Ruth Avery vs. Charis, Race 3 | Ep. 171

- I venture across Buzzards Bay to Padanaram where I have a mooring reserved, courtesy of my friend Chris. After doing laundry and stocking up on groceries, Chris and I have another race across Buzzards Bay to Hadleys Harbor. I remain in the idyllic anchorage for the next several days, relaxing but keeping my eye on the weather maps for a window to continue on to Maine.

Nice job, Kevin. Its fun to watch someone who knows what they're doing...
Thank you
I was not expecting the Toad
He was speaking in the Minion's language. LOL
A race is almost inevitable even if it isn't formalized. I can't resist a race. Spend some time with friends too. Awesome. I'll be curious to see what maintenance will entail.... sanding and varnish for sure. TY MH
+1 . . . Cheers from Chicago good sir!
I like your channel for all the sailorising Mr Ruth. She's a good girl too. I knew it was you singing. Your bass playing has a distinctive sound to it. Good on ya.
Thanks for stopping by, Garrick.
Kevin - I love it when you show on the chart where you are heading and where you anchor/pick up a mooring. I’ve only been to Maine once last year and will again next summer. Tried to find what I thought I heard you say “Hobbs Well” where you will haul as I might do the same end of next summer. When you get there how about showing exactly where & give a plug for the yard you choose.
Thanks,
Skipper Scotty
Harpswell. I haul at the Finestkind Boatyard.
10:04 interesting brake!
all the usual stuff applies, such seamanship in confined spaces, going into and out off anchorages sans motor ( mostly) singlehanded when i would be sweating with a crew, but my favourite moment was seeing Ruth undersail from your friends boat - top stuff as ever
Thanks Richard! Fair winds.
Aloha, I have been following you for a while. Nice job on the singing and playing. I am a musician and the title track to a CD I put out with my son is called Wind in my Sail. Anyway, I started watching because I am on my first sailboat, and it is a gaff sail. I was unfamiliar with them, so had been learning from you. After fixing 13 rotten spots in the hull and deck, I am finally ready to go. I enjoy your productions and your style. Peace
Just left Hadley’s Harbor this morning
love watching someone so in tune with the vessel. welcome back to New England and safe travel to Harpswell!
It was cool to see your boat working from the Charis perspective.
That was great! Two sailboats on the water”a race”… looking forward to observe your maintenance video. Good health to you.
Glad to follow your travels and looking forward to seeing them here. I tracked your sail of Sept 30. Bet that 8.1kt was wild.
For Padanarum!
Kevin, you make maneuvering and hooking up to those mooring balls look easy!
Enjoyed both your racing and singing Kevin - Thank you sir.
Beautiful, thanks for sharing
Another entertaining episode. Thanks.
My new favorite channel. Thank you!
You make it look so easy! Cheers!
Well done great sailing.
Wonderful sailing
Great job in picking up the mooring. You gaged the momentum perfectly. Awesome to get to see Ruth Avery
underway from Charis vantage point. Love your channel. I mentioned you in the video of my first solo last summer.
You and Sam Holmes are my source for solo sailing wisdom and incite. Thank you.
Excellent video! As usual 🙂, what interesting cruising grounds.
Not sure if you're racing or cruising in company with a reef in and the rail above water but utterly enjoying what ever your up to. 👍
another great video! I really liked seeing Ruth Avery from another boats perspective when you were racing. She looked amazing! and of course great seamanship, cheers.
Nice Capture of the mooring
You are an inspiration, not sure that’s spelt wright but you know what I mean…
I could not agree more…Hadley Harbor is one of the most beautiful holes/harbors on the East Coast……..
Very nice harbor
👍👍👍
I don’t know about You, but I had an absolute blast!!
Thank You
Good to have you onboard Paul.
here in the northwest mostly sloop here, had a little Mcgraggor cutty and never understood Ruths rigging Im starting to understand the versatility of the rig. I like your boat.... Ruth was my moms name......
Thank you Kevin , as always a pleasure with your videos.
Angus
Thanks mate! That was a fun sail. Hope to get East later this summer and give RA home field advantage for #4. I'd have had free hands for more video of RA if not for unbalancing the sail plan for speed and making the wind vane balk!
Maine should provide even more baffling conditions than Buzz Bay or the Vineyard, so ya' better bring your A game ...
Masterful boat handling! Serious racers….pulling the dink!
It's part of an elaborate handicap system ...
You are the pro!
Great💯💯
👍
1:30 would having the dinghy on deck have made the difference? Thanks for sharing!
It might have, but not as handy that way once you arrive in port ...
10:45 lol, your camera **DEFINITELY** makes him look like a cheater there, lol. It's the flying Dutchman! Except all hull no sails...
Hey , love your channel, I just bought a Southern Cross 31 in Connecticut and would like to talk if we can touch bases. Your channel is great, love the gaff rig you have set up.
