  • A new meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is opening its doors in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. Located just a block from Temple Square, this unique structure is at the base of the new 95 State office tower. The development is part of a joint-use model to build meetinghouses in high-density urban areas. You can learn more here:

    I really love this design! I am also pleased to see that it is a stark departure from the cookie cutter design of our chapels that has prevailed for several decades now. I understand why the Church takes a standardized approach in our building designs, but I would love to see a revival in more unique chapels. And please, please: mid century modern style church meetinghouses! 😊

      What style is that? Explain. I hope it’s okay to mention this, but I think that some temple styles needed to be redone to better show who we are, and who we were in the early days. But temples are temples. Whatever style they choose, it should be pleasing to the Lord. That’s for sure!!

    • @churchnewsroom
      @churchnewsroom  Рік тому

      Hi Roger, thanks for your question. We recognize the symbol of the cross is used in many Christian churches as a symbol of the Savior’s death and Resurrection and as a sincere expression of faith. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we also remember with reverence the suffering of the Savior. But because the Savior lives, we do not use the symbol of His death as the symbol of our faith. We believe that the way we live our lives should demonstrate and be an expression of our faith and love for Jesus Christ. Did that answer your question? www.lds.org/topics/cross?lang=eng

    They can build new churches when theres a church on Every corner in Every neighborhood BUT CANNOT FEED THE HOMELESS. Pathetic.

    • @terryslade6240
      @terryslade6240 2 роки тому +5

      Au Contraire! The LDS church spends MILLIONS every year to feed the hungry and help the homeless become self-reliant. They own numerous ranches and farms around the globe (called "Welfare Farms") and those foods are used to feed the hungry. Many other countries' leaders have toured the LDS Church's Welfare buildings and systems and have been strongly impressed by them and by how much money goes into food and clothing for the hungry and homeless, and disadvantaged across the globe. Just about EVERY Stake Center has a Bishops' Storehouse used for helping feed the hungry and disadvantaged in their area. Besides, whenever there is a catastrophe ANYWHERE in the world, the LDS church is usually one of the first organizations onsite with truckloads of food, clothing, medicine, water, AND free labor volunteers (called "Helping Hands") and doctors to help alleviate the suffering.
      Just a tiny bit of advice: learn the facts before you set out to disparage an organization.

    I've been in a few meetinghouses outside of Utah that were primarily re-purposed buildings or sections of buildings, and it's cool that some interesting features of those are showing up here in this design. I'm the sort that appreciates beautiful design and buildings that are meant to bring people together, and I'm glad that the church sees that here. Keep in mind, everyone is welcome to come to a church when it is open, and I really appreciate that we can have these kind of publics spaces even in a downtown environment.

      Millions in food, clothing, medicine, labor, professional (doctors/nurses) all come from the LDS church. Whenever there is a catastrophe anywhere in the world, the LDS church is usually one of the first organizations on site with all these things to alleviate the suffering. Nearly EVERY Stake Center in the church has a Bishops' Storehouse, used to feed the hungry in their area. What more do you want?
      There was a woman who came to Jesus and anointed his feet with very expensive oil. Judas Iscariot quipped that the oil should be sold and the money given to the poor. Jesus answered to leave her alone, that the poor we will always have with us, but He will not always be with us.
      The Holy Ghost is always present in EVERY LDS worship service. and especially in EVERY temple. Where would you want Him to be present with the saints: in a run-down trailer?

      An excellent point, but what's happening here is part of the challenge of striking a balance between having nice buildings for all to use, and taking care of the poor. In fact, the church takes great care to ensure they give to the poor all while managing things like this building. One can have nice things, without forgetting the poor. @@Avoicecyringinthesuburbs C'mon, man, quit judging the church by saying "we simply love mammon more than God." I've attended church in trailers, and the singing was accompanied by a small programmed synthesizer provided by the church. I've also attended church in a small meeting room used for a lot of other functions; our singing accompaniment was on a small stereo with CDs provided by the church. I've also attended church in a large chapel whose membership reached 800 and there was a pipe organ in front. And just FYI, I've attended conference in the venerable Tabernacle in Salt Lake City.
      Just because the church provides lots of money (paid to the church by tithes) for meeting houses and temples doesn't mean that WE love money more than God, nor does the church leadership. I live in a SMALL one room apartment, but I still pay my tithes and offerings.
      And yes, I love my God and my Savior.

      @@livinthedream4479 Alma 32 10 Behold I say unto you, do ye suppose that ye cannot worship God save it be in your synagogues only? There really is no need for it, but there are a lot of people in need in the church regardless of the humanitarian efforts made by the church. Again, I am not the one making the accusations, the Prophets and even the Lord himself have made those accusations towards us in our day in the scriptures. The only way around it is to deny God's word.

    We are so blessed to have more churches that are close to us, so that we can learn more about Jesus Christ, our devine purpose, and destiny, and his great love for each of us! We are all so very important to him!

    Only the LDS church would be so brazen as to mix commerce with religion. Frankly, I think it’s offensive and likely a means for the church to forcefully proselytize to the employees of the companies working in that building, which are undoubtedly companies owned by members.

      I don't think so. I think there are separate entrances for the church and the office building.
      You seem to be of the persuasion that rich people shouldn't be rich. I don't think you have that right. If someone makes lots of money and invests wisely, there's nothing wrong with that. Christ himself said that (parable of the talents).
      Besides, a LARGE percentage of the population in Utah ARE LDS and yes, those members own buildings and businesses. If you go to a predominantly Catholic community, would you say the same things?

      Tithes and offerings by church members help feed the hungry and disadvantaged. Besides, Utah tax payers' money also goes for the homeless and hungry. I think the church even does more than the State does, but the church can't do it all.
