1:20:05 Is a fair warning to not make assumptions or develop a confirmation bias with patients. We're all human and addiction counselors many times have their own past and can project their own experiences onto the patient if not mindfully careful.

Good pointS. Prefer a 'Recovering Addict' for a Counselor though as 1 atm isn't. Therefore can't really relate much, but too true about 'Projection' etc.👍

Most people, who r addicted to drugs, or alcohol, or both, have to go to rehab. It takes self disipline, a wuiet environment, counseling, choreslots of good food, AA meetings, back to back, before u leave the rehab. If u r on drugs, NA neetings, back to back. When u get out, stay away from people, places, and things, and go to meetings all the time. Get a sponsor!

Or, let's give medical science a chance, try a non religious supportive environment, explore medication and, if possible, find professional help for any underlying issues.

@@pat2562 religion is always the scapegoat for NOT INTERESTED. However, its way more that. Plenty of non religious even atheists are apart of the 12 step program. The higher power idea is about letting go of one's thinking and ways for how they were (,not) managing their lives. Their way stopped working. It's a concept where one surrenders this fact and gives their trust and faith into the fellowship or creator or into anything that is bigger than oneself. Lacking any or all spirituality has been shown to be one of the underlying factors in addiction disorderd individual's. That, along w alienation from healthy peers, family life and unresolved trauma's are significant factors that keep one helpless, hopeless, defeated and depleted. There has GOT TO BE MORE than weekly check in's, drug testing that has no consequences which should at LEAST involve SOMETHING, say , tools for urges, discussing what to do if cravings occur, listening to other's that came and succeeded, b4 them, developing a community of like minded folk where there are accountability initiatives should be no brainers to add to this pilot program that does little to focus on the causes or the teaching of the history or science of addiction. Most addicts have deeply rooted issue's and this program addresses NONE OF THIS

@@jazpurgarcia831 I'm a deeply religious person, but I don't go to church for a "disease". AA is great for the 5% it works for, it's destructive and damaging for rest.

Couldn't agree w you more! Altho I think the new compassion approach and reframing/renaming modules being implemented are long overdue, there's still No Real Recovery implemented in these programs in their infancy and I find this extremely problematic.

From 46:10 on think about what the person in addiction has picked up while growing up or around someone else in addiction. Instead of someone saying it could be hereditary maybe it is the person picking up on the coping mechanism of the person around them who also picked theirs up from their respective guardian. Speaking from experience I was never taught about feelings or emotional interactions or how something made me feel. I was taught NOT to do a lot of things. I know there is personal accountability needed when working on addiction. And I am working on it. But I can't help to think of how much things would have been different if there were different lessons growing up available...... parents do the best they can in the moment and they are usually only doing what they have learned or been taught. Hopefully we can come up with a system to help adolescents learn better coping mechanisms and help them understand their feelings.... sadly most of the time you won't know about issues until it is too late and they end up with addictive behavior.

someone (undiagnosed or self diagnosed) claimed to have a depression diagnosis they diagnosed themselves (doctor google) claimed that their medication or illicit drugs gave/gives them depression when they run out. as they self medicate with drugs, be it illicit or recreational marijuana. so i told them their depression is actually closer to substance/medication induced depressive disorder. they rallied everyone in the group against me. people insulted me harshly before booting me out. they called the legitimacy to my mental diagnosis (schizoaffective disorder depressive type. even though the department of veteran affairs rated me 100% and social security disability rated me disabled. and the multiple in the teens of mental hospitalizations. my information is available online on my google drive.
mentally disabled people are thrown in the crowd with all the people that either fake it, want to be a part of something or do not really know what a disorder actually is.

I grew up in Brooklyn during the 90’s . This guy just explained why my environment was the way it was. Wow. The fastest way to the brain is inhaling it which In turn makes it more addictive. So when people was just snorting it, they had a better chance at recovering than the people in my neighborhood smoking the shit.

I’m pretty much crazy!, ask my Psychiatrist!,
Also my brother and sister and most of my family are dead from one kind of addiction or neglect than another 🤷🏻‍♂️
So I have a great freedom to speak!.
    Talking of capital punishment 😮🫣🫢
    Yes!, I went there 🥺😊
The reason that we stopped hanging people in the UK!, was because the hangman was a good Christian and eventually his job drove him insane!.
    Every time.
Now with computer algorithms we wouldn’t have these issues 🤷🏻‍♂️
So anyone caught bringing class A or anything that spins the web of evil!.
We can get rid of these pour peddling souls 🙌
If you’ve ever spoken about the life of servitude of these people!.
There glad to be put out of there misery 😉
    True say 👍

Addiction is a crutch. Once people addresses the underlying causes/traumas that they use addictions to cope with - learning other healthier coping mechanisms and seek a mental ‘anchor’ to hold onto, such as faith in a higher power, ourselves and finding self value, purpose, meaning and positive human connection, hobbies they enjoy will begin to heal and experience natural highs - especially when feeling loved and need - problem solved. No more need for substances with majority. Addiction is more of a dependence to cope in life, rather than a disorder. Looking at it as the latter - is to miss treating the underlying cause that keeps the person addictive. And when these traumas are not addressed, or replaced with the above - relapse to substances is a certainty that ends tragically. Please treat the underlying pain, fear, loneliness, anxieties and trauma. I become an alcoholic to deal with PTSD and panic disorder which is disabling and no adequate mental health care and support was offer. I gained by strength through God and my now beloved husband. And finding coping strategies- living in the moment only, not looking back. Or I would be dead today. It’s a crutch - nothing more. Because we lack the right anchor to hold onto - faith.
