This reminds of what a Dutch guy, who was fluent in German, said to me.
“Dutch and German are so similar. I have to listen very carefully. Sometimes I get the words confused.”
I was watching this video on a train in Germany and I really died laughing. False friends between closely related languages are always funny but you probably made it even better with your comedy skills.

Thank you for this video. Another false friend is "geschieden" which means "happen" in Dutch and "divorced" in German. The word "er" can also cause confusion ("there" in Dutch and "he" in German)
There are many examples of how one can't always assume, for words that are the same in Dutch and German, that a common gender word in Dutch will be masculine or feminine in German or that a neuter word in Dutch will be neuter in German (het park/der Park, de auto/das Auto)
It is said in Dutch dictionaries that the word "nacht" is masculine, so we have "des nachts" as in 's Nachts ga ik naar huis. In the meantime, the word "Nacht" is feminine in German. When functioning as an adverb, it is masculine as in "des Nachts".
However, the two languages consider "nacht/Nacht" feminine in this situation:
De maan is de koningin der nacht.
Der Mond ist die Königin der Nacht.
BUT

As a Norwegian learner of German (a work in progress for years but I get by, understanding quite a fair bit, mostly from reading the language) this was a fun video about false friends between German and Dutch! Given that the two langauges are related and thus have many similarities, I can understand a bit of Dutch (mostly in written form) but it''s nice to know that some of the words I know in German could potentially lead to awkward misunderstandings for Dutch speaking people. Groeten uit Noorwegen! :)
Hundreds of years ago, Dutch was called "Low Dutch" and German was called "High Dutch" in English. These terms can be found in Jonathan Swift's famous novel "Gulliver's Travels" (1726). At that that time people still considered Dutch and German as one language with two kinds of dialects.
Later appeared two other linguistics terms for the two languages: "Low German" for Netherlandic and North German dialects, "High German" for German and Luxembourgish.
When the VOC (=Vereenigde Oost-indische Compagnie) still had its power in The Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), the Dutch called their native tongue "Nederduytsch" (=Low German). After 1850s, however, this name was becoming out of favour and the term "Nederlandsch" appeared. Right after the World War II the name "Nederlands" (without -ch) appeared.

Flanders (Dutch part of Belgium) was also called the "Low German ( _bas-allemand_ ) part of Belgium" in French similarly. And the Dutch/Flemish were one of the largest groups involved in the German Ostsiedlung - mainly settling in Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Upper Saxony, East Prussia, Silesia, and Transylvania. Danzig's Dutch influence is well known. Dutch Reformed Churches in South Africa are still called "Low German" up to this day ( _Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk_ , _Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk_ ). Netherlanders lost German identity as a result of Napoleon's conquest of the modern Netherlands and Flanders which politically separated most of the Dutch-speaking regions from the rest of the German world. However, Napoleon didn't conquer all of the Dutch-speaking regions. He failed to conquer the Lower Ruhr (land stretching from Emmerich to Dusseldorf) which historically spoke Dutch dialects (Kleverlandish, East Limburgish) and still do to a large extent, but they retain German ethnic identity and call their language _Platt_ instead cause they went through a separate political development.
I found this out the hard way! When I was beginning Dutch and practicing amongst friends, I said "geil" instead of "geel". They all laughed, I asked them what was so funny and they politely informed me. I'm just glad I said it amongst friends and not at work or something

Heel interessant. Wachten is ook een false friend. In Duits soldaten wachten. Wachten op Nederlands heet warten op Duits.

"Drempel"
This was a bit of confusing for me, when I had my first bike travel in the Netherlands neighbourhood (living at dutch border since I was 13). I was always warned on the streets "let op drempels", which means "watch the bumps" or "Achtung Bodenschwellen"
Drempel (Dutch) = Schwelle (German) = Bump (English)
Drempel (German, synonym Kniestock) = Jamb muur (Dutch) = Jamb wall (English), I guess.
Drempel in German is the upper part of a house wall where the roof is connected. So why should I have a look at your houses, while I should better have a look at the ground, when you put those traps there? 🤪

Nog eventjes over het woord "geil" gesproken. Het betekent eigenlijk alleen cool in het jeugdjargon, anders is het eigenlijk hetzelfde als in het Nederlands. Als volwassene altijd "geil" zeggen, zou ik het heel vreemd vinden.

From the point of view of the modern local dialects, the territory within which German and Dutch are spoken is a single speech area. It is possible to travel from Austria, northern Italy, and much of Switzerland into Germany, eastern France (Alsace and part of Lorraine), Luxembourg, northern Belgium, and the Netherlands without encountering a village where the local speech is suddenly different. The only sharp breaks occur when one enters the French-speaking parts of France and Belgium or the Frisian-speaking parts of the Netherlands and Germany.
The most striking dialect differences within this large area are those that divide Dutch-Low German in the lowlands of the north from High German in the highlands of the south.

Based on native dialects, yeah. But Standard High German is making a lot of native dialects extinct. So the native dialects that would form a continuum between Dutch and German are getting wiped out and thus you'd encounter sudden sharp breaks. Like the city of Dusseldorf originally spoke a Low Frankish dialect closest related to Limburgish, but now exclusively speaks Standard High German.

I have now seen a lot of your videos. If you knew how many words you have in Dutch is also written almost in same way-Huis-Hus. You have also many words who makes one think German. When it comes to your grammar-It's very much alike the Swedish. In Sweden we have also short and long words and how they are pronounced. Like kal(Kaal)(long) or Kall(Koud)Short. I speak all three and more language fluently.

