I was 13 when i watched this movie and the movie always stayed in my head. The robot spider was scary and gene simons was the bad guy. For me a classic movie
Me too. I was 7. And stuck with me. This is real. Because this is today. Drones could be built or hacked to target people for assassination. Or your own machines could be hacked and turned against you.
I looks like the movie that spawned TJ Hooker, Miami Vice and and of course, Magnum PI. Actually it was Magnum P.I., Magnum Pi was about a cop that figured out the clue was the width divided by circumference.
My grandma gave my mom a VHS copy of Runaway as a gift in 1987. I was 4 years old at the time, but I knew how to operate the VCR, and this quickly became one of my favorite movies. The nighttime scene at the beginning where Tom Selleck goes into the house to rescue the baby scared the crap out of me as a kid. I will never forget those spider robots either! I love this movie so much! So much nostalgia!
I got this movie on vhs yesterday at a local department store called "my unique" and describing how the trailer looks to this movie says it all. I love it and it's looks real creepy, scary, and badass with clues, suspense, action, and drama.
Just watched this film tonight and it's absolutely badass! I was only 1 year old when it was made and can't believe I've only just seen it now. Remember to check under your bed for robot spiders!
Well, back in it. She didn't get above-the-title billing in "Summer School" either. That didn't happen for her until "Look Who's Talking" came out in '89.
I really liked this movie back then. I was into electronics, and had my little commodore 64. I thought the depicts of killer tech were intriguing as well as scary. Especially since I could understand some of the concepts.
Starring: Cynthia Rhodes! (Who you haven't seen in the trailer until one line at the end.) NOT starring: Kirstie Alley! (Who got more screentime than Tom Selleck in this trailer)
Hey it’s directed by Michael Crichton who was a filmmaker for Westworld (1973 movie) and he was The author ✍️ of Best story books 📚 novels like Jurassic Park Congo The Lost World The Astronomer Strains and more!!!
This film was so cool. Makes me want to grab a glass of milk and fill it with Hershey's Syrup. Back to my childhood. AI bullets, AI spiders, AI car bombs, AI babysitters with a pistol. 1980's cutting edge brilliance. Tom Selleck, Gene Simmons (KISS). Even the kid from Flight of the Navigator is in this: Paul Reubens.
This movie is awesome. Gene makes a great bad guy and Selleck makes an awesome cop. Plenty of action and suspense. Grab it on DVD. Runaway is a kick butt sci-fi action thriller.
I saw a bit of this movie when i was a kid and i haven't actually seen it ever since but i remember i had a nightmare about gene simmons and killer robot spiders as a kid :) This doesn't feel so scarry anymore!
watched the whole movie the other night and didn't even realize that was gene simmons until watching the trailer today...selleck vs. simmons is an epic battle for all time
Just learned of this. 'Runaway' is writ & directed by Michael Crichton of 'Jurassic Park', 'Westworld', 'Coma', 'Sphere', 'Disclosure', 'E.R.' and 'Twister'. Shame this movie flubbed under 'The Terminator'.
The military as of July 2014 had just successfully tested a self guided bullet just like the ones used in this film that is 30 years old. Matter of fact we have all this tech in use now interesting how science fact catches up to science fiction.
My brother died on the set of that movie. One of the mechanical spiders went haywire and Tom Selleck just stood there. He just stood there and watched him die!
Need to see this again during lockdown. Haven’t watched this in so long, thought Burt Reynolds was the lead role! Maybe I’ve been watching to much Archer.
Tom Selleck, Gene Simmons, Kirstie Alley and the kid from Flight of the Navigator in a movie from the writer of Westworld and Jurassic Park. A movie with robo-spiders. Awesome!
KISS had just taken their makeup off within the last year and it seemed like about half of the people in the theater were still unaware of what he looked like....but they knew that Gene Simmons was in the movie. The first scene Gene was shown in the movie heard a lot of gasps in the theater and whispering...."That is him!" So cool!
Good but little known flick. Gene Simmons was soooo damn evil, Kirstie Alley was so beautiful and Tom Selleck was so damn HOT! Oh, I also liked Lois the robot. I hope they fixed her.
