaction as you, "Why the different characters who weren't in the cartoon and why the hell go to Earth, when Eternia is a lot more interesting??"
In the most recent release of the film, both Frank Langella and Dolph Lundgren expressed their appreciation for the movie. One unfortunate thing is that Langella, who was in top shape at the time, pushed for a big fight scene to be included and he and Lundgren worked on it for awhile only to have it end up a much shorter fight to cut costs at the end of filming.
Probably one of favorites growing up. At my local video store I remember the poster at my local video rental store with the review "The STAR WARS for the 80's !" Although I'm glad that sequel didn't go through looking at MacGruder there who would've replaced Lundgren. They also used sets from Cannon's never made SPIDER-MAN along with the never made MASTERS sequel to get CYBORG made. I had read elsewhere Lundgren was early at one point supposed to do the sequel. And co-star with Jean Claude Van Damn was also to have a role in the project to boot. The two were friends ,and had always wanted to collaborate on a project together. It never happened until UNIVERSAL SOLDIER though.
I only know this because, despite growing up in the 80s, I just finished watching this movie for the first time today. Her parents were the only people in the plane. Her mom mentions everything will be fine because her dad is a good pilot. She also grabs maps along with his keys. One can assume he has a small two person plane. So no need to warn anyone else.
the one thing about the ending of the movie that i always find fascinating is that a year later from the last scene the two characters will be doing a back to the future 2 type of story only there prior knowledge of future events will change every thing i'd love to that as a sequel
its so weird seeing castle greyskull so large... when I was a kid watching the origonal I swear I thought it was 3 rooms...walk through the door and theres her throne on top of a stair case, her bed room and I guess a small room attached to that where the magic swords come from.
I've become addicted to your videos, and love the random jokes that really catch me off guard. You deserve a billion likes, and a billion - two subscribers!
Thanks! I know they were hoping to do a sequel and there was so much they could have done. Oh well. I've heard they are planning a big budget reboot but somehow I think it won't be as much fun as this.
I've been wanting to do Cyborg for a while but I have so much on it I know it will be a very long episode. (I have the director's cut originally called "Slinger" which you can only get directly from Pyun) American Ninja is totally coming at some point.
Subscribed! Some great info in this. Never knew that The Sorceress went on to play Monica’s Mum in friends! Or that the failed sequel sets were reprised for JVVD’s ‘Cyborg’. I loved this movie as a kid and I think it doesn’t get the love is deserves. Langella was absolutely fantastic as Skeletor.
Thanks! I think he just got stuck in that "tough guy" role even though he had some good acting chops and was way more intelligent than people knew. He should have at least been in some bigger action flicks. While some of his movies weren't the best, he was always good.
I remember reading somewhere that a lot of this movie feels like a homage to Jack Kirby's "New Gods" characters for DC Comics... Skeletor=Darkseid, etc... At any rate I remember seeing this in the theater as a little girl. Wasn't there a scene where Courtney Cox or Tom Paris got some kind of green goo-burn on their arm? I remember freaking out about that...
The new G. I . Joe was well under way before He-man burst into the scene, but He-man did influence the cartoon and the replacement of Hawk as their field Leader. Duke was designed to mirror he-man, including the goofy grin.
No no no nooo Cecil, the names were clever. They were. As much of your videos I watch and the many times I go through your list I still find something awesome that I miss. You effin' rock! Lastly, I think looks wise Evil-Lynn was perfectly cast. I can't see any other face in that row. Oh yeah, another thing. Wouldn't you have loved to have seen Cringer/Battlecat? Good or bad?
