CLYDESDALE vs MISSOURI FOXTROTTER - Round Pen Lessons
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- In this video I start working on some round pen lessons with some of the young horses, Oliver and Sonny. Oliver is a 2 year old Clydesdale stallion we rescued earlier this year and Sonny is a 2 year old gelding, out of our mare Patty. Sonny is Legacy and Bob's half brother! We are excited to get these two horses started and learning the basics of training.
With my training method, I will start out using pressure and release techniques. This form of negative/positive reinforcement is instinctual to a horse, and is similar to how they react in a herd setting. So it is a “language” they can understand. Because horses are prey animals, they naturally move away from pressure. When that pressure is eliminated, the horse can relax. It is essential the release is big and quick enough to feel like a reward. Once a few basic lessons are learned in the roundpen, we will eventually move to our homesteads river! Where we will start swimming the horses and applying what they learned. Its gonna be fun!
Oliver, the Clydesdale auction horse has had quite the journey!!! From seeing him at a local auction, then finding him in TX! He finally made his way home to Homestead Horsemanship! Oliver is a fine example of what you spoke about with temperament being in the breeding. Oliver is so calm and wants to do what you want himto do. Im more happy with each vid that you saved him
He is such a great horse! The sweetest boy!
Hes the best horse. Such a sweetheart. ❤
Oliver is looking downright majestic! Hard to believe he was so underweight and sad when you first got him.
I appreciate how you take care of your horses, keeping them groomed and in good condition. I also appreciate how really good Oliver looks these days. It's nice to see you giving him a bath, taking care of his feet and feathers. Also thank you for mentioning the study about Thoroughbred 2-year-olds. My background is with racing Thoroughbreds. So many people don't understand the importance of starting at least some minimal training when horses are young. You are an excellent trainer, gentle, patient, but firm.
If I didn't know that was Oliver I would not believe it -- he looks amazing and is shining with health and vitality (for a draft :). And I 1000% agree what a good and patient boy he is as a two-year old stallion to stand so politely for so long for all of his pampering. I'm thrilled to see the changes in Oliver that you have worked so hard to bring about. Thank you for caring for this boy and saving his life :)
It is hard to believe that Oliver is the same horse you picked up. The changes are just so dramatic. Thank you for doing so much to help him.
You’ve done such a wonderful job with Oliver That’s why he’s such a good boy. ❤
Oliver's coat shines so beautiful!!! He's so handsome!!! Man!!! Hard to imagine he was so sick a short time ago!!! Sunny did well also. Hard to choose, they both did equally well. So willing to do what you ask for the most part. Gentle, gentleman horses! Love to you all❤!
❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you Homestead Horsemanship. You all wear your hearts 💞 on your sleeves. I’m blown away by your beautiful videos and your amazing horses 🐎.
Oliver & Sonny standing in the sunshine, gleaming coats looking chestnut & glowing …JR between them…What a beautiful picture!
OMG, those eyes when Oliver turned toward you....just so precious...
He sure is a handsome dude! Living his best life after starting out on the ruff side. 😊
This video was so good. Loved seeing Oliver’s & Sonny’s 1st training session! JR your informational videos are a Blessing to people who have horses & especially Fox Trotters! Love Emery’s narrations! You have a real Family Wholesome channel that’s so needed these days especially! God Bless you All! 💞😄👍🙌🐴
Emeri is great at narrating. Gives context to each video.
I love your videos. They make my day so happy. Feeling your love thru the
Screen is such a comfort. God bless you and all your animals.
Oliver is beautiful 😊 thank you for that care you give him !
Lovin’ Oliver! His attitude shows me that he is very thankful for you and all you have done for him! You have a life-long ❤️ horse for urself there!! Bless you for all you’ve done for him! There is a place for you reserved in heaven!! ❤️🐴
Oh oliver! Could watch you all day. Such a sweet boy.
Oliver’s looking so good, he’s come such a long way. I don’t know who’ll sweat more with his training, he’s a typical shire slow and steady, can’t see the point in excessive speed lol
Oliver is a Clydesdale, not a Shire.
That's a great way to put it he's like I'm going to get there when I get there it'll be okay
It's the same thing exactly in this regard tho. Clydies and Shires came from identical origins. Cheers! 😉 ✌🏼
The difference in that horse is phenomenal! You have saved his life. The reason I love to watch your channel is because I can see the love you have for your animals. The horses are not just a project, you genuinely love them.
He looks so good!! Amazing job with him, guys!!
