Hi Harvey! How hard is to turn the steering wheel without the servo motor? I have a MK 1 but facelift fabia sedan! Is the method the same, like the old one?
Quality video, good point about the securing bolt too, easy to forget how often it's been reused. Have you covered the front void bush replacement yet? A weak area on these cars.
Thanks, glad you liked the vid. I did the front console bushes about 3 years from new, on this car and I think they are still OK, also the anti-roll bar bushes. Will have a look at them again and possibly do a video as I have some tips on changing them, thanks again :-)
I would be using the same technique to gain access to the horn contacts - my horn doesn't sound almost ever. Am I correct in assuming that the 4 torx headed bolts under the 4 spokes of the center of the steering wheel are the contacts?
@@HatBoyHarvey my horn sounds only if I push REALLY hard on the bottom part of the wheel, where the "AIRBAG" logo is placed. In this video I cannot identify which parts are missing contact. Are they shown at any frame? Cheers man
Hi. Thanks for this video. I have just followed your excellent procedure but now have an airbag light on. I removed the airbag again and checked the connections, all appear good. There are no OBD fault codes. The light has never been on before removing the steering wheel. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Hmm, as long as you disconnect the earth lead it should do that. Assuming you did then the connections and clock spring need looking at again, but if you fix the connection you will still need the fault code cleared. I have the same issue at the moment and will compile a video of hopefully a fix. Mine has just come on, on it's own, so I'm in the same boat :-)
Thank you for the reply. I definitely disconnected the battery at the -ve terminal. I will have another look at it tomorrow and eagerly await your video. Good luck with yours!
Great video could i do this to straighten my steering wheel had the tracking done now the steering wheel is not centred its turned to the right by 10 degrees or so
Thanks, I would go back to where you had the tracking done, the steering wheel should be dead straight, no excuse unless somthing is wrong with steering/suspension/hub/arb joints and bushes. The best places for wheel alignment use lasers and first centralise the steering correctly. Moving the wheel would work for a temp fix, but the rack would be off.
@@HatBoyHarvey I had just replaced both inner track rods and ends as i had done a wishbone replacement and noticed the rods where badly rusted and could not be adjusted will take it back tomorrow for them to sort it thanks for the quick reply
Hi my frend.... I removed my airbag and stay airbag yellow light on... I have one small OBD ELM327 scaner.. but i dont can switch off airbag light... What I can doing in my garage?? Thanks
If you have upset the ABS and the light comes on then only a acanner will get rid of it. VAGCOM will cancel it, but you have to try to remember just what you think set it off. Was it just the airbag/horn assembly and did you remember to keep it upright without knocking it? If he connection isn't right the you will have to fix that. Hope this helps and you eventually cancel the dash light :-)
Thanks, I appreciate that. If you didn't disconnect the battery before hand this may happen @ '00:32'. Also the connections need to be correct when you put it all back. Unfortunately you will need to clear the fault code with OBD2, it will also show up any other faults you may have or have had. You have to be very careful removing airbags as they are sensitive items. I would re-check the connections/fitment again before clearing the code. Hope this helps and you get it sorted :-)
HatBoyHarvey,,I have a Skoda Fabia 02 model petrol 2ltr My horn only works when I turn the steering wheel either way from dead centre. Do you know if it is the clockspring that has worn? causing the horn and airbag light to be permanently on. Any advice would be welcome, thanks.
@@HatBoyHarvey Yes,,Ive just been watching another video by chrisfix airbag light and no horn was down to the clockspring..So as u say I will have a gander at it,,thanx again.
I would look at the horn itself as they are susceptible to the weather. Get somone to press the horn and test at the horn for power first before taking off the steering wheel :-)
If the steering wheel is still crooked after alignment has been done, then I the alignment needs to be done again as the steering wheel being straight is part of the alignment process. This is a precise job and best done with a laser enabled machine. But that said, yes it is possible to move your steering wheel a notch at a time to straighten it, but I wouldn't as a laser tool in the right hands can be spot on accurate :-)
Thank you for the tutorial. Do you know which steering wheels also fit? I know that later models of fabia used octavias mk2 wheel straight from the factory. Thank you
Sorry I don't know this, but I guess the VRS 3 spoke may fit on the spine, but don't know if/how the airbag would be compatable or not. Sorry I can't be any more help for you :-)
Sorry I don't have a specific video on this yet, but very often this warning comes up for other faults not related to the airbag. So a diagnostic test and fault code clear would be the best root :-)
@@HatBoyHarvey ok thank you very much I checked the airbag connections on driver side and passenger side and they were ok i guess you are right it is diagnostic needed it would be nice if you can do a video on how to use the diagnostic on a Skoda fab and how to turn the warning lights off I bought myself a diagnostic machine I wasn't going to go down that road where they charge you stupid money just to tell you what's wrong with the car anyway appreciate the advice I hope to see some new videos you are spot-on I like the way you explain it straight to the point very easy to follow I repaired my Skoda fab just by watching some of your videos appreciate that I looking forward to the next ones have a good week
Thanks Hatboy. I have a problem with power steering working intermittently. Had a scan done which produced the following code 01288 - Terminal 30; Steering Assist: Signal too Low Any ideas? Thanks
I've heard that corrosion on the connections can cause intermittent faults Also check fuses for same and your battery and earth lead and conections have good contact as this wet weather can effect a change. My fabi used to do odd intermittent stuff until I re-cleaned the battery ground to car :-)
Unfortunately this could have easily happened inadvertently when you disconnected/reconnected the system. Some systems can be quite sensitive to momentary losses of power on re-connection and trigger a fault. Assuming you followed my procedure and didn't have a fault before and your airbag is OK, clearing the fault code through OBD2 should clear the dash light.
@@alizapata8581 If it only came on after you took the steering wheel off then it is related to this, but if it just came on randomly it could be something unrelated, but you wont know unless you can find it and diagnostic test can help do that. Yes check all fuses is a good idea and costs nothing but time and worth doing first. It could easily be a poor connection or frayed wire somewhere.
I haven't found a single fuse for airbag system, so it will be integrated into various modules and the dash instrument panel. This light often comes on for un-related issues so an OBD2 diagnostic tool is best used to find faults. You could of course look at the steering wheel connections and clockspring, but this is rarely an issue. Be careful messing with this if you don't know what you are doing.
Thank you, excellent video, and excellent demonstrator. Well done sir 🙂👍
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it :-)
Hi Harvey! How hard is to turn the steering wheel without the servo motor? I have a MK 1 but facelift fabia sedan! Is the method the same, like the old one?
The key is not to engage the steering lock so you need the key initially. It's not that hard to turn with a little muscle :-)

Look to the horn itself as these often fail/fuse/contacts. It can be accessed though the left fog light grill :-)

Horn fuse, then see if there is power at the horn, then take airbag off carefully and find issue/fix contacts.
