U r this or that. Dave Smith, among other individuals, is one of those persons who sees through it. Unfortunately not many are.

      so long as conservative ideas continue to fail to materialise beneficial results for society, i do not see myself being conservative.

    • @stephenbradshaw8863
      @stephenbradshaw8863 12 днів тому

      @TheFallinhalo At its core conservatism is (meant to) be about maintaining the status quo - "conserving" it. The current state of society, whatever it may be, will obviously include both positives and negatives, which will both be maintained if the current state is kept. That's why Zuby's question is such a good one - it's basically asking people what they think is the ideal achievable society - the one they would seek to "conserve".
      It's debatable whether many of those who currently call themselves conservatives truly operate in the manner described above, which might confuse Zubys question for some people.

    18:00 I typically agree with Dave on most points, but the idea that "the state's biggest competition is the [...] church" completely ignores Shiism in Islam, which believes that religious leaders are fundamentally totalitarian political leaders, thus the "church" is synonymous with the "state". Case in point: Modern day Iran.
    Or look at pretty much the entire Middle Ages in Europe, where the Papacy was a theocratic state to which nearly all European monarchs swore fealty. And the tyranny that resulted from that is what gave birth to the modern secular liberalism movements (France, for example), not WWII. In fact, the Cold War following WWII lead to a massive resurgence in state-dictated religiosity, as the "evil commies are atheist, and capitalist 'Murica is Christian!" Atheism isn't what makes communism evil... It's conformist collectivism, which is something most major religions also espouse.
    So, sure, a community church/temple/masque is excellent. All for small communities with common beliefs joining together, especially for common peaceful religious purposes. However, just like any other group of people, giving it authority over all people is just another form of statism called a theocracy.

    • @MrGunnar69
      @MrGunnar69 17 днів тому +2

      @@Mortiel I completely agree.
      The Protestant states became somewhat similar to today's Saudi Arabia with a king as commander-in-chief and the state church controlling the population.
      Many of the people from Sweden who moved to the US were deported because they went to the wrong Protestant church. Only after the Second World War could one work for the state without being a member of the state church. Sweden had then been a democratic hellhole for three decades.
      The Church existed in the Soviet Union and the worst German speaker in history, Merkel, was a member of the Christian Democrats in East Germany.
      So to say that totalitarian states oppress or want to get rid of the church/religion is completely historically wrong.
      After all, God told Bush in a dream that the US would invade Iraq, and the believers had no problem sending their children to die and kill civilians in a country they can't find on a map.

    • @troll_kin9456
      @troll_kin9456 17 днів тому +3

      I don't think it's meant to be a universal historical principle. It's just an observation about modernity. Churches were a center of resistance against the Jacobins and the Nazis and the soviets. They have their own set of ideals that often conflict or at least compete with the agenda of the modern secular state, and they create divided loyalty from the state's point of view.
      I agree that there have been plenty of historical episodes where the church acted as a state or worked with the state, but I don't think the European Middle ages works as an example. In fact, I think it's contrary evidence. There was constant friction and power struggles between the monarchs and the Papacy in medieval Europe, and the papacy did indeed act as a constraint on the power and desires of European monarchs. They swore fealty to the pope for the same reason our modern politicians swear fealty to Israel - because it represents an independent power interest that political leaders have to contend with when pursuing their agenda.

      @bigz5262 so, my libertarianism goes something like this: Libertarianism is the closest thing we have to a truly just political system, and the more examples people see of it tangibly working in real life, the more it will spread.

    On the US foreign policy segment, I really have just one statement as an American. I am not an isolationist, there will always be areas where America needs to secure it's interests. My issue with US foreign policy is that our government seems to treat our military as a surgical scalpel. We have some amazing special forces, but for the most part, the US military is a broad sword and should be considered as such. If the US is going to intervene somewhere, I want 100% backing to get the job done. I remember in Iraq when we had the surge to put down the rebellion - it worked, sort of. Almost nobody remembers the surge in Afghanistan, which was with far few troops and for a shorter period. I had a guy I worked with that was in the army and served in both Iraq and Afghanistan - after Iraq he refused to get married or have kids with his girlfriend because he says he was exposed to Agent Orange. He was a K9 IED handler and in Afghanistan he was on patrol with his unit when they were ambushed by Taliban. The Taliban threw out a grenade and men in his unit threw themselves on the grenade to save the rest. My point is, I don't like seeing lives wasted - if we are going to intervene somewhere, then I want decisive action and full backing to give our troops the resources they need to complete the job; if not then find another solution. Period.

      What interests do you feel our military needs to secure? We have no business intervening in other nations affairs. We need to defend our own country and that's it. We have more than an adequate miliary to secure this country and its borders. The US has miliary installations all across the world and we are going broke. All empires have failed by overextending resources due to military interventions. The US needs to set an example of values of freedom and the individual and not socialist values. The military industrial complex drives all of these interventions in the name of doing it for securing our interests, when the truth is for profit.

    • @Nick-bh5bk
      @Nick-bh5bk 12 днів тому

      @@christophergreyson6953 To your initial question, I would say that we need to secure vital minerals that for example, China, is securing for itself and actually excluding of export to countries that is has an issue with - this is a fact that nobody can contend with. I agree with you that we are overextended militarily and that there is a bunch of waste, but there are some sound investments and also some that need to be overturned - I'm no military expert, so don't ask me which is and which are not worth it. I would diverge however in your notation of freedom and socialist values - while I agree with you about freedom and rule of law, the problem is realpolitik. People today forget that during the Cold War we specifically fought over this issue. If you think that America can settle into a Buddhist state and let China or Russia peacefully settle world affairs, I think you are lying to yourself. Lastly, to your comment on the military industrial complex, while I agree to a degree, I would just point out that the pharmaceutical industrial complex is actually about twice the size of the miliarial complex, so if we are concerned about taxpayer dollars and corruption, I would start at the top. Best, my friend.

    Postmodernists miss how it's always been about truthfulness not truth, about refraining from leaping prematurely to conclusions. If in doubt, the measure of the more righteous position is its willingess to subject itself to discussion in the public square. That's why a public square is sacred. We need a religion of preservers of the public square.

    Two of my fellow brothers in all this, thanks for doing you, dudes. (We all must find common ground, but it ain't easy being us. For some reason around nature/nurture, some of us just are sticklers for what actually happened, getting at that. Most are for whatever reasons more prone to PR, more conformist, more just non-questioning, naive.
    And the part of all this worse than all of us more than decent people facing what we do for being these "contrarians," is how many truly non-savory people win out, USE all this BS today to gain, and do so due to the twisted nature socially this all leads to. SO many lame people rewarded by the culture, vultures using wokeness and just being born into it and we can't really blame anyone per se, but it's just sad.
    We have to live this, fight it, be the truth that rises to the top. It is our fate.
    Cheers, all!

    What brings you both optimism is exactly what terrifies and frustrates the establishment and they take it very seriously. ‘The widespread dissemination of misinformation online’ as they see it, is a threat because it weakens trust in gov and its institutions and with the new Cold War raging parallel to this media shift, it means holding onto our new found strength will be a serious struggle. One way for gov’s to address this issue is with greater transparency and honesty, however because of the simultaneously growing geopolitical struggle, governments are more likely to consider it an unsustainable internal threat and double down efforts to control it.