I remember I first saw a little hover bot in this and I thought it was pretty badass. Basically a quadricopter (a tricopter) but it was clearly on strings :)
Damn! I checked out this trailer as I respect Rob Ager (a movie reviewer who suggested that this film is amongst his top 20-some Sci-Fi films of all time) but had no idea that Gene Simmons played the "Baddie" here...whoa nelly! He looks terrific in the part - I'll certainly give him that...I knew that Gene tried his hand at acting in the 80's and I've seen a horror film with him as a DJ who gives a kid a record that turns out the be possessed (or something to that effect, at least). He was pretty good! I'll definitely have to check this one out.
I couldn't believe MIchael Crichton actually directed this. For a first time director, he did a pretty good job I think. Good premise that future exploration storywise could flesh out even more IMO.
I remember watching this movie as a kid. Even tho I liked robots, this one freaked me out 🤣. Especially the spider bots injecting crap into people and killing them, lol.
This was a time when you can still repair computer parts on the circuit board with a soldering iron. Nowadays they are so small you would have to throw the entire circuit board away and buy a new one.
Snagged a copy of it just the other day at Best Buy for 5 bucks. And you know what? It was pretty cool. It was cheesy in parts and dated as hell (a lot of 80's sci fi stuff is unfortunately), but the premise was pretty cool and I especially liked the heat seeking missile bullets that Gene Simmons gun could fire at people. Plus, Cynthia Rhodes and Kirstie Alley when she was hot and you have a winner in my book. Kept waiting for a voiceover from Selleck ala Magnum PI too in some parts lol.
I thought of this movie the other day because of the "bullet with your name on it" bit. It seems like drones are becoming more and more like this, where politicians won't be able to go out in public for fear of being dive-bombed.
80s movies like this are awesome entertainment.
I was 8y ...yes same like
Same... I was 14
SAME ! ❤
And now DARPA are trying to make those self-guided bullets a reality & robots are almost everywhere.
No zappy spider-bots yet, though...
From the synthesized music, sound effects and acting/dialogue.....this trailer couldn't get any more 80s if it tried.
And because this was only a PG-13 movie, the first naked breasts I saw on TV were from this movie when it aired on HBO.
The 144p quality reminds me of a 10th generation VHS dupe too, nice.
but question there was a robot or computer in this movie that sounded like a real person was it a voice actor or a synthesizer?
I looks like the movie that spawned TJ Hooker, Miami Vice and and of course, Magnum PI. Actually it was Magnum P.I., Magnum Pi was about a cop that figured out the clue was the width divided by circumference.
Starring Tom Seleck and Gene Simmons. Yeah this thing is pretty damn 80s.
An old forgotten gem of the '80's.
I got this movie on vhs yesterday at a local department store called "my unique" and describing how the trailer looks to this movie says it all. I love it and it's looks real creepy, scary, and badass with clues, suspense, action, and drama.
I just had some weird flashback of robot spiders and vividly remembered watching this as a kid. I might have to watch this again for the nostalgia.
Kirstie Alley was such a babe...
was
Indeed.
Conservative smarts and beauty. Same with Tom S.
@@jcbourdain She's still alive, or I didn't get some kind of 'joke' here.
RIP Kristie 😢
Later on I realised it's genie simmons from KISS lol :D
I thought he resembled John Lovitz from Saturday Night Live.
Just found this on Amazon Prime Video today, haven't seen it in decade's. Watching it tomorrow 😂
A classic! Loved this when I was a wee boy, and BTW, for Michael Chriton fans, read the book "Prey" awesome book!
Just watched this film tonight and it's absolutely badass! I was only 1 year old when it was made and can't believe I've only just seen it now. Remember to check under your bed for robot spiders!
From a time where Kristie Alley wasn't famous enough to be mentioned in the trailer.
we are still in that time lol...
Well, back in it. She didn't get above-the-title billing in "Summer School" either. That didn't happen for her until "Look Who's Talking" came out in '89.
The pinnacle for her was the late 80's/early 90's. Unlike some other actress from "Cheers", the one she replaced.
