- Visiting Alberta prairie rattlesnake dens this past September with Snakes on a Plain founder, Sheri Monk. The highlight of the trip was offering water to some thirsty rattlesnakes!

I spent part of my life in western South Dakota in the late 60s and early 70s and the Prarie Rattlesnake was the first Rattlesnake that I ever encountered. I now live in northeast Tennessee near the NC border and spend significant time every year with our Timber Rattlesnakes here in the mountains. As I have a shuttle service for Appalachian Trail hikers, I always encourage hikers to send me photos of the Timber Rattlesnakes as well as other snakes that they encounter while hiking the AT. Less than a week ago I received a photo of a beautiful yellow phase Timber from one of the hikers I shuttled that was basking on the trail. Thanks for sharing.
I love that region and hope to go on a family trip to the Black Hills/Badlands, although the southern Appalachians where you live now is scenic and rich in biodiversity and is an area I have considered retiring someday. Great idea having hikers send you images of snakes they encountered. It is refreshing when "non snake" folks get a jolt of excitement when they come across an impressive rattlesnake. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
YAY A NEW VIDEO FROM MARK!
Thanks for the enthusiasm!
Good Video Mark
Thanks as always!
Excellent work, Mark ! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching Ashley!
I am fascinated by the way snakes have found ways to hydrate when they experience drought. I’ve taken to always carrying water when doing snake relocations. Seems they always appreciate it!
Same here, especially considering that many species of snakes don't always have drinkable water available for weeks/months at a time. Keep up the good work!
Great video! Made me think that I should have offered water to the NorPacs in the den I visited on Saturday.
Thanks! There is always next spring when snakes are particularly thirsty after emergence. My friend and I also offered several dozen red-sided garter snakes water in Manitoba during spring emergence in May, 2018, which was the most memorable experience regarding snakes I have ever had! Footage can be seen in my Narcisse vid.
Thanks Mark for sharing. As you may know I am from the UK and you will be aware of the European adder that lives as far north as the artic circle.
Yes I do! And seeing one at the Arctic Circle tops my bucket list! I even considered mentioning such a desire in this video.
I’ve been looking forward to this one
I hope you enjoyed it!
Don't fall in that hole...