I remember begging my dad to rent this for me, when it first came out on vhs, as I was a huge He-Man fan, & I loved it. Funny how I never thought about Orco not being in the film, until you brought it up on this video, lol. LMFAO, oh man, I used to have a wacky wall walker!!
The soundtrack really is amazing. It's one reason why this is still a guilty pleasure for me. Also, why the sets & effects still look so good is because you're looking at what was going to be 'Superman 4' s budget.
Four of Skeletor's best men can't catch one girl, that was actually one of the more accurate aspects of the movie. Those guys went to a special school for villains. #HannaBarbarasSchoolforAspiringVillains.
watching this vid gave me the greatest nostalgic feeling ever. this film was was one of my favourites as a child, right besides Willow and The Golden Child.
I had this movie on VHS when it came out for it. I always thought it was the greatest movie ever and then I didn't see it for 20 years and as a adult I was like what the hell did I just watch it wasn't as good after as a grown man
Not doing the whole episode with the workprint, just going to use it for reference. The quality is pretty bad. I cleaned it up a bit but still it is taken from his VHS dailies so the quality is not good for mass consumption. So, I'll do the episode with the DVD and then for the history of the film I'll cut between the DVD and the workprint.
I've always enjoyed this movie, no matter how campy it actually was. Little details like using music to open portals with the cosmic key, or the "food on little white sticks" and being disgusted that it used to be an animal (I'm not vegetarian, I just thought it was a cute reaction) made the movie for me.
9:07 I always thought her parents were flying a light aircraft. Graveside scene: "It's my fault they died." [..] "We were all supposed to go to the beach that day. But I said I had to study because I wanted to spend the day with you. So they took the plane to Catalina instead." It's not conclusive (and it's also five minutes of my life I'll never get back... ;-)
the mercenary with the white hair named Karg, reminds me of iron maiden's eddie and here in Austria Van Damm's movie was named Universal Soldier (also in Germany)
Good review, I loved this film (and the animated show) when I was little kid. I haven't seen it in years, after watching this review I will be buying the DVD.
I love that movie. Yeah, some cheezy points, some issues - the "new" characters addressed quite logically towards the end - but overall I loved it. Of course the critics spat venom on it worse than poor Kobra Khan ever could... That, in case you weren't being sarcastic, was the action figure guy who got the "Red Shirt" treatment, he wasn't a new character but one of the "Serpent Men" - I had the figure, loved it. Spray gun head to squirt watery spray. After about a decade the spring wore out and couldn't replace it... Wasteful to red shirt him; he sprayed a venom that made people compliant, good strategic character for instead of a hit (in MOtU figure role-playing) that just lets the other character slug you back and most figures you sneak and try to take out are an order of power better than him so he'd lose you got an extra figure on your team - he's worth a "Prime" character if done right - pretty good for a 3rd rate character... I'd like to see "Rulers of the Omniverse" made into a movie! ---heh, anyone know what I'm reffin' ? Serious, anyone loved the old He-Man - might check out the graphic novel "Kapatara" about an astronaut who gets sucked into a universe seemingly inspired by this kind of toy line. And unlike the cliche hero out of water in Sword and Planet world he does NOT want to return home. Uh, he's Gay, but they don't make it gross or that blatant.
Another stellar job with the review. This is the first film my parents ever bought for me..and it was on VHS..and I have cherished this film ever since. Sure it's corny, and full of cheese, but it's entertaining..and to be honest this is the only exposure I had to He-Man..other than the annoying kids yelling his name at a birthday party in Ghostbusters II..I think this film actually does some things better than the show did..namely Skeletor..he is actually intimidating. "Good Journey!"