RIP Kirstie Alley
Such an underrated movie.
Yes underrated enough for a remake.
this is eighties movie madness. i can't get enough of that narrator's voice. it kicks my ass :DDD
In a world....
Trailers today are void of voiceover and feels bland with almost the same kind of music and spoils content
This movie needs a reboot. Most of the tech in that movie is reality now.
This is another one of my childhood favorites found it in the 5 dollar bin some time ago and had to buy it.
I used to watch this movie on repeat when I was a kid in the early 90s...my 1st time i fell in love with Kirstie Alley!
WOW Gene Simmons!!!! RIP Kirstie Alley.
I really liked this movie back then. I was into electronics, and had my little commodore 64. I thought the depicts of killer tech were intriguing as well as scary. Especially since I could understand some of the concepts.
They actually had drones in this movie...wow
Just watched this film. One of my new all time favourites.
watching the trailer feels like i saw the whole damn movie !
Starring: Cynthia Rhodes! (Who you haven't seen in the trailer until one line at the end.) NOT starring: Kirstie Alley! (Who got more screentime than Tom Selleck in this trailer)
Damn man, Tom Selleck, Gene Simmons, hot chicks, and killer robots. What more could you ask for?
Hey it’s directed by Michael Crichton who was a filmmaker for Westworld (1973 movie) and he was The author ✍️ of Best story books 📚 novels like Jurassic Park Congo The Lost World The Astronomer Strains and more!!!
I actually saw this in the theater when it came out😆
Nice. I saw it at the Drive-in!
This was kinda accurate, given the amount of research on combat robotics DARPA and the US military have been involved lately...
Nope, Darpa was far more advanced even back in the 80s. What they present to you as cutting edge is their obsolete junk.
Something comforting about this era of movies.
A much more simple and better time in life, 80s rocked!
The most 80s movie ever.
Yes! I had this one on vhs as a kid. Love this movie. Tom Selleck is a beast! 🎥 🍿
Lol. Joey Cramer is the kid you are thinking of. Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) does the voice of the Robot alien in the spaceship. "Compliance!"
I’ve got to watch this. I was born in ‘81 and there were some great films but I don’t recall this one.
Amazing film - - at least when i watched it as a kid bullets that flew around corners, acid spiders, remote controlled car bombs. Great Sci -Fi movie
And doorbell cameras.
This movie is awesome. Gene makes a great bad guy and Selleck makes an awesome cop. Plenty of action and suspense. Grab it on DVD. Runaway is a kick butt sci-fi action thriller.
Is it really that good?
Denisovan, don't risk your money. It's free streaming online.
I saw a bit of this movie when i was a kid and i haven't actually seen it ever since but i remember i had a nightmare about gene simmons and killer robot spiders as a kid :) This doesn't feel so scarry anymore!
Great to see Kirsty Alley in her prime
0:29 Selleck looks badass in that suit.
I remember this movie from a long time ago one of my favorites of Tom Selleck.Old Thomas Magnum P.I.
Vividly I remember this movie like it was to seconds ago I watch this movie, but it was thirty something years ago.
And that's the actor from the Police Academy series G.W Bailey great actor and performer.L.T Harris
One of those 1980s hidden gem action flix....
What’s surprising is the concepts they get right.
Man thinking of the 80s was so far ahead that we never reached the point lol. Now a days our thinking isn't even close to it
This movie was dope. 80s technology was fucking next level..it’s 2020 and we have tik tok and memes..
watched the whole movie the other night and didn't even realize that was gene simmons until watching the trailer today...selleck vs. simmons is an epic battle for all time
Wow when the bullet was flying through the crowd thats when i remembered this movie... 80s had some lowkey classic films
Had forgotten ALL about this movie - thanks for the trailer :D
Kirstie alley was top tier back in the day. Pretty lady.
Tom Selleck staring as Tom Selleck.
I saw this as a kid, and I always thought this was a David Carradine, but it's actually
Gene Simmons
Loved this movie haven't seen it for years 😊
Just learned of this. 'Runaway' is writ & directed by Michael Crichton of 'Jurassic Park', 'Westworld', 'Coma', 'Sphere', 'Disclosure', 'E.R.' and 'Twister'. Shame this movie flubbed under 'The Terminator'.
wow, gene actually looked non-prehistoric there.
