Buzzing around Buzzards Bay | Ep. 189

- Hadleys Harbor is a wonderful, well sheltered spot. Problem is, there's no place to buy stores. So for that I sail to Padanaram. Now I might just stay on my friend Chris' guest mooring in Padanaram while waiting for weather to jump offshore to the Chesapeake Bay, but Padanaram is not so good in strong southeasterlies, which are forecast ahead of an approaching front. So back to Hadleys. Then back to Padanaram to re-stock ...
NOTE: I plan to depart for Puerto Rico, from Virginia tomorrow, Dec. 1, in which case I will not have internet access for about two weeks.

I guess I’m a little old school, but I just realized that I really love that you keep your production simple and don’t have the all too common “trailer!“. I really like just diving right into your videos straight on! No sales, just sails, I’m sold! But that is obviously old news…. Fair winds and following seas!
Thanks Charlie! Happy holidays to you
I like the passage planning / weather section!
Thanks
Man, that's the best mode I've heard you in, I was expecting a girlfriend to pop out of the cabin.
After years of consuming youtube sailing channels and sailing around NE and even crossing the Atlantic this year to Ireland, Your sailing Channel is the only one I subscribe to and continue to watch consistently. Simplicity, no clutter and noise in your sailing philosophy or video production. Thank you and keep it going! I have purchased Merch in the past to support. Great work Kevin.
Thanks so much. Fair winds mate!
Love Buzzards Bay a truly American Sailors Paradise
'Common babe accelerate !' as boat slides onwards. You are definitely in a relaxed environment. Love your channel.
Thanks for stopping by, Simon.
Kevin’s a celebrity in these waters
What a very nice, relaxing video this was. Ah, sailing can really be Sweeeeet…
Thank You, Fair winds, Much Love and Hugs too.
Thank you for keeping the camera on those beautiful boats passing by you.
🤔
First off, Happy Birthday!…. I just wanted to thank you for showing what these little double enders can do, simply.
Brilliant! Fair warning, Heed well, sail on.
Allí my admiración Kevin. Thanks!! Good winds!! Sorry for my English!!...
Have a good passage. Fair winds!
Thanks Fred. Dealing with pre-passage jitters just now. I'm usually fine once I pick the anchor up ...
@@howtosailoceans1423 Yes, once we get out and going, it’s much more relaxing. If you get down to Beaufort / Moorehead area. I’d be happy to meet you and help with running around if needed.
As typical with you - beautiful boat, simple but EXCELLENT vid & pleasent music. Your channel is absolutely one of my most liked. Tyvvm !❤🎉🎉🎉😂
Ruth Avery sure is a pretty boat when under sail, those drone shots were fun, thank you Kevin. If dents and scratches, getting rear-ended or T-boned, are your thing then Boston should be your destination... Goodbye Buzzards Bay, hello Virginia!
Beautiful footage!
Good luck sailing south. may the force bé with you
Good to see you had fayah sou’westerlies. You outta be out theyah when the afternoon hurricane comes up and it’s blowing 25-30 with 6-7 ft squayah waves. Now that’s exhilarating! Racing in that stuff is even moah exhilarating.
The water sounds during minutes 9:00-11:00 are pleasant and relaxing.
More good sailing stuff once again from Kevin & RA.
Back and Forth between Two Harbors- sounds like a novel in the making to me.
Coming off that one mooring- where you almost drifted into the stern of that other boat- scary moment.
Sailing through that crowded anchorage- sort like finding a parking spot at Walmart during the
Christmas shopping season.
I can hear- that guy's motor. Yeah, kind of a cheater. True Sailors don't use.. motors.
The long jump weather window permitting- Maine to the Cheasapeake Bay and home.
I look forward to that journey for you and RA.
* Since you are underway to PR now, and won't have internet for a bit- Safe journey my friend.
Warm weather destination, clear waters and maybe some rum too!
See you in 2 weeks time.
Thanks mate. Comparing sailing in close quarters to the Walmart parking lot is one I had not considered ...
You had some lovely company out there!
Way ta go Bro. love all your sailorising.
👍👍👍
great video!!
Always brightens my day! Cheers!!
Cracking stuff as usual mate..also lol at least twice.
Tell Chris that Alberg 35 looks great!
Kevin, any chance of a video tour of that boat?
I did a video tour a while back ... ua-cam.com/video/G0LEqpmx3tI/v-deo.html
Have a safe passage to PR…fair winds and following seas..
Good one, thx! Andrew
See you down south, Andrew. How's the Code 0?
@@howtosailoceans1423 waiting on a couple of furling parts, install likely Friday. Looking forward to it! Andrew, yes, hope to catch up south!
Have you ever considered sailing to New Bedford while cruising Buzzards Bay? There's a decent amount of boat traffic but usually pretty straightforward to sail on and off mooring with prevailing southwesterlies.
You have to get through that Hurricane Wall though ...
Hope you had a chance to check out the racers buffet at New Bedford YC. Always a nice spread for cheap on race nights.
Hi Leonard, you said hello to me from the launch in the spring, correct? Anyway, no I haven't checked out the buffet, hmm, have to talk to Chris about that.