Interesting side fact, He-Man was inspired by Robert E. Howard's (creator of Conan the Barbarian fame) original barbarian hero Kull the Conqueror, this included both the main villain Skeletor who was based of Kull's somewhat re-occurring enemy (until he killed him anyhow) necromancer Thulsa Doom who's head like Skeletor was a skull (a version of this villain made it into the Conan the Barbarian movie played by James Earl Jones but sadly without the Skeletor skull-face :) ). They also drew on the idea of a previous snake people of the evil snake god Set that ruled the world prior to humans (or Eternians I guess in He-Man world) which can re-appear as a current threat (and constantly shown with Skeletor's base as Snake Mountain) particularly in the He-Man reboot series of the 2000's. Of course the He-Man series added the futuristic elements and was kid orientated unlike the pulp fiction Kull stories which had allot more violence and some nudity (though much less then the later Conan stories, Kull being written as a character who unlike his successor was uninterested in sex, but only battle, He was also somewhat more intellectually curious then Conan, but it was with the Conan stories that Howard really struck a cord with the pulp magazine audience).
No. Kull and Conan did share the same universe, but NOT the same time-period. Kull, an exile of Atlantis and king of Valusia, existed in a continent and kingdom that was at least a thousand years BEFORE the Hyborian world of Conan. Kull was one of Conan's predecessors and, as I recall from the original Robert E. Howard stories, was MENTIONED in Conan AND in one of the stories of Solomon Kane - AND he made an appearance in one of the stories of Bran Mak Morn. Thulsa Doom appeared in the Conan comics, from the old Marvel series of the 1980's, where he had served as an uneasy anti-hero ally to Conan and Red Sonja. In the original REH stories, he only appeared in ONE story of Kull - but, he DID have a skull-like face.
Just rewatched this movie and realized her parents were on a private plane. The mom says that the dad is a good pilot when Julie begs them not to go at the end, so it looks like they were the only ones who died. Otherwise, great video. This is one of my favorites on your channel. Love this movie and I actually think it kind of holds up decently decades later.
One thing I never noticed before, but did in this review, is that Man-at-Arms' costume, actually has a lot of its tradtional detailing in it but in black rather then his usual colors; making it look like a "stealth armor" version of the character.
I always figured Gwildor was from an episode of the series I had missed. Hate that they changed the look of the characters so much but at least it stars The Greatest Starfleet Pilot EVER, *Thomas Eugene Paris!*
Thanks!
Meg Foster's eyes are amazing. She looks like she could see your soul.
I know its a old post but your right. If i had eyes like hers id stare at people all day n not blink, creep them the hell out lol
That brings back memories. I didn't enter into the contest but I remember them running ads for it all the time. I'm going to have to look up and see if they ever officially picked a winner. Cool that they at least sent you something.
I really loved Langella's performance as Skeletor.
Yep, he really gets under the skin of the character.
Totally ! He was absolutely amazing. "Now - I- am Master of the Universe !!" // I read that Langella actually said it's his favorite role ever (that he played). Great classic
I make fun of this mvie but god damn it shows that he really enjoyed it and I totatly apperciate that.
Frank Langella was so amazing as Skeletor. One of the best villains ever. Seriously. So campy, yet so cool. Hats off to you, Mr. Langella.
It's cool, too, that he has always taken pride in the role; he did it for his kids and has never put the movie down in interviews
8:27 "When I think evil, I don't think giant golden guy"