Also lecker is false friend. In German it onle means tasty, whereas in Dutch it can be used to refer to something nice.
A huge false friend for me ist "net", in german dialects it has the meaning "not". That nederlands "net" always sounds like a not to us.
Well "geil" had the same sexual meaning in Germany too, about 40 or more years ago. And it can still be used for that.

Im Nord(West) deutschen gibt es noch das "all" für "schon".
Super leuk, maar even over zat zijn. In Groningen en in het Gronings zeg je wel dat je zat bent als je genoeg eten hebt gehad. Ben je dronken? Dan ben je “doenne in de kop”. Zat ooit te eten met mijn aangetrouwde uit het westen komende familie waarbij ik na het eten zei dat ik zat was. Men keek mij aan en zei: “na 1 biertje al? “😭

geil actually also means horny in german, actually when my grandpa was young it used to not mean "cool" at all, only in the last 50-40 years it has taken on the meaning of cool.
but if u were to say to ur gf or bf smt like "Das hat mich richtig geil gemacht" it only functions in the sexual context
its so interesting cuz for a considerable portion of the words there exists a german cognate which u just wouldnt use in that situation or nowadays

Geil und cool haben jeweils mehrere Bedeutungen im Deutschen, da muss man richtig aufpassen und den Kontext zu deuten wissen.
Auch wenn eine Bedeutung ähnlich ist und Überschneidungen hat (im Sinne von toll, gut, schön, großartig bspw.), nutzt man aber die Ausdrücke in verschiedenen Situationen und kann sie dabei nicht wirklich als Synonym (1:1) verwenden. Ein paar Beispiele.
Frage: "Wie gehts Dir?"
Mögliche Antwort: "Mir gehts geil!" (gut bzw. sogar besser als gut = großartig)
Man sagt nicht: "Mir gehts cool!"
Man sagt: "Ich bin cool drauf!" ('drauf sein' = umgangssprachlich 'sich fühlen' -> bedeutet also "Ich fühle mich gut", wahrscheinlich aber lediglich gut, nicht unbedingt großartig)
Wenn man sich großartig fühlt und das mit 'cool' ausdrücken möchte, steigert man diesen Ausdruck: "Ich bin richtig cool drauf!"
Frage: "Magst Du Erdbeeren?"
Mögliche Antwort: "Ich bin geil drauf!" (drauf = umgangssprachliche Verkürzung von 'darauf', man ist hungrig/gierig, versessen oder verlangend welche zu essen)
Frage: "Wie findest Du Tina?"
a) Kontext: allgemein als Person bzw. Freundin/Bekannte
Mögliche Antwort: "Sie ist geil/cool!" (Man findet sie ausgezeichnet, fantastisch, hervorragend, einsame Spitze, klasse / toll, gut, großartig )
b) Kontext: als möglicher Partner
Mögliche Antwort: "Sie ist geil!" (Sie ist begehrlich, lustvoll, sinnlich, heiß)
Frage: "Wie gehts Tina?"
Mögliche Antwort: "Sie ist geil!" (Sie ist geschlechtlich erregt, liebestoll, lüstern scharf, oder spitz oder vulgär fickerig)
Mögliche Antwort: "Sie ist cool!" (Sie bewahrt die Ruhe, hat keine Angst, ist nicht nervös, kühl, lässig, gelassen, ausgeglichen, besonnen, oder auch abgeklärt, abweisend, beherrscht, distanziert) -> so ziemlich das Gegenteil von "Sie ist geil!" wie gerade zuvor beschrieben 😅
Deutsch ist leider nicht einfach, aber es ist eine coole Sprache und geil sich damit zu beschäftigen 🤣

Super Zusammenstellung! Geil ist schon sehr heikel, vor allem in Verbindung mit Personen. "geil auf Erdbeeren" hört sich für mich nach absolutem Slang an, den wohl nur Jugendliche verwenden, oder? (Wenn die Niederländer das hören, lachen die sich bestimmt schlapp!🙂) Meistens wird geil wohl in Ausdrücken wie "Das ist geil" oder "Ich find's geil" verwendet. Das ist dann auch weniger problematisch.
@@DEUTSCH-kurzundknackig Danke fürs Lob. Ja, 'das ist geil' oder 'ich find's geil' würde ich im Erdbeerbeispiel als allgemeine Ausdrücke verstehen, dass man sie generell (sehr) gerne isst.
Ich meinte jedoch sowas wie, wenn man gerade auf dem Wochenmarkt vor einem Stand mit frischen knallroten Erdbeeren steht, einem das Wasser im Munde zusammenläuft und sich vorstellt wie süß und saftig sie wohl sind. In dem Moment bin ich gerade 'geil darauf' sie sofort probieren/essen zu wollen.

Auf Deutsch: "das Meer". Translates to (in English) "the sea", (in Nederlands) "de zee".
In Nederlands: "het meer". Translates to (in English) "the lake", (auf Deutsch) "die See".
Also/auch/ook
Het Duitse woord voor "klimmen" is kletteren/klettern". In het Nederlands is "kletteren" een ander woord voor "vallen". Wat dan grappig word als je er een zin mee maakt. Duitsers "kletteren" in the boom, Nederlanders kletteren vooral uit de boom. (Germans climb into the tree, Dutch people fall out of the tree)

de zee = die See, das Meer

Geil in German has both meanings, one concerning sex and two expressing that something is really nice.

Je spreekt ook Duits? of ten minste bevat je je met de taal. Wat verrukkelijk. Tot nu heb je het Nederlands alleen met het Engels vergeleken, maar nu komt ook het Duits aan de beurt. Dankjewel.