If you ever need a sheltered spot I have a mooring in New Bedford you are welcome to use. Tucked up inside the hurricane barrier just behind Palmers Island. If I'm not on it (I'm often cruising) you are welcome to it. Feel free to shoot me a message.
Thanks, I might take you up on that!
So good to hear you talk through some planning with the weather GRIBS. Thanks for doing that. Regarding at anchor, you don't seem to swing around much. Would a small anchor sail at the end of the boom do much good? I guess it might be a function of how much stuff you have up forward. Also, when leaving Hadleys, was that a small buoy attached to an anchor trip line to pull it up backwards in case it catches a snag (around min 12)? Thanks for your reply. Dean
Full keel boats generally ride their anchors nicely, typically not much need for a riding sail. I think the small buoy you are seeing is the pick-up float attached to the hawser loop.
Hi having followed you for some 3 years now I am compiling a vlog on my 10 best UA-camrs which you are one due to your skill sharing, excellent footage and non product promotion. May I use your logo/ a short clip from your video to show others. Regards Roy
Hi Roy, by all means. Fair winds, mate.
Those guys didn't toss u a couple of burgers? lol
Safe passage to PR.
Thanks Paul. Oh those burgers smelled good, I would have been ready to receive ...
Thanks for sharing. Where did you have Thanksgiving?
In Hampton, VA.
Hi Kevin. I love watching your videos and always look forward to each new episode. I do have one question for you. Do you need to have some sort of license, qualification or certification to sail internationally, or in international waters? Or is it a case of if you can get the boat there, you're clearly able to sail it? Cheers from Australia!
No in the US, and not if you are US flagged. I used to have a 100 ton masters license from the US Coast Guard but I let it expire, as it is somewhat expensive to maintain and I never used it.
@@howtosailoceans1423 so you don't need an ICC certificate or anything? Interesting. I saw the RYA says you need their certification, but I'm starting to think that's more about propping up the RYA than an actual legal requirement. Sorry to hear about the damage to your port pin rail, but I love the ingenuity you showed for the fix. Can't wait for the next episode!
Whoops...went back to your video again and now I see that was a mooring you were tied to......so let me just ask, do you ever use a trip line when anchoring?
Rarely, only in situations where the bottom is known to be foul, or there are lots of coral heads. I try to avoid such anchorages.
My Allied 32 is moored inside the harbor at Fairhaven/New Bedford. If you're looking for shelter, you certainly can raft up to one of Ruth's sisters any time you're in the neighborhood. And what is this fuss about 25 knots??? Our boats shine in that stuff. They're like bulldogs that see a Rottweiler when they look in the mirror.
Ha! Thanks, yes, the SC31 is just a Seawind 32 with a canoe stern.
can I ask your average/typical leg length in nautical miles and average/typical boat speed on such legs?
Generally around 4 knots, if you average it all together.
@@howtosailoceans1423 your boat is beautiful and it looks like it sails well on video -- I've got a motor for going in and out and average about 4 kts as well on 15-25 nm legs (on a 10m length, 2.9m wide, 3500kg sailboat) -- mine is quite bulky long keeled type (Semona 30) -- I'm new sailor and quite inexperienced sailing in winter time right now in Sweden wondering if I should have more sail up I'm quite scared of the wind I'm not sure which is why I'm asking -- I've watched your videos for some time I like them, thanks~
@@IrregularPineapples take your time and learn the boat. Know the forecast well and play with different sails. Once the wind gets above 15 knots you will be reefing. Under that and you should be fine with full sail.
Practice putting reefs in and out of your sail, so when the wind come unexpectedly you are not figuring it out. Slow and steady may not win the race, but less chance of breaking things. Have fun :)
@@Steve-ul8qb thanks~ I've become more comfortable with the boat, wind and waves -- recently had a 25nm leg few days ago with reportedly ~0.5-1m waves and ~15 knots of wind -- had full main up and some Genoa -- it was quite rolly as waves came from to the side and behind -- but centre of cockpit was pretty comfortable -- somehow I packed everything nicely too so nothing was in chaos afterwards inside -- I was surprisingly calm considering I would not have dreamed of being in such conditions even just a week ago -- fast leg, too -- I've not setup or prepared any reefing, I should probably do that, thanks~