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.

"I see only a human female, it must have been she who tipped the balance against you."
It's funny Dolph Lundgren considers this his low point, when Frank Langella has said that this was his favorite role to play.
How was that his low point it wasnt like he was a big moviestar or anything. He could barely speak english his biggest role to date was in Rocky IV and he only said 3 words.Im not sayin ur lying its just funny he would say that
99% of Frank Langella movies suck ass.
I also think lately too he has come around to accepting it. I've heard of fans asking him about it lately and he seems good with it.
The only other thing that Langella is popularly known for is that Dracula movie of his.

8:27 - I'm pretty sure Horus and Abbaddon would be more than happy to tell you about "big, gold evil guys."
Probably one of favorites growing up. At my local video store I remember the poster at my local video rental store with the review "The STAR WARS for the 80's !" When Skeletor pops up at the end I swear to f*** he looks like Jack Palance.
My mom saw me watching this and said "I don't remember Jack Palance being in this"
Bill Nighy as vampire from the Underworld
@@bliiblaablue um nostalgia critic joked that skeltor looked like John mcaine

Perfect.

Thanks! Frank Langella made for an excellent Skeletor. Much more maniacal than the cartoon. (I love both though)
I had a bunch of the action figures but never had Castle Greyskull. Always wanted it though
I fell in love with Evil-Lynn when i first saw this movie...
I appreciate the support! Spread the word!
I love the little comedy bits you put in, they make the videos soooo much better!
Extra points for the CKY(2k?) Skeletor clip. Me and my friends ended up ruining the CKY dvds by watching them so often, some good memories
Thanks! People seem to forget just how popular He-man was back then.
I loved the new villains. Blade and Saurod especially. Was great to have new toys of them.
Another great video! I got the chance to meet Meg Foster about a year ago. She had so many funny stories about this film.
its so weird seeing castle greyskull so large... when I was a kid watching the origonal I swear I thought it was 3 rooms...walk through the door and theres her throne on top of a stair case, her bed room and I guess a small room attached to that where the magic swords come from.
Love the movie. Frank Langellas performance as skeletor is awesome. Meg Foster is great as well.
Interesting. I don't remember the comics well enough, I didn't read very many of them. When I was younger I was more into GI Joe comics.
I love the scene where Skeletor's army marches down the street and there is NO ONE outside. I love this movie so much.
Thanks! Always happy to hear that. :)
I've become addicted to your videos, and love the random jokes that really catch me off guard.

the beverly hills cop music for the key bit had me in stitches.......bravo!
Thanks! I know they were hoping to do a sequel and there was so much they could have done. Oh well. I've heard they are planning a big budget reboot but somehow I think it won't be as much fun as this.
Even though they had pretty much all the supporting cast? (Teela, Man at Arms, etc)
OMG!!! This is the first time in 20+ I've heard Courtney described as "The dancing in the dark girl." Thank you for that nostalgia.
I still love this movie, and you rock for the Axel f theme

Btw meg foster who played evil lyn did not wear lenses, her eyes are really like that.
As a kid, I thought Meg Foster in this role was alluring AF.
But her eyes really did weird me out.
Sure. And also all women are virgins and never have plastic surgery or dye their hair either.
KanishQ Quotes wow, first thing I thought was cool contacts.
KanishQ Quotes -Yes, she is known for her eyes. That is the main reason, she had gotten that role.
She was in “They Live”, as well.
Gorgeous!
Meg Foster was perfect for Evil-Lyn. Her eyes are chilling. Great review. This brought back so many memories.
"Gwildor's a drag queen. I am not surprised." Best line of the review.
I know I'm little late, but how have I lived without you in my life?!
The casual "Tom Paris" reference was stellar! 😉
You should check out Showdown in Little Tokyo. Dolph with Brandon Lee, Tia Carrere, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as the bad guy.
This is a guilty pleasure film of mine. :)
Thanks! I think he just got stuck in that "tough guy" role even though he had some good acting chops and was way more intelligent than people knew. He should have at least been in some bigger action flicks. While some of his movies weren't the best, he was always good.

Good review indeed, lots of good information, try and add some humour in like the big channels do and I could see you becoming quite popular.

They were in the same universe and time period. Conan also had Thulsa Doom for a villain, in the novels, and sometimes the comic zine.
One thing I never noticed before, but did in this review, is that Man-at-Arms' costume, actually has a lot of its tradtional detailing in it but in black rather then his usual colors; making it look like a "stealth armor" version of the character.
wow, good stuff! I love this movie though..., I still remember when my Mom took my brother and I to the movies to go see it! fun!
I had some of the Sectaurs and the comics too.
brings back memories. you da man.
Frank Langella was the best thing in He-Man! The guy just owned the role of Skeletor!
I always figured Gwildor was from an episode of the series I had missed. Hate that they changed the look of the characters so much but at least it stars The Greatest Starfleet Pilot EVER, *Thomas Eugene Paris!*