Nice mooring pickup. Nice sailing. Nice race. Nice music, keep singing - you have me smiling.
Thanks mate. I can't stand my own singing, which is why I write instrumentals ...
@@howtosailoceans1423 You're doing it, and showing how. The only shame is when we don't do it. Truth Love Peace, brother.
Kevin, when racing all sails up, you didn't break out the Yankee or the topsail (probably a little windy for a topsail anyway)
You are a great candidate for an electric motor with hydro regen. You wouldn't have to keep it running to be ready on emergency standby like the Tohatsu in tight circumstances and it would also help your solar panels feed your lithium batteries. Oh well. Carry on.
I am barely capable of picking up a mooring buoy solo *with* an engine. In that space I probably would have chickened out and anchored somewhere
Nice video,Kevin. The shot of Ruth from a distance was great. I love the look of the gaff rig. Where are you hauling the boat? Are you spending the winter up there?
Headed to Maine, but will not winter there.
11:37 where's your tops'l Kevin?!
Ruth looks good when viewed from Charis.
gyaff rigi, gyaff rigi!
comment for the algorithm
You need a topsail!
New sub ! Liked 🙏😘
Thank you!
Keith, I’ve enjoyed this harbor a number of times. I wish I had chosen that over Newport last summer when “Ida” came through! Anyway, what is the policy of mooring use in Hadley’s?
Moorings are fair game during the summer so long as there's no really bad weather around, like a hurricane, when the people who manage the boats there will chase you off.
Another her good one Kevin, what was the model and make of that boat you raced against? Alberg 35.?
Correct!
Did I just hear you say "Scandalized Mainsail"
Yes. When the peak halyard is eased on a gaffer the sail is said to be scandalized.
Nice video. I grew up on the Cape, Cotuit and Hyannis, but left asap. Some friends just visited there and said that if it weren't for the fried clams they wouldn't have gone in the first place.
Haven't been on Cape Cod in years. It's very popular with the summer crowd.
I visited about twenty years ago. Everyone I grew up with was either addicted to opiods or dead from overdose.
Hi Kevin, I was wondering how often you renew your rigging. It seems to last a good long time considering how much you sail. Fair winds.
I replaced the lower shrouds last fall with Dynice Dux. Running rigging needs to be replaced more often, will replace the jib halyard this year.
@@howtosailoceans1423 Thanks Kevin, you are so good at replying. You have found some serious string there man. Thanks again, you rock man!
Oh shit...My "Liked #" is 666 , is un liking it for safety sake unlucky. Can't wait to see what you get up to on the refit/maintenance Kevin.
Lol! It comes after 665, kinda like Apollo 13 came after 12 ...
What is that wind vane u have there? Never seen one like that....
It's a Hasler type vane, home built. See my website, under Boat Projects ... www.kevinboothbysailing.com
Maybe it's a better idea to leave the singing to Glen Phillips. Is that a modified Southern Cross 31?
Yes, or a Gilmer 31 really, owner completed.
it look like you had 1 reef in the main and Chis was full is that so.
Yes I had one reef in the main to keep her balanced.
I started with a few rolls on the main and reefed Genoa but went to full genoa when we got out in it. Charis has her old school roller reefing boom so no set reef points.
What type of boats does Chris design?
You would have to ask him. He seems to do a lot of design work on steel ferries, ice breakers, commercial craft.
Didn't that guy realize that you were busy handling your boat, and did not have time for a chat?
Ha! Yeah that happens, some guy wants to chat you up while you're managing a sailboat in close quarters.
Very nice, but you have to admit that dragging a dinghy in a race is more than a bit lubberly! :)
Indeed, but Chris was towing his dinghy too, so we were even on that score.
Truth. But equally so that hoisting the dinghy in and out is a young sailors game!
@@howtosailoceans1423 since this subject has come up a couple of times, I'll ask: is it too inconvenient to tie your dinghy up to your mooring ball while racing or maybe that is considered bad form to "hold" a ball when you aren't actually using it?
Would your jib not helped you to win the race?
It would have, although she would have been driving pretty hard when the wind gusted in, such is a "cruisers race".
Music? Eeeek!
What brand and model is Chris's yacht? Thank you.
Alberg 35.
Proud to say I have an Alberg 35, an oldie but a goodie.
Very seaworthy, and surprisingly fast…
@@edwardfinn4141 Regarding an Alberg 35 built by Pearson and a Alberg 37 built by Whitby Boatworks, which is a better quality build?
@@UUBrahman I do not know
Hey Kevin
Can u send me chris (chairs) contact info. I’m going to be up there next week with my boat and I’ve been looking for a good NA to check out a structural question I have regards my boat. Company name is fine, I’ll google from there. Love the vids, cheers and fair winds.
Hi Mike, send me an email at kaboothby@hotmail.com, I'll forward it to Chris.