Boy, Oliver is sure looking great! Shiny and filled out and huge! Love him! A gentle giant for sure! 👍👍🤪‼️
I'm sorry I was watching Belle and her foal Esmeralda out in the pasture. I am so glad to see you exercising the horses. Oliver is one great horse. He is so lucky he's got you in his corner. You are so blessed with all your horses and foals. Thank you for your great videos. Have a blessed day. 😁❤❤❤
Oliver looks so healthy with the weight & improvement in his walk; he's a credit to your care. It must be gratifying to have the boys learn so well after only 30 minutes of training.
Love watching the work you put into horses they are a beautiful creature giving to us from God ! Never knew how smart they are !!Oliver is getting handsomer every time I see him and so much healthier too !! Great job 👏🏻
Clydesdale’s are such gentle giants!! They both are so gorgeous!! I have loved horses since I was a kid. I am glad I found your channel. God bless you and your help & guidance for these beautiful horses. ❤😊
Welcome ! 🤠
Love ya, Oliver! Such a sweet boy!!!
Oliver is such a lovely fellow! Watching Oli's bath makes me think back to my dad's directions about washing a car; 😂 start at the wheels, then window, front back and last big rinse from the top and dry with a chamois. Looks about the same for a horse.
I cannot believe the change in Oliver...WOW. I watched a couple of the videos when you first had gotten him including bringing him home. I felt so bad for the poor guy. Hadnt seen any videos since and this one popped up in my feed tonight so I thought I would check out how he was doing...To be floorded is an understatement. He is such a beautiful animal. Great job. Thank you fo changng this guys life. Well done...Just amazing.
Amazing isn't it that in this day and age people can come together to do such a wonderful thing . 🤠 He is a special horse and doesn't he look fabulous ! He's gonna be a daddy as well . ( Find out for sure when Souix is tested in another week or so . )
I have been watching since you got Oliver and he looks so much better and happier and I think that is great thank you
Oliver is so handsome! I got choked up! I dont know the dynamics of what brought this horse to you JR and your family. You have your beliefs and I have mine. But dang if I am not convinced of a divine intervention of some sort in this whole story! Not just for you and him and your family but your viewers and friends and the planet. We need more of this! ❤❤❤❤ ❤
Most of us believe that 🤠 and you are right - we need more such happenings in this sometimes scary world .
@@bonsaidouglas9180 Hello again Bonsai! I don't remember most people, but you stuck out, with the circumstances at the time, and the "gurl" thing. LOL! We're having an awful rainy Canada Day weekend in Edmonton. I hope it's better there. Take care! 😉 ✌🏼
@@cattymajiv Hi I replied to you before and got censored because I said something about your fearless leader . I am from New Hampshire originally have been to your country many times and think it's beautiful .
Nope can't mention pa - tr- eo - n video thanking us for sticking up for them. JR just made it
@@bonsaidouglas9180 I'm sorry you got censored. I think it happens to us all at times. But thanks for your reply anway. I hope you have a great 4th of July! ❤
He is a smaller draft, so lovely, perfect riding Clydsdale
God bless him he is so gentle
Love his personality ❤❤
Just luv, luv, luv Oliver😘 and he's looking so good. Thanks guys 😊
Oliver looks so good! It has to make you feel great to see how far he's come!
Happy 4th guys🇺🇸🇺🇸. 🧨 All of your horses are beautiful & special, but Oliver is just so adorable. He certainly is a gentle giant. He also is has overcome so much already in his short life. Thank goodness you found each other. God Bless you & the kids💕💕🐴
Oliver is something so good so beautiful 😍 I love me some Oliver ❤
He is a good boy. I love watching him in the river. He really enjoyed that.
It's hard to believe that this is the colt that was one auction away from the kill pen. What a blessing that you happened to be at an auction, immediately felt drawn to him, though you walked away, then couldn't stop thinking about him, searched for him, etc., and there he stands, sooooo beautiful, strong and healthy! Oliver is where God meant for him to be! Good job JR! Good job Rosa Family, Good job channel supporters! Oliver stands as a testament to LOVE!
Amen to that 🤠
Perfectly expressed on how I feel also...🦋💜💜💜💜💜💜💜🦋
Amen
he wouldn't have made it thru the next auction. He would have likely collapsed (in his back legs) from his EPM either being trailered there or being shown. If he fell, he was never getting back up again.
I think Oliver is just really really lucky
I can't believe the outcome of him in just a short period of time. He has grown so much and he looks wonderful. Fantastic temperament two. I had to shave my Clyde's nails legs down because he got scratches really bad and almost impossible to control with feathers.
