This song could be released today and would be a huge hit. It really is timeless. The video of course has timestamps but it was really high tech for the time, with trippeling MJ and the green screen working into the stage set. It's interesting that you see the decor as something you recognize from the 70s/80s, because to me (who isn't USAmerican) that is a rather timeless esthetic of the song, like the visualistion of the sound of the percussion and falsetto and the tempo. And then it's Michael just adding that magic quality to it all. Like in the beginning with the twinkeling night sky beyond and Michael talking about the force (STAR WARS Ep IV having come out two years before) of love that fills one up and connects us in an irresistable way, I still can't watch that feeling it's timestamped (I mean I see it, but I don't see it) because magic can never be timestamped. And yes. This was a far more unburdened Michael Jackson than later. Jeeze, no one shoud have to carry the load this person had to carry, being put through the trials this person wereput through. A 1/10 would have been far enough for anyone to handle and more than most could have. So, relatively to later, MJ was unburdened during this time period. But, not to be a downer, this was a very burdened MJ. This was a person suffering from depression, stressand anxiety, from severe loneliness, being isolated, hungering for the basics of life and being under strong pressure from everyone around. A person who was just starting to find out what the concept of friendship was, having only had collegues and family up until that point. Some friends in school maybe, but not many being both extremely shy and not having any sparetime to develope friendship in; also being away from school much touring with a private tutor. Someone starting to realize exactly how much they'd missed out on in life and that some of it might be too late to really fix, too late to "fit in". Being much younger than most in age-appropriate social experiences, but much older than most in professional experiences and in knowledge of how to mold one's craft. Never having hung out in the local mall or spent the day at the ball park, but having travelled not just every corner of the nation, but the world. Now the family dynamics had changed, much of the family had married and moved out and left MJ behind, being a 21-year-old not having an easy time finding same aged people who would connect to them as a person, as a friend. Michael was reduced to wander their neighbourhood for hours, hoping to bump into someone to talk to, to befriend. Someone, anyone, who was looking for a friend in Michael, not a celebrity. When MJ was asked about leaving home in an interview in 1981 (23 years old), MJ answered "Oh, no. I think I'd die on my own. I'd be so lonely." On top of that, MJ was carrying much of the weight of the group, not least on the business and creative side of things, while at the same time needing to shoot out on their own, to make room for their own project as a solo artist. Not feeling there was enough of themself going around, it was a quite heavy burden for those slim shoulders and MJ was very stressed. And moving into adulthood, turning 21 MJ had to end the contract with their father as manager and "Trying to fire your dad is not easy." (Moonwalk). One day in -78, Michael had a blood vessel burst in the lung due to pleurisy, and was asked by the doctors to slow down a bit, but didn't due to a schedule and commitments that wouldn't allow it. On top of that, there was the blatant racism of the time. Off the Wall was a complete success. MJ having 4 top 10 hits - two #1s (incl this one) - from the same album on the Bilboard Hot 100 (which I think was record breaking), the album reaching no 1 on Bilboard Top Black/RnB Albums (a really telling cathegory) and, even more impressive/unusual, no 3 on Bilboard 200, a feat which did NOT happen often to black artists. It culturally punched the "No Disco movement" in the face (even though it wasn't a pure disco album in that sense). It sold like hotcakes - 3rd best selling album of 1980 both on the US and the UK market - to an audience that included people of all colors but more importantly, on this topic, white people. The roller discos and discoteques went nuts for it, it was played all the time, both on clubs and on the air, DJs loving it. MJ was all over the place, having the Wiz out and releasing Destiny with the Jacksons the year before, with a music video and having it's last single released just months before Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, still being on the Destiny Tour when Off the Wall was released, releasing three music videos from Off the Wall and then releasing Triumph with the Jacksons in 1980, releasing singles from that album during the following 12 months and MJ's first music film "The Triumph" to Can You Feel It, the full version being 9 minutes long. I mean, Off the Wall was everywhere, it was HUGE! Michael Jackson was on top and still rising for everyone to see. Still, it only won one grammy - that of best RnB vocal permormance male. (I'm not sure if it had one or two nominations.) The nominations and wins of the Grammys are decided by industry people, has nothing to o with popular demand. It was the industry, Michael Jackson's peers, saying "You are black, step back in line." No matter the success of the album, MJ had to call around and try to pitch a front cover story, being told that black people's faces did not sell. Around this time, MJ was stopped by a police for driving what "looked like a stolen car" and put in jail for having an unpaid ticket. As MJ's mother Katherine put it, after MJ was bailed out by Bill Bray, "You should have asked the officer what a stolen car looks like" (apperently it looked like a rolls royce being driven by a black person). Moving into the (white) neighbourhood in the early 1970s, white neighbours had chased Jackson family members away from a public park, thrown burning crosses over the fence into their yard and regularily yelled racist slurs after them in the streets. So, MJ went back into the studio to record an album they could not ignore, no matter the color of MJ's skin or the roots of their herritage. Or as MJ told Katherine: "Just wait, some day these magazines will be begging me for an interview."
More MJ live performances!!! Definitely 💯 We have reacted to other live performances on the channel! And those live performances are so amazing! Some of our favorite reactions!
These tunes just *DO NOT AGE* absolute bangers from a time where life revolved around music and the weekend and having fun. MJ always looked happy in this time and all bis music is just so quality musicianship wise.
For 2024 standards, this green screen and music video may looks very outdated, but imagine how amazed and surprised people were in 1979 while watching it; green screen was relatively new at the time, and music videos were not creative, and Michael came into the spotlight and gave a taste of how music videos should be with this one, and later he set the benchmark with Thriller. MICHAEL JACKSON WAS HIM!!!! 🐐
MJ is truly the king of music and music videos! Not only did he set the benchmark... he absolutely obliterated it! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. We truly appreciate it 🙌 🙏 😌 👏 😊
Can you please react to his song Heartbreaker from his Invincible album? It's his most modern and most fresh sounding song. Fun fact: Heartbreaker could be the first dubstep song ever produced (not released) since the production of invincible started in 1997. This means that Michael was atleast 10 years ahead of everyone else since dubstep got it's popularity between 2010-2012. He put all his production skills into this one.
We've both heard that song numerous times. But, we both absolutely love that song! And would love to include it on the channel and jam out with all of you! So... yes... we will definitely react to that soon! Thank you for the recommendation! Much love from the both of us!
Hi Honey & Brown. Love this reaction video. How funny to start it off with Chris Tucker's rendition of this song from Rush Hour movie. Chris always kicks with the wrong leg. Chris repeated the wrong move even during 30th Anniversary special when he joined MJ on stage toward the end of the show - Michael fell to the floor laughing. 😆😆😆 Thanks for bringing Off The Wall songs reactions. This album is the one that launched MJ's career as the greatest entertainer of all time. Yes this is the disco groove - everyone loved dancing to this and a lot of other MJ's songs in the discos - This album was a favorite of mine back then and still now sooo many years later - Michael's music and performances are so timeless.♥♥ I have a mix on my channel - please do check it out -- "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" from his early performance with his brothers in concert up to his later performances when he included an Off The Wall medley during the History Tour. I hope you guys enjoy it. You can tell MJ was enjoying it so much performing the song everytime. 🥰🥰 God bless you two and little Moonwalker -- I look forward to more of the Off The Wall songs reactions. Keep them coming ... Michael Jackson is forever the King of Pop and forever innocent ♥♥🥰🥰🙏🙏👑👑