The military as of July 2014 had just successfully tested a self guided bullet just like the ones used in this film that is 30 years old. Matter of fact we have all this tech in use now interesting how science fact catches up to science fiction.
I know, I mean take a look at Star Trek in the original series and next generation.
OH MY GOD I THINK I SAW THIS WHEN I WAS A KID!!.... thanks for reminding me pat.
DarthPlaugas yeah i remember this movie lol
This movie scared the shit out of me when I was a kid
@@tebanots15 I really felt for Tom Selleck’s character, being outmatched by that superior technology-the smart bullet.
The best thing I can say about this movie is that it made me appreciate movies like Terminator and Robocop even more.
You are absolutely right.
My brother died on the set of that movie. One of the mechanical spiders went haywire and Tom Selleck just stood there. He just stood there and watched him die!
Łukasz Krupiński clever
I guess we've gotta watch kickpuncher 2, the rekickening.
I just pissed myself reading this
Me too. Exact same thing.
Gene the Warlock goes to Radio Shack and makes life hell for Magnum PI
Need to see this again during lockdown. Haven’t watched this in so long, thought Burt Reynolds was the lead role! Maybe I’ve been watching to much Archer.
I remember being very little and watching this. Awesome flash back
I've never seen or heard of this film, but this trailer is SO AWESOME I MUST NOW WATCH IT.
Tom Selleck, Gene Simmons, Kirstie Alley and the kid from Flight of the Navigator in a movie from the writer of Westworld and Jurassic Park. A movie with robo-spiders. Awesome!
they need to remake this movie
This movie became underated because of the terminator comes out at the same year...
I didn't know the JURASSIC PARK Michael Crichton was the director.
KISS had just taken their makeup off within the last year and it seemed like about half of the people in the theater were still unaware of what he looked like....but they knew that Gene Simmons was in the movie. One the best Gene Simmons films besides Wanted: Dead or Alive which should be released on Blu-Ray!
Movie's are forcasters of things to come. Almost all of the tech seen in this movie is used, good or bad today.
Abed's movie night brought me here. Can't believe I've never heard of this before now
A real Classic-Great Entertainment
This deserves a re-release from Scream Factory.
You're absolutely right!
Damn. I have this through Movies Anywhere, part of a BOGO from Sony Pictures. The other movie was And Justice For All w/ Al Pacino.
see i knew i wasnt the only person that liked this movie its got 3 hundred thousand watching the trailer
This was a great movie!!
No remake.... Noooooooooo. Great movie for its time and shoutl be left alone.
Good but little known flick. Gene Simmons was soooo damn evil, Kirstie Alley was so beautiful and Tom Selleck was so damn HOT! Oh, I also liked Lois the robot. I hope they fixed her.
I remember this when I was a kid.
decent flick
Loved this movie!

It wasn't the first movie he directed...
I can't believe pat wasn't lying.
this movie terrified me as a kid. i'm facing my fear of it now by watching it on netflix HD through my roku box.
I remember watching this movie as a kid. Even tho I liked robots, this one freaked me out 🤣. Especially the spider bots injecting crap into people and killing them, lol.
I'd like to find this movie. I saw it a few times on TV and enjoyed it.

Did you think I was stupid Ramsey? Awesome movie!
Crichton? The *JURASSIC PARK CRICHTON?!*
They should do a remake of this movie. I still remember this movie when I was a kid. It was a classic!
Thanks Matt! this is just like Ghost in the Shell!
Because this is the 80s, all Movies in the 80s had 80s music. Get it?.....80s

Michael Chriton was a genius.
I've been looking for this movie for years! I swear to god, if Family Video doesn't have this, I just might kill some people with mechanical spiders.
I thought of this movie the other day because of the "bullet with your name on it" bit. It seems like drones are becoming more and more like this, where politicians won't be able to go out in public for fear of being dive-bombed.
Eddie Trunk brought me here!
