- Helen Joseph Hospital is in the spotlight after patient Tom London released a video claiming doctors mistreat patients. He details the conditions of taps and ceiling boards, for example. Surgeon and breast disease specialist Prof. Carol-Ann Benn says the video highlights what healthcare workers must improve. "It takes small steps in each department to ensure we're respectful and [that] we offer good medical service to someone in need," she says. Benn left the hospital about two years ago.

Professor Benn is a National Treasure in the medical field . I wish her well in her continued work in her Breast Clinic. She is an amazing asset to women in SA
Absolutely no excuse for bad service at any hospitals...
Dr Carol Benn. Amongst the great breast drs I have known or heard about. Pity shes lost to the general medical field. We bless u for whatever u did in that breast clinic at HJH.
I was at jhb gen recently and had to go to dermatology. The matron there immediately recognised I had an anxiety disorder and helped so much I was sooo impressed not only was she organised she was kind to the patients putting me at ease immediately. Some people should be recognised for the incredible job they do under incredible pressure so grateful because it hasn't been my experience in all hospitals. Some sisters are real gems
There are good doctor's nurses, but unfortunately very few
I couldn't agree more with Prof Ben. It starts at the top.
I've had my own experience at Edendale Hospital.
This is true, this is why the country is run down,it started already with evil Mandela,it started when he made 9 provinces and called it job creation, yes it created jobs but at what cost, taxpayers money yes, it opened worse when he brought in affirmative action causing so many people losing their jobs, this caused Eskom to go down because the educated qualified engineers artisans were either fired or offered golden handshake 🤝, and then Mbeki took over and then Zuma, police department are all corrupt, dishonest, it starts on top,the commissioner allow these things to happen,so it flows down 👇👎😢😢
The problem is that there is no consequences for any of the employees at any public facility.
Indeed, exactly the opposite. Protected at all costs.
Shocking, my sister had a similar experience at Lady Frere hospital in East London. After 4 nights she was absolutely traumatized!!
As my late husband said before he deceased that most in the medical profession. Need to go to the Marines for respect boot camp learning. I was once at Professor Benn Clinic at Helen Joseph Hospital i met her she spoke personally with me. Very accomodating
Utterly appalling conditions
ALL MINISTERS SHOULD BE AUDITED AND SENT TO JAIL
True
Who is surprised being with ANC for 30 years. No care at all.
1st warning, 2nd warning. Dismiss.
Thank you for speaking out and your wonderful work and human touch. What a loss to Helen Joseph and people who need help.
Too many chiefs, doctors and nurses are employees of the hospital, just like civil servants ,they serve the state, hospital ceo and managers are to blame for not having control over the staff , this problem is massive , itll take a strong leader to turn this mess around, it s a shameful mess.there are diamonds amongst them but they are scared to speak up, staff are militant and dont take well to order.
In the apartheid days, we had separate hospitals and clinics, but they were clean and well run, with caring staff!
Was served Cold macaroni and cheese at Unitas Centurion last year!
Do not hold out much hope for NHS now
My Mom lay in her waste matter for hours in the surgical ward. Nursing staff lax. She was in high care at Helen Joseph surgical ward.
Ministers and public service persons should be forced to go to state hospitals like the Military staff.
All government hospitals are a place no one wants to end up. Mokopane, Nylestroom etc, all these places nurses are the same.
Since ANC took over, every every everything is bad service and collapse. 😢
Its not only Hellen, but all over SA, one bright lite in this dark maze is Charlotte Makexe, they are also are showing cracks in the plastered walls, but we expect the best treatment, not being rude and unfriendly and unconcerend attitude, those patients pay your salary bud, like it or not. Period.
Something about the training of nurses seems off. Long nails , undignified uniform dress code messy , oily hair.. slow coach service.. Always tired , chewing gum , always hungry, yawning. … How do they expect the public to respect them when the hate their jobs
Awful disgusting unprofessional people
I WONDER why 5he DA has never looked into this????
