I see others have already mentioned it, but I bought an 0450 titanium recently (July 2021) and the pocket clip is more than half on the frame, so I don't have the issue of it pressing on the frame lock. I agree with others who have said it's like a 940 flipper. Also, the first time I held it the handle seemed cramped, but after using it with my pinkie finger "on the hump", it actually feels pretty nice. S35V, titanium and made in the USA for this price? U betcha!
I have the 0450 with twice the serial number of the one in the video and it is very different in the frame lock cutout and the clip. First the cutout. At 15:59 you can see that the cutout ends (under the clip) with a large elongated hole and some knurling or other texturing on the frame/frame lock (also under the clip). The thin line of my cutout just ends with no hole at the end of the thin cutout line. As for the pocket clip, mine is angled more toward the back of the knife so it rests entirely on the frame, not the lock at all. If you hold it up to a light, you can see that it doesn't make contact with the lock but does rest on the frame. So, it's good to know that ZT is willing and able to make improvements on even an older knife design. The serial number on mine is over 36,000 while the knife in the video is over 18,000 so I have no idea when the improvements were made.
I’ve made some upgrades for this knife: 1) ceramic detent ball (little tricky to replace) 2) “tacobearings” ceramic ball bearings 3) “mxggear” titanium standoffs 4) “mxggear” titanium miled pocket clip Now it’s almost perfect knife
Curious about the ceramic detent ball upgrade, wanted to do one myself on my ZTs but not sure how to. Did you use any special tools or just a hammer and a rod? Thanks
need hard skills to do it. unscrew lock bar insert, then cut small horizontal groove in the middle of stand and then push out steel detent ball from inside
Pocket clip can easily be swung off the lock bar. The holes in the clip are larger than the screws so there is tolerance there. Had to do it on mine and it also adds that canter that people like.
I have the CF version. Really a great knife. The S35VN on mine is fine. And while not my favorite knife, if I had only the 0450 to carry, I would be totally satisfied. Very light, very slim, looks nice enough to be satisfying. Very functional, has better cutting performance than my other ZTs.
I’ve got a newer one and they’ve fixed the pocket clip issue.. no more touching the lock! I can squeeze the clip as hard as I want without pinching the blade.
Mine is fall shutty and my clip sits half on frame so I can apply pressure to it with no problem. Mine is 4 years old, I believe so I’m not sure if they’ve changed any of it since then
Thanks for mentioning that there is a larger version! That was the main info I was seeking. I'm glad I watched your full vid though. I found out this one is not for me at all. Thanks as always!
This knife is probably one of the most durable small knives out there, feels as solid as a fix blade, probably wouldn't try to baton with it but I bet you could
Interesting timing on this vid. I haven’t carried mine in several months but took it down last weekend. It’s actioning awesome and haven’t left it out of the pocket all week!! Also cool to see how aged my scales look compared to a fresh example.
I love the design of this knife. Last week, I chose to buy the 0452 over the 0450 because I kind of liked the sheer size of it, but I would edc the 450 if i had the money to spare after purchasing the big one 😅
I picked one up from DLT today and guess what they moved the clip on a angle now, where it rests on the frame vs the frame lock. Wish I could send you a pic. Seems like they listened to their customers.
The major flaw with this model is the pivot. It has a round pivot on both sides leading to blade play over time. This is an amazing oversight on the part of the designer and also ZT who normally puts a hex pivot on at least one side of the knife. I love this knife but if you want to run it you are going to have to loctite that pivot sadly. Sucks in a way. Also the blade geometry is not a slicer grind - again a bit of a let down. Flat grind on the blade would have been so much nicer. Also the flip on mine was so hard - i rated it at an 8/10 for push effort. Again not ideal on such an expensive folder.
Especially rn since these aren’t popular anymore, blade hq discounts them pretty often. Usually around 180ish (which is definitely worth it imo) I got mine for 155 cause I had a discount code from a previous order blade hq messed up. Definitely worth it now. I remember when these first came out and were impossible to find for a long time. It’s nice that they’re plentiful today!
I handled the carbon fiber one at a Dicks Sporting Goods and I was shocked how cheap it felt and the carbon fiber was a joke for $200 it really felt like a toy. Thats what I would call overpriced, but yet people like to complain about the price of Benchmade’s 565-1 which In my opinion is 10x better knife with a much higher quality carbon fiber... I can’t speak on this variant, but if I had to pick one out of the 2 it would definitely be this version with the Ti scales.
@Northern Ninety7 I went back to Dicks Sporting Goods and took a much better look at the carbon fiber version and your right it’s just a very light knife and actually had excellent action so I take back what I said about it, but the first time I checked it out that was the feeling I got. It is a nice knife maybe a little over priced to date, but absolutely not a bad knife 👍🏻
When I first checked one out I was in to bigger knives and I was really underwhelmed with it and couldn't believe it cost so much for what seemed like so little. A little further down the line I bought one lightly used at a good price and its now one of my favorite knives to carry!
@@bryanstone654 I just used the standard factory hinderer clip for mine. I don't need it to be deep carry and the hinderer clip holds better and is smaller than the zt clip.
Where on the knife or which screw do you loosen the action with? I've had mine over a year and sometimes its very hard to flic it open? Thanx in advance and by the way I need to buy the torx drivers as well.
Lol... the on off z/t button on your scale. 😁👍. I have the g10 variant of the 0450 with an aftermarket hinderer ti style clip from MXGgear. One of my favorite knives in my 30+ collection.
I like the size but the end of handle makes it uncomfortable. I’ve owned several ZT’s and have handled many in store. There seems to be some models that are made much better then others. I’ve handled a lot of 0450’s, I always check lock up etc. On everyone, I could push lock bar over with my finger. I only own 2 now, the 0801Ti, my favorite and better then the 0562 in several ways. It has a surprisingly thinner handle and blade, nice milling and beautiful blade. The 0393 is the only other one I kept.
My pocket clip on mine lies above the lockbar so it isnt lying on the lockbar. so i have not had the issues of the lockbar being pressed closed when i open the blade like ive seen in other videos. maybe that was an update?
I've had one for a while. The holes in the clip are too big and the clip has too much play as a result. When the clip moves on top of the lock bar it keeps the blade from flipping. I tried fixing this with loctite. Not a reliable fix. IMO no excuse for this at this price point. ZT knows about this problem and they have done nothing to rectify the problem. ZT #1: We have a problem with the 0450 pocket clip. ZT#2: What's up? #1: The holes are too big. The clip moves over the lock bar and makes the action horrible. #2: Well that's not good... #1: Can we redo the clips? #2: Naw, leave it like it is, no one likes our clips anyway.
I have the carbon fiber version I need to get a deep carry clip and its not a real slicey knife but it did take a chunk out of my finger when the bar locked up on me and shut on my finger bled for 3 hours it was my first pricey knife I baught
Mine's got an MXG deep carry clip, a finger choil mod, green standoffs from the CF model, and a mirror finish edge. The only way I think it could be improved is if it didn't have a free spinning pivot
The factory deep carry clip from a Kershaw Natrix (the version with a 2.75" blade, copper scales and "D2") works on the 0450ti! The holes are slightly larger as the natrix uses bigger screws, but the oem 0450 screws nest neatly and it's quite secure without locktite. It's smaller and has a kershaw label, ideal if you want to be somewhat discreet.
I have the 0450cf I think 6 years now it's only gotten smoother and it was already smooth there obviously some wear of the black coating but always loved it
@@metal_complex The holes in the pocket clip are too large which allows undesirable clip play. The flipping action is much better if the clip isn't on top of the lock bar. This clip play shouldn't be present in a knife in this price range.
The clip resting on the lock bar isn't creating any measurable unnecessary force. The excess tension is in the lockbar itself. But ya, the clip isn't great.