His nails? Please tell us what you mean. What are the scratches from? I'm just curious and want to learn.
Scratches is a form of dermatitis that can affect horses’ heels, pasterns, and lower legs. The skin forms micro-lesions that let in bacteria or fungi. It can be caused by various things, but standing in excessive moisture from a muddy pasture is a common one. If your local area has a rainy spring or summer, it can be hard to avoid them.
The scratches get infected, causing the horse a lot of discomfort. The thin skin on the horse’s lower leg becomes heated and swollen and covered with tiny scabs. These tiny wounds have to be dried up in order to heal. To do that, you have to sanitize the area and pick off the tiny scabs, then apply medicine to them.
Horses like Oliver that have long feathers (hair) on their lower legs are especially hard to treat because you can’t get at these little wounds very easily. Sometimes people shave the feathers off in order to get at the scratches to treat them with topical medicine to address the infection.
There are various commercial brands of medicine or ointment that you can buy to treat scratches. Lots of people successfully use home remedies.
But scratches are stubborn and can take weeks to totally go away. Some horses seem to be prone to getting scratches more than other horses, so once your horse has gotten them once, you have to be super vigilant to keep an eye out for a recurrence.
Left untreated, scratches can turn into a pretty serious condition. If the wounds don’t close or get too infected, scratches can turn into a vet emergency.
All of the care that Oliver is getting will prevent it from becoming an emergency. The diatomaceous earth that JR is hand-working through Oliver’s feathers dries up the underlying skin a bit and helps maintain the health of his heels and lower legs.
Also, I don’t think that JR really wants to shave off those beautiful feathers! They are part of Oliver’s Clydesdale look. I don’t blame him for that! But it means more work for JR.
@@fleetskipper1810 Thanks so much for your great explanation! It would be sad to have to shave them. I understand that the D. Earth is also a good antibacterial.
You explained a lot of stuff. It's too bad the OP hasn't replied yet. I'm still wondering what they meant by his "nails." Do you know? They said they had to shave their "Clyde's nails legs down". I can't see how that could be a typo of "Clydesdale's legs down".
@dianesouza2742 What do you mean you had to shave your "Clyde's nails legs down"? Is that just a typo of "Clydesdale's legs down"? It doesn't seem it could be, so what does it mean?
@cattymajiv Yes sorry it is a typo. The only way I could control them completely would be by shaving his legs.
Oliver looks so good. Shiny coat and every week improved. I love is newly brighter feathers.
Oliver has become a truly magnificent horse...The more i see of him the more i love him...Sonny did real good and Oliver did good in their training sessions... i reckon in Olivers case, slow and steady wins the race...Happy 4th July to all your family (2 legged and 4)...🎉💜🐴
Oliver looks soooo good!
Using the correct terms makes it clear to your students from the start! I appreciate your understanding, and meant no real criticism to you. Your way with horses is certainly winning for you! Happy 4th to you all! Love from Newfoundland!
Oliver is a cold-blooded breed...they are slower in response generally ..he did great for such a baby!
Oliver does amazingly when you wash his feather!! He’s so patient while getting his bath.
He looks incredible when he’s all done. His coat is so shiny, and seeing his feather (so many people call them feathers, but the proper pronunciation is feather. It’s not plural) all white and clean. To see how far he has come since he joined your family is amazing. The care you’ve put into him. He knows how much you are there to help him.
Most of the horses look so small next to your 6’4” + statue
Your training sure does pay off with these magnificent souls.
I’m excited to see what you share with us in the future.
Your so kind and loving with your horses but firm that’s nice❤
Thanks! For my Oliver 🇱🇷😘
I❤uploads w/JR training any of his horses, he's a great teacher & can see why he's gone Pro....cause he is one!! Ollie is looking so Good & his 1st session was Great! Sunny🌞was Brilliant..he's so smart at 2 & trying to anticipate what you want before you ask for it. I thought you were keeping him to show & perhaps breed, but JR mentioned he's sold & being trained for the new owner!!? Shocker!😨
I was a little confused as well, but I think you may be thinking of Champ, Oliver’s paddock mate.
What's shocking about it? It's a horse farm. As one other owner of a horse operation also has to keep explaining over and over to their audience, the horses are only sold to good reliable homes. And if every horse was kept forever, they would have no abilty to help new horses.
Some viewers are obviously teenagers, with no clue about the idea of making a living. Horse feed and vet care, and the huge number of other things that ALL cost money, do not come free. Selling horses is a reality of farm life. That said, I am basically opposed to all horse breeding, even when done in a caring way, but I know it won't ever end. At least these guys are super caring and responsible about it.