Would allso like to know!
Why on earth is the “ management” allowed such power? Who on earth are these appalling people? Where are the matrons who ran a tight ship in the past?
How qualified are the Doctors at state hospitals?
Isn't this the same hospital that Jessica Mbangeni died at a week ago? 😕 😢
Would rather die than go to a public hospital
OK, some of us don't have a choice. Luckily I'm at jhb gen heart failure.
Whilst there is room for improvement, Helen J is a death trap
Bara is OK but old and needs staff.
All govt ministers should not be allowed to utilise pvt hospitals and only govt.
You can try by ringing the bell in a private hospital to get attention is also ignored while thy sitting at the station busy drinking tea and toast.
Try waiting for your file, takes 2 hours for them to find it
I am not trying to justify what's happening in public hospitals but as SAfricans lets be realistic...The capacity of Patients vs the Capacity of Nurses nd Doctors, Pple frm other countries comes here day by day..Bt NO new Employees coming in, Nurses nd Doctors are dying, Resigning, in long Sick, some are Retirering.
@@jiwwo1799 hi I hear what you are saying and do agree, but why are we allowing Zimbabweans, Malawian and a whole host of other nationalities into our country when the health system can't even cope with all the ill South Africans?
That 30% kicking in.
All the same they should go for courses on how to treat people
I saw the same conditions - like the state of the bathrooms - at Joburg Gen in 2012 ish. Thought I'd been to Beirut after a bombing...traumatic to see it. Shocking.
Why do those ANC ministers {haha!} not do unannounced random checks at these hospitals? Are they too busy having their lunches, coffee breaks, booze breaks etc etc etc. THIRTY YEARS of this. Disgraceful. What do those overseas honchos think of this situation now?
These learners are clueless, EVEN "AFTER" THEIR DEGREES.
JUST IMAGINE. If this is not cadres through the microscope, then what is ???? Mzanzi cadres at the new low level
This is NOT only an ANC issue....the Western Cape, DA ruled, their state hospitals are just as horrific!
Why do the public hospital system not share a person's results with them? We've just dealt with Frere in East London and it was much the same.
Show me one thing that is well maintained in RSA.This is our new reality
DO AN UNDERCOVER INVESTIGATIVE CAMERA FOOTAGE OF ANY CLINIC IN SOUTH AFRICA.... WAIT FOR HOURS SOMETIMES UP TO 5 OR MORE!!! NO GREETINGS, NO MANNERS BY 'STAFF' /"NURSES"...
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE TEACHING OF AND APPLYING OF THE HIPPOCRATIC OATH!!!
DISGUSTING SITUATION...
The state and who they employ to manage and run the hospitals is at fault the lack of educating those who are involved in terms of service and proper support from management. I truely feel for rhe poor.
I can tell you in hospitals is clean for different people clean
So what do you expect? World class african excellence😂😂😂
With the implementation of NHI all government officials should give up their medical aids and use public health facilities in future if they are so certain it is going to be viable😊
Fire those who are there only for pay cheque and not for the sick who need help.
Banana SA
There is an excuse for these conditions.... Govt department heads stealing funds!!!!
Masa is at newsroom africa now?
The harsh reality of most South African hospitals. Tygerberg Hospital is an academic and training hospital with no sanitation for health care workers . Walls are broken . Patients get no food. At one stage “Gift of the Givers” gave food to patients… Basic care is unheard of. This was a great hospital once upon a time where remarkable surgeries were performed.. It is dark, smelly and home to all kinds of pests and roaches.. It is almost worse than the video clip.. Patients are sick and the most vulnerable but they have to endure the worst care… Everything must change promptly.. Stop stealing funds that is meant for healthcare and the infrastructure of this country …
Please stop your evil deeds and prepare a Health care system to benefit your own generations to come as well.
What do you expect with the anc and their voters😂
Its better there , go to bara