The mxg gear deep carry clip is a must for this knife. Fixes all of the issues mentioned. Love mine. It’s like a 940 flipper.
i just ordered a 0450 and the guy im buying it from has a deep carry on it!!!

Similar mrbs in Shirogorov but in bronze cage. Also having thin steel washers. ua-cam.com/video/KYrEgZA1VII/v-deo.html

need hard skills to do it. unscrew lock bar insert, then cut small horizontal groove in the middle of stand and then push out steel detent ball from inside
If you had to "upgrade" that much on this knife perhaps you bought the wrong knife. Or, maybe the knife parts are not the problem here. Just sayin'
Just too let you know that the latest version fixed the pocket clip to be on the body rather than in the frame lock
Pocket clip can easily be swung off the lock bar. The holes in the clip are larger than the screws so there is tolerance there. Had to do it on mine and it also adds that canter that people like.

Thank god! I was cringing watching this cause I just bought one this morning.
@@chrisc.4517 - I prefer the 0450CF to the Bugout.
This was the knife that brought me into the knife world. I went to a trip to Puerto Rico and lost it 😞.
How did you get it to Puerto Rico? Boat?
I’ve got a newer one and they’ve fixed the pocket clip issue.. no more touching the lock! I can squeeze the clip as hard as I want without pinching the blade.
Mine was perfect outta the box very high quality. Pocket clip is fine for me
This all Ti version is much better looking then the Carbon one. Great little Knife
I handled one of these at bass pro and it was completely fall shut
They must have made some adjustments. My detent is not overly heavy at all, and my pocket clip lays 80% on the frame.
I just bought this and they’ve aligned the pocket clip so it’s not on the lock 👍🏼

This is misleading. A free spinning pivot is annoying, but it does NOT cause blade play
Just got my 450 and I love it one thing I can say is they seemed to have moved the pocket clip just a little so it's not pushing down on the lock
Received mine today and agree. Talked to ZT rep and they said that was the only update. Love the knife.

I use to have it with gold anodized titanium scales. It looked super classy, but like the trend here lost it after a year...
Looks like the newer ones have better placed clips. My carbon fiber has a weak detent and a loose pivot screw I just realized.