His name is Oliver, it has meaning, it's not Ollie. Ever hear of Ollie Twist ? No , it is Oliver Twist
You guys done a good job on him looks so good I can’t wait to see his baby ❤
❤ they both did really well for their first training session. I will say thank you for your training me too lol. ❤ Happy fourth from my family as well. 🎉 I have learned alot from you guys.
Oliver is so beautiful ,,, I am so glad you got him ,,,,
They both did well. Oliver is for sure a gentle giant. Will Becca work with him at all? He is a good boy. ❤❤❤ Thanks for sharing.
Oliver is a beautiful amazing horse 🐎🐎 love 💓 Olivier
I love to watch you work with Oliver especially he’s a beautiful Clydesdale. I went to warm Springs and got to experience at the birthing center with the Clydesdales. They had six new babies
Your grandpa Elmo was a wonderful man. He got me started in the world of show foxtrotters. Even though I've been out of the foxtrotter world for some time now, due to the direction my career took me, I've never forgotten Elmo and Mary and all the nice people I met in the foxtrotter show world.
Hi there. Sixty years ago we used laundry bluing to make a white horse extra white. The bluing came as a little block wrapped in cheese cloth and tied with string. Grandma used it in the final rinse to get the whites - sheets, undies etc. - very white. It worked wonderfully on a horse as long as your horse wasn't inclined to dig up some clay to roll in over night before showing.
My grandmother used bluing in the rinse water as well. We had the big cast iron pots for wash day.
What a wonderful sunshine baby Oliver is!
I love you guys and the whole herd of horses. So glad to see Oliver get a bath. I look forward to seeing Sonny and Oliver go swimming again. I love y'all. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
2 majestic Horses, I always wonder what horses think in training, like this human keep me going in circles, keeps wanted me to back up and so on!!!!
My, Oliver is maturing so wonderfully. I hope you are sending pictures and keeping his first amish owner updated(if he wanted to be). I am sure he would be so pleased and happy for the amazing change and recovery of Oliver.
Man I want my own Oliver now! He is so chill! I grew up with 2 quarter horses who were amazing, but a bit high strung. Probably bc I was 12 and my grandfather was pretty old fashioned when it came to training. "You gotta spend every minute you can with me... Heard that a thousand times ". Lol. He def wasn't wrong but that wasn't the whole story.
Oliver is looking great well done ….
Oliver is a great horse
Big breed appreciator here. If you never dealt with them and are into horses, you are MISSING OUT
Oliver is really looking good...what a sweet boy! Happy 4th of July to you all!!
Oliver is a great looking, gentle and is gonna olny get stronger
Oliver is looking so awesome
God bless you all and your farm. JR is so knowledgeable in all around horse training and care. Much love. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You mentioned before Oliver needed to fill in his neck next. It looks to me as if it is improving. How do you think it is going. He sure is looking better. Like his calm attitude. A couple horse people I talked to agreed on that horses that have a lot of experiences not only become naturally more intelligent but it triggers DNA more. Better again than "just letting them sit in a pasture or stall". Tricks, terrain, directions, variety, learning how to stretch and do muscle use/builders.... Triggering bone strength is another good addition to the overall direction. Kind thought with the useful camera use equipment. Nice ideas of useful things from people.
Triggers DNA ? That doesn't make sense .
@@bonsaidouglas9180 You might like the word "activates" DNA better.
@@robertshrewsbury5067 Still doesn't make sense though.
@@bonsaidouglas9180 never heard this before...
Happy 4th of July!
Oliver 10 out of 10
wait....THAT'S OLIVER?!?!...OMG, I haven't seen your videos in a while, and when I saw that horse..I thought " that's not Oliver" they must have gotten another Clydesdale...then you said his name and my jaw literally hit the floor!...He's grown so much, and gotten darker? He looks amazing!!!
He looks great doesn't he 🤠!
Also looks dark because he's wet.
You treat your animals like they should be treated! If I may ask, what industry do you both work in outside of the farm?! You both must be incredibly busy!!
I’m a design engineer for the Army
Oliver looks 1000x better than first video
Good video thanks xx
Hello from British Columbia Canada
🇨🇦👍👌🎪🎠🖌🎠🎨🎠🌲🚐🛣🌳🛶❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I have a one ton cube van I haven't washed yet definitely more real estate.
