I received seeds from a friend in Missouri a couple of years ago. I went online to learn something about germinating them. The instruction was to put them in the wet paper towel, a plastic bag, and the refrigerator for at least three months. After five months, I forgot about them, I took them out of the refrigerator but they had sprouted the tap root, molded, and turned brown. Haven't had any seeds since then but would like to try again.

Question : I'm trying to grow PawPaw from seed, and I've seen a few videos & read from various online sources that all you need to do is wrap the seeds in a moist paper towel & store it in the fridge for up to 100 days before planting the seeds.
None of the other videos discussed keeping them in a medium (soil) for the 100 days.
Is the soil absolutely necessary in your opinion, or is it just how YOU personally grow them from seed? I planted my seeds on Nov. 3/21. Yesterday I opened up my Ziploc bags and none of them had sprouted. They all appear the same as when I put them in. Keep in mind the 100 day mark won't hit until February 11th/22, but I just wanted to inspect them.
Any advice?
It is not absolutely necessary to use soil as the medium. A moist paper towel can work just fine as long as you make sure it stays moist. The seeds are not going to sprout in the fridge, they are only going through what is know as cold stratification. It's essentially a necessary hibernation the seeds need before they will sprout. Next step will be to remove the seeds from the fridge and place them in a warm room of your house. Keep the paper towel moist and make sure the seeds don't mold. If the paper towel gets nasty or moldy make sure to replace it with a new moist fresh one. After a couple of weeks you'll see them start to sprout. Happy growing!!

Do you need 2 paw paw trees to pollinate for fruit? What variety would you recommend for zone 4?
Yes, you will absolutely need at least 2 trees in order to have fruit set. Unfortunately Pawpaws are only cold hardy to zone 5.
They do not need to be grafted?
If you germinate them in january and shoots up in march and plant out in june they can reach 2 feet till september?

Rather than keeping the seeds in the refrigerator, why couldn't I plant the seeds directly into the ground before the first frost and let them grow as in the wild? Thanks for your help.
You absolutely could do that! But just remember that plant propagation is also about insuring the best chances of success. Outdoors the seed may just “disappear” for many reasons. In the fridge you’ll be able to keep an eye on it. 😀
what zone are you in putting in greenhouse. how warm does it stay. without heater?
I am right on the line of hardiness zone 6 and 7. The greenhouse is a conundrum due to the fact that it can be susceptible to extreme highs and lows on the same day, depending on the weather. Even on a 20 degree Fahrenheit day with the sun out the greenhouse will be roughly 70 to 80 degrees. It's not unheard of to get even warmer than that. At night a greenhouse is really just going to slowly find its way to whatever the low is outside. So essentially what I'm saying is that even in the middle of the coldest days in winter, you will definitely need both a ventilation fan to remove the suns heat, and at night a heater to keep out the frigid cold. A greenhouse is one of the least energy efficient buildings on the planet (outside of a geothermal greenhouse). It really just comes down to whether it'll be worth the investment to you. Any idea if paw paw trees grow in a tropical country?
There is a subtropical variety that grows in Florida. The fruit quality is not good. There is a lot of breeding work going on with them though.
How many days do you need to germinate? What is the appropriate temperature for that?
We have a video out that shows what you can expect in about two months. As for temperature we just put them in a warm dark place. Typically we use the laundry room, but any room in your house should work.

During the stratification period, while they’re in dormancy in the refrigerator do you spritz with water at any point?

I have had mold issues during stratification. Any tips?
Honestly I just stick them under the sink and wash the mold off and change the paper towel. I try to avoid using a peroxide solution whenever I can.
@@PlantFanatics I used sphagnum peat one year and lost about 50 seeds to mold. I learned that it worked better to isolate seeds into bags of 5 just in case I got funk. I bleached seeds before cold stratifying and used moist paper towel instead of soil to stratify. Midway through stratification I replaced all paper towels and rebleached. This worked extremely well and I only had a few seeds with contamination. About 50% of seeda have germinated so far and it has only been a few weeks.

@@danfromcarniculture943 I wash my hands and the stratified pawpaw seeds with Dawn dishwashing liquid and rinse thoroughly, before putting them in unbleached (brown) paper towels. I also use distilled water to wet the towel. This can help prevent contamination that can grow in the warm, moist ziplock bag. It takes a little bit more time, but you get much better results. There’s lots of things out here floating in the air, like bread mold, and on your hands and work surface, that wants to grow in the same place as your seeds.

Honestly I don’t know of anyone that ships to Europe. There’s just too many hurdles to jump though for international shipping of plants and seeds.

They don’t like their roots being bothered... generally it’s not a good idea to put multiple in one pot then transplant, just start in smaller pots and graduate them to larger ones
Absolutely. Those seedlings were only a test of what I’ve been told. It turns out they do perfectly fine being moved around. Obviously a larger tree that’s been in the ground shouldn’t be moved. But these smaller seedlings don’t seem to mind it. Thanks for the great comment!
So why not just let nature do it and put it in the ground?
You propagate yourself so you can control all the variables and have a much higher and faster success rate.
You should know what you are doing to make videos about it!!!!!
