    A little something not everyone may be aware of. King studs aren't there just to take vertical loads. They also have to carry horizontal loads, wind against the face of the wall. That's why doubling up the king stud doesn't always solve the problem.
    People often underestimate the power of wind. Next time you're driving down the highway at 60mph, put your hand out the car window (keep the other firmly on the steering wheel!) and feel how much force is pushing against your hand. Your hand is only a few inches square. Now imagine a strong wind hitting a window measuring 3x5 feet. That's what your wall has to resist.

    We wanted to run through the king stud with a double stud, heavy duty stud shoe around the pipe, and the inspector still rejected it, which seems non-sensical if the concern is weight bearing integrity.

    The trap are distances ie. 30, 42, 60, 72 etc are specific to the trap arm distance. It is to keep the p-trap for syphonage. This is per UPC, and the IRC and IPC are less restrictive. This is not the same as the under floor horizontal drainage is unlimited in length. Table 703.2 of the Uniform Plumbing codes has all the answers for you. Great video.

The IBC limitations are for the reasons you gave for multi-story buildings. I’m not familiar with other code publishers.

    For a raised foundation (I guess also for slab foundation too), can a loop vent be used here similar to what is used for kitchen islands? I would think that would work and avoid drilling through the king studs unless the code states loops vents can only be used at kitchen islands. That way all pipes stay within walls.

    • @jmac213stuff
      @jmac213stuff 2 роки тому

      Yes that is correct. In instances that do not allowed this due to the structure, then it still works, but it has to be pitched 1/4" per foot. Normally vents can be flat. In this case, if drilling through, it best (and harder) to drill at a 45 degrees to the FLR and your golden.

    Greg,
    I am facing the problem where I cannot drill through the king stud, in my case it would be a post cause there will a post on top of the window header that support a wider window above. This is single story house with 12ft walls & cathedral ceiling.
    I am thinking of using back venting method underground with wye rolled up 45 deg and run it pass the king stud (post) so no need to bore/notch the kings stud and trimmer.
    Do you think its complianced to code?

I may need to lower one of the drain stubs in the wall, but if its a horizontal dirty arm I don't think I can do it without ripping our the cabinets which I can't do.

    • @gregvancom

    There are three ways to deal with venting under a window, one is to do an Air Admittance device which has it's own restrictions (which may not be code in your area) or to do a Bow Vent, which runs a vent loop in the stud back down under the floor. The other way is to run through the cabinet to vent.

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  4 роки тому

      Air admittance valves might not be allowed by your local building department. It's a mechanical device that could fail and good point about the venting in the same way as you would kitchen island. If something is allowed for one part of the house, then it should be allowed for other parts.

      @@gregvancom Honestly I think it's more about people putting inside a wall then under a sink.

    • @carultch
      @carultch 2 роки тому

      @@gregvancom Air Admittance Valves (AAV's) are controversial, because they are good for the fixture, and good for economizing the venting pipe and roofing, but they are not good for the sewer/septic system as a whole. Plus, they are a device with moving parts, that is prone to failure, and the consequence of this failure is flammable smelly gasses seeping in to the house. The sewer and septic depend on conventional roof vents, so there is bidirectional flow of gasses, with the sewer gasses venting throughout the system at each customer's house. If AAV's were used everywhere because of their convenience, and not one standard vent were used, the sewer system would build up a positive pressure of gasses.
      Plus, AAV's have the problem of being a maintenance item the home owner may not know they even need to think about, and then after a decade, the valve fails and unexplained sewer gas seeps in to the home. This is why it is common for standard vents to be required in new construction, even if AAV's as an alternative are allowed in existing construction to fix an illegal unvented drain.