I thought he took his head back when the dog distracted him . Did he paw his left front leg then ? Otherwise he looks super , knows he's special and will be a great student . Sunny did really well and is beautiful . He reminds me of a red pony I used to have named Rusty . An 8 1/2 is fair. .
I'm assuming that the swelling in Oliver's sheath has all been resolved, along with all the other problems you took care of? He's a wonderful Clydesdale---so glad you diversified! Although when I began watching your channel I knew zero about Missouri Fox Trotters, and I've enjoyed learning from you.
Way back in my Horse showing days we would scrub them down and after the rinse then take a bucket with water and white vinegar. their coats would be so shiny
It's like washing a car. Thank you for sharing
Beautiful🌹🐎
God Bless & happy 4th of July 🇺🇲🧨🎆 IMHO Oliver wins the gentleness award🏆hands down its amazing how calm he is & I love where i think? he was trying to kiss Emeri & or the camera🙂 i think he did good from his lesson a little slower than Sonny (but look how huge❤️he is!) & like JR said Sonny is more responsive I think Sonny won the points for the lessons🏆=BTW Oliver looks HUGE! & fat! (Good!😁) I'm so glad to see him doing so good! you guys have truly saved his life & done an amazing job on him I can't wait til someday JR is able to ride Oliver that'll be a real sight to see!🙂❤️🐎
I LOVE YOU OLLIE💜💜
Love to see Oliver and how he has blossomed into such a beautiful boy. Bless him and all of you. Have a question do you use horse sprays that are natural instead of bug spray. I noticed other horse cannels use natural prodcut sprays for their horses
I saw him once say that he was using a natural product he buys in bulk, but he decants it into the spray bottle.
We have sent many different kinds . 🤠
❤❤❤❤❤❤
There is more than one way to train a horse. Just treat them with kindness and respect regardless of the method used.
Happy 4th of July
I'd give Oliver a 9
❤❤❤❤
These are beautiful horses 😮and they where kill pen horses and this guy made a big difference 🐎😘🤎
No , these are not kill pen horses . Only Oliver was close to that . Jewel and magnolia were auction but are of his stallion Image ' s bloodline which is why he bought them . The others are his own personal breeding stock Oliver is an exception
But you are right , he has made a BIG difference 🤠
Sonny did do better on the training, Oliver is still the one I Love the most. All of your horses are amazing but he has a piece of my ❤. 🥰🥰🥰
An Oliver car wash!🙂
Oliver doesn’t know he’s a horse. He thinks he’s a King ❗️
✨️💜✨️
Actually, I’m pretty sure that there _are_ wrong ways to do this… the Tazer-to-the-tongue comes to mind, for example. ⚡️🐴⚡️
lol. just like washing your car.
Will the EPM have long-term effects on Oliver? He appears to be quite the gentleman giant!
Oliver appears to be in the 30% that recovers fully . JR has said that he has shown no more signs or symptoms since finishing the 90 day treatment .
@@bonsaidouglas9180 thanks! I know it's kinda weird to be vicariously emotionally involved... it's just that I'm an OTR Driver and see everything from the magnificent to

Welcome to the family 🤠!
It's amazing what love can do oh, he is looking so pretty or should I say handsome I seem to remember watching a video on the Budweiser Clydesdales the Grooms they're taking care of them and before they are shown or they're taken to a parade what they do is they wash them with the blue shampoo like you're doing and then they dust their feathers with cornstarch they put their hubs in a galvanized steel kind of bucket halfway filled with cornstarch and then they brush it into their feathers with their hands in their fingers I guess it sheds the dirt real well
What does a horse consider a reward?
Oliver comes from good breeding. Plus it helps that he is a draft. They are such gental giants.
Cold-blooded work stock ... a perfect example of his breed!
You saved Oliver and he is so healthy. I am so impressed with all the training you have done with him. Oliver always wants to please you. He is so smart and handsome. Sonny looks so gentle.
Oliver and Sonny both look so good, but I have to say that Oliver’s transformation is astounding!! 😊😊
Wow Oliver looks so good ! Hard to believe it's the same horse that you rescued from the auction barn . He seems to be putting on the weight very nicely. Your boy Sonny seems to be a very smart horse. He was really trying to read your next request and please you. Hope y'all have a great 4th of July ❣️❣️❣️
This was so interesting to watch! Two gorgeous horses and both great students. Look how far Oliver has come thanks to your love and care! He was so lucky to be found by you and your family! He knows it too! Look how he loved his bath knowing just how beautiful he is!
Oliver likes the massage that comes with his bath!
